Optical coherence tomography and gray scale digital analysis as noninvasive techniques for evaluating molar-incisor hypomineralization severity: A comparative study with microcomputed tomography.

Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a qualitative defect of dental enamel characterized by demarcated opacities present in permanent first molars and other teeth. It is considered a major clinical challenge in dentistry because it makes affected teeth more susceptible to fractures and dental caries. Its diagnosis is mainly clinical and there are few technological resources that allow for a more accurate diagnosis, especially with respect to the depth of the defect in the dental enamel. In this context, optical coherence tomography (OCT), which is routinely used in ophthalmology, can prod

Comparative microcomputed tomography and histological analysis of the effects of a horizontal platelet-rich fibrin bone block on maxillary sinus augmentation: A preclinical in vivo study.

BACKGROUND: While suggested to be effective in tissue regeneration, the effects of horizontal platelet-rich fibrin (H-PRF) bone block in sinus augmentation have not been verified in an animal model. METHODS: A total of 12 male New Zealand white rabbits that underwent sinus augmentation were divided into two groups: deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) only and H-PRF bone block. H-PRF was prepared at 700 × g for 8 min using a horizontal centrifuge. The H-PRF bone block was prepared by mixing 0.1 g DBBM with H-PRF fragments and then adding liquid H-PRF. Samples were collected after 4 and 8

Bone-Forming and Antiresorptive Effects of Romosozumab in Postmenopausal Women With Osteoporosis: Bone Histomorphometry and Microcomputed Tomography Analysis After 2 and 12 Months of Treatment.

Sclerostin, a protein produced by osteocytes, inhibits bone formation. Administration of sclerostin antibody results in increased bone formation in multiple animal models. Romosozumab, a humanized sclerostin antibody, has a dual effect on bone, transiently increasing serum biochemical markers of bone formation and decreasing serum markers of bone resorption, leading to increased BMD and reduction in fracture risk in humans. We aimed to evaluate the effects of romosozumab on bone tissue. In a subset of 107 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis in the multicenter, international, randomized, dou

Nondestructive Quantitative Evaluation of Yarns and Fabrics and Determination of Contact Area of Fabrics Using the X-ray Microcomputed Tomography System for Skin-Textile Friction Analysis.

In different mechanical conditions, repetitive friction in combination with pressure, shear, temperature, and moisture leads to skin discomfort and imposes the risks of developing skin injuries such as blisters and pressure ulcers, frequently reported in athletes, military personnel, and in people with compromised skin conditions and/or immobility. Textiles next to skin govern the skin microclimate, have the potential to influence the mechanical contact with skin, and contribute to skin comfort and health. The adhesion-friction theory suggests that contact area is a critical factor to influenc

Embedded microcomputer-based force plate system validation when evaluating lameness severity differentiation under an induced synovitis model in lactating dairy cattle.

Bovine lameness has relatively large negative economic and welfare implications on the U.S. dairy industry. Due to the ramifications, early lameness detection will aid in assisting dairy producers to mitigate downstream effects through early treatment. The objective of this study was to determine the minimum standing time required among 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 10 min time intervals to obtain an accurate weight distribution estimate for each leg when attempting to detect lameness. An embedded microcomputer-based force plate system was developed to measure vertical forces from individual cow limb we

Three-dimensional-line skeleton graph analysis of high-resolution magnetic resonance images: a validation study from 34-microm-resolution microcomputed tomography.

