The fall armyworm strain associated with most rice, millet, and pasture infestations in the Western Hemisphere is rare or absent in Ghana and Togo.

The moth pest fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is now present throughout much of the Eastern Hemisphere where it poses a significant economic threat to a number of crops. Native to the Western Hemisphere, fall armyworm is one of the primary pests of corn in the Americas and periodically causes significant economic damage to sorghum, millet, cotton, rice, and forage grasses. This broad host range is in part the result of two populations historically designated as host strains (C-strain and R-strain) that differ in their host plant preferences. Reports o

Preparation of Sodium Silicon-Modified Maize Stalk Biochar-Based Fertilizer and Its Impacts on Foxtail Millet Growth and Soil Properties.

There exist multiple conflicting challenges in dryland agricultural production: excessive chemical fertilizer input contrasts with low utilization efficiency of maize straw resources, and long-term over-fertilization triggers continuous degradation of farmland soil fertility. To explore the soil improvement and growth-promoting potential of silicon-modified biochar-based fertilizers, this study conducted relevant preparation and pot experiments. This study used maize stover as feedstock to investigate the effects of pyrolysis temperature and silica modification on the structural characteristic

Fermentation Status Dictates Organ-Selective Protection of a Millet-Based Dairy Beverage Against Sub-Chronic Lead Toxicity in Rats.

Sub-chronic lead (Pb) exposure induces multi-organ toxicity through oxidative stress and inflammation. Dietary interventions have shown promise, but their effects are often organ nonspecific. This study investigated whether fermentation of a millet-based beverage could differentially direct its protective efficacy against Pb-induced injury in specific organs.Male Wistar rats were exposed to 1 ppm lead acetate in drinking water for 8 weeks and co-administered either: a fermented mix of skimmed milk and malted millet milk (F-Mix), fermented skimmed milk (FSM), or unfermented malted millet milk (

Stage-Specific Defense Reprogramming in Proso Millet Against Head Smut: Insights from Time-Series Transcriptomic and Metabolomic Integration.

Smut disease is a major constraint on proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) production. Our previous metabolomic work in the cultivar 'Chishu 13' outlined a two-stage defense strategy involving energy metabolism at jointing and phenylpropanoid activation at heading, yet the transcriptional regulation underlying this metabolic shift remained unknown. In this follow-up study, we performed RNA-seq on the same biological samples used in our prior metabolomics analysis to directly link transcriptomic changes to metabolic outcomes. We compared asymptomatic inoculated (IA) and symptomatic inoculated (I

Deciphering salt stress adaptation in octoploid broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum L.): For sustainable agricultural development in saline-alkaline soils.

Saline-alkali soil is one of the major challenges in global agricultural production, significantly affecting crop growth and yield. Polyploid plants often exhibit stronger salt tolerance. However, the specific mechanisms by which polyploid broomcorn millet adapts to salt stress remain unclear. This study used tetraploid and octoploid broomcorn millet as experimental materials to explore their response mechanisms under 120 mM salt stress. The results indicated that octoploid broomcorn millet exhibited stronger antioxidant capacity under salt stress, with lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content in t

Sulfur dioxide derivatives alleviate cadmium toxicity by enhancing antioxidant defence and reducing Cd2+ uptake and translocation in foxtail millet seedlings.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) was recently proposed as a novel bio-regulator in mammals. However, the possible advantageous effects of SO2 in plant adaptation to heavy metal-contaminated environments are largely unknown. In the present study, using Na2SO3/NaHSO3 derivatives as SO2 donors, we investigated the possible roles and regulation mechanisms of SO2 in alleviating Cd2+ toxicity in foxtail millet seedlings. Exogenous SO2 derivatives (0.5 mM) application significantly reduced the seedling growth inhibition caused by Cd2+ stress. Cd2+-induced oxidative damage was also alleviated by SO2 derivatives,

Development and characterization of air-classified plasma-treated foxtail millet starch fractions as an alternative to native starch binder in biodegradable products.

Air classification, a dry fractionation method, is used to obtain starch fractions from foxtail millet. The obtained fractions were exposed to atmospheric cold plasma and used as raw material for biodegradable spoon production, replacing the conventional binder, corn starch. Different physicochemical, structural, rheological, and functional characteristics of starch fractions were assessed. The starch fractions were treated at 20 and 30 kV for 10 and 20 min. Plasma treatment at 30 kV for 20 min increased the apparent amylose content by 17%. It increased water absorption capacity by 15.1%, as s