The resolution achievable in vivo by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques is not sufficient to depict precisely individual trabeculae and, thus, does not permit the quantification of the "true" trabecular bone morphology and topology. Nevertheless, the characterization of the "apparent" trabecular bone network derived from high-resolution MR images (MRIs) and their potential to provide information in addition to bone mineral density (BMD) alone has been established in studies of osteoporosis. The aim of this work was to show the ability of the three-dimensional-line skeleton graph analy

A scalable federated learning solution for secondary care using low-cost microcomputing: privacy-preserving development and evaluation of a COVID-19 screening test in UK hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Multicentre training could reduce biases in medical artificial intelligence (AI); however, ethical, legal, and technical considerations can constrain the ability of hospitals to share data. Federated learning enables institutions to participate in algorithm development while retaining custody of their data but uptake in hospitals has been limited, possibly as deployment requires specialist software and technical expertise at each site. We previously developed an artificial intelligence-driven screening test for COVID-19 in emergency departments, known as CURIAL-Lab, which uses vita

Efficacy of using PDGF and xenograft with or without collagen membrane for bone regeneration around immediate implants with induced dehiscence-type defects: a microcomputed tomographic study in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Use of collagen membrane (CM) with xenograft and recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor (rhPDGF) in guided bone regeneration (GBR) is debatable. The aim of this microcomputed tomographic experiment was to assess the efficacy of using PDGF and xenograft (with or without CM) for GBR around immediate implants with dehiscence defects. METHODS: Ten beagle dogs underwent atraumatic bilateral second and fourth premolar extractions from both arches. A standardized dehiscence defect (6 × 3 mm) was created on the buccal bone and immediate implants were placed in distal sockets in

Microcomputed tomographic and histologic analysis of anorganic bone matrix coupled with cell-binding peptide suspended in sodium hyaluronate carrier after sinus augmentation: a clinical study.

PURPOSE: Anorganic bovine hydroxyapatite matrix (ABM), when coupled with synthetic cell-binding peptide (P15), mimics the cell-binding region of type 1 collagen and is commercially available suspended in a sodium hyaluronate carrier. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to test the efficacy of ABM/P-15 Putty (DENTSPLY Friadent CeraMed) as a sole graft material for sinus augmentation in patients with severely resorbed posterior maxillae. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sinus augmentation was performed in 10 patients using ABM/P-15 Putty and two provisional dental implants (3.0 mm in diameter).

The use of a compact protable microcomputer system (EPSON HX 20) to measure on-line the contractile activity of the digestive tract from eight channels. Application to pharmacological tests.

The chronically prepared gut with strain-gauge transducers is a useful model to evaluate the effects of drugs affecting the digestive motility in fed and fasted animals. This paper describes a rapid and reproducible on-line microcomputerized technique to evaluate continuously, 23 hr per day, the level of gut motility using a portable compact microcomputer (EPSON HX 20). The gastric, intestinal, and colonic motility indexes were automatically determined from the surface of the contractile waves from eight different sites over periods of time varying from 1 to 120 min. This system has been succe

In vitro comparison of root canal obturation quality in primary molars using lentulo spiral and reverse rotary techniques with zinc oxide eugenol and endoflas: microcomputed tomography analysis.

BACKGROUND: Primary teeth are necessary for mastication, speech, and guiding the eruption of permanent teeth. Dental caries often requires pulpectomy treatment to preserve these teeth. The success of pulpectomy depends on root canal obturation quality. This study aimed to compare the filling quality of zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) and Endoflas using lentulo and reverse rotary techniques, assessed by micro-computed tomography. METHODS: An in vitro study was conducted on 32 extracted human primary mandibular second molars. Teeth were randomly divided into four groups (n = 8) based on obturation mat

Bone quality in patients with osteoporosis undergoing lumbar fusion surgery: analysis of the MRI-based vertebral bone quality score and the bone microstructure derived from microcomputed tomography.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Osteoporosis is a risk factor for instrumentation failure in spine surgery. Bone strength is commonly assessed by bone mineral density (BMD) as a surrogate marker. However, BMD represents only a portion of bone strength and does not capture the qualitative dimensions of bone. Recently, the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score was introduced as a novel marker of bone quality. However, it is still unclear if the VBQ score correlates with in-vivo bone microstructure. PURPOSE: The aims of the study were (1) to demonstrate differences in MRI
