People with mobility impairments: Physical activity and quality of participation.

BACKGROUND: we sought to describe the characteristics of physical activity levels, health, community integration, and social participation of people with mobility impairments. METHODS: based on responses to a participation survey, respondents, located primarily in the Midwestern United States, were divided into 3 physical activity groups: high, low, and inactive. We chose a purposeful sample of 604 people with mobility limitations who had a diagnosis of spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, stroke, or poliomyelitis. The Participation Survey/Mobility (PARTS/M) was used to mea

Establishing a mobile coronary care service in a rural setting.

A mobile coronary care unit (MCCU) service was introduced at Sligo General Hospital in 1992. Initially, a medical registrar and CCU staff nurse drove a fully equipped MCCU car to the patient location (Phase 1). When the patient was medically stabilised and had received thrombolysis, if appropriate, the doctor and nurse travelled with him in the conventional ambulance to the hospital. Subsequently, on a pilot basis, the doctor, nurse and equipment were transported by taxi to the patient (Phase 2). Since 1995, the MCCU service has been provided routinely by Sligo General Hospital (Phase 3). Duri

Evaluation of UNICEF/Arab Republic of Egypt/WHO schistosomiasis Control Project in Beheira Governorate.

We evaluated the UNICEF/Government of Egypt/WHO Schistosomiasis Control project in 2 districts of Beheira Governorate of the Nile Delta during 3 weeks in February 1988. The project, begun in 1983, was focused on reducing prevalence, intensity, and morbidity due to schistosomiasis by providing diagnosis and treatment with praziquantel to schoolchildren. Schools were visited twice. Following the completion of the school surveys, the program was extended into the community. Chemotherapy was delivered by mobile and static teams. The evaluation indicated that, with respect to accuracy of diagnosis,

CONTEXT: Among student nurses (SNs), who are key future actors in determining access to palliative care (PC), 30% have avoidant attitudes toward end-of-life (EOL) patients. In 2017, in response to this issue, the French Ministries of Health and Higher Education introduced a mandatory PC placement for health care students as part of a national plan to develop PC. It was in this context that all third-year SNs in our town (population of 20,000) did a 5-day placement in a mobile PC team. OBJECTIVE: To identify whether this placement changed representations of PC among the SNs we hosted, and if s

Reaching Diverse Communities During a Local Public Health COVID-19 Vaccination Response Through a Mobile Clinic Compared to Mass Vaccination Sites.

During the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, local public health agencies were responsible for vaccinating a wide variety of communities. Dakota County Public Health (Dakota County, Minnesota) implemented a program that offered COVID-19 vaccines in a variety of settings, such as county public health buildings, community sites, in-home, mass vaccination clinics, and a mobile clinic unit. The purpose of this analysis is to compare the demographics of vaccinations administered at Dakota County COVID-19 vaccination clinics based on clinic site. More than half (52.5%) of vaccinations administered at mobile

The treatment and prevention of chronic otorrhoea in the Northland health district.

The operation of a mobile ear clinic within the school medical service in Northland is described. The major justification for the use of a sophisticated unit lies in the opportunity which it affords for the education of children and adults on aural health. The higher costs of treatment may well be more than offset by the long-term benefits resulting from increased awareness and better understanding in our population on the causation of supporative otitis media.

One Health Approach to Zoonotic Risks and Healthcare Barriers in Transhumant Pastoralists.

Transhumant pastoralist communities in the Kashmir Himalayas represent a marginalized and understudied population, particularly vulnerable to health risks due to their mobility and isolation. This study examines their healthcare practices, knowledge, and attitudes (KAP), with a focus on zoonotic disease exposure. Data from 384 respondents revealed that only 15% were aware of zoonotic diseases, despite 80% reporting frequent disease outbreaks. Access to health care was limited for 71% of participants, hindered by geographic isolation, poor transportation, and financial constraints. A significan

Climate Change and Musculoskeletal Health: Implications for Rehabilitation Medicine.

The relationship between climate change and human health has become increasingly clear as global temperatures rises. The cardiovascular and pulmonary consequences of extreme weather events have been well researched and documented in the literature. However, the effects of climate change on MSK health are not well understood. This mini- review explores the complex relationship between MSK health and climate change particularly global warming. It highlights the emerging challenges for rehabilitation medicine due to the climate change and suggests adaptive approaches to clinical practice. The mec

Bringing Age-Friendly Care to Rural Communities: The MobileMOC Interprofessional Mobile Health Model.

Rural older adults face disproportionate barriers to health care access, including provider shortages, transportation challenges, chronic disease burden, and fragmented systems of care. The authors describe early implementation of MobileMOC (medical outreach clinic), an interprofessional mobile health care model developed by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to serve rural older adults across nine rural southeast Tennessee counties and Hamilton County, focusing on the 4Ms (What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility). MobileMOC distributes responsibility for the 4Ms across three

Early intensive care unit mobility therapy in the treatment of acute respiratory failure.

OBJECTIVE: Immobilization and subsequent weakness are consequences of critical illness. Despite the theoretical advantages of physical therapy to address this problem, it has not been shown that physical therapy initiated in the intensive care unit offers benefit. DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective cohort study in a university medical intensive care unit that assessed whether a mobility protocol increased the proportion of intensive care unit patients receiving physical therapy vs. usual care. PATIENTS: Medical intensive care unit patients with acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ven

Multisite Mobile Addiction Services: Four-Year Outcomes.

First launched in Boston, MA in January 2018, Community Care in Reach® is a mobile addiction model that uses mobile clinics to deliver harm reduction and clinical services to people at high risk of drug-related morbidity and mortality and who are unhoused or at risk of losing housing. Through a public/private partnership, the model has grown to include six programs across Massachusetts. Using the RE-AIM framework, this initial, descriptive evaluation for this multisite project included quantitative and qualitative methods to give insight into reach and performance. Rapid regional mobile laboratory response and genomic monkeypox virus (MPXV) surveillance in seven East African Community partner states, August 2024: preparedness activities for the ongoing outbreak.

The East African Community (EAC) is experiencing an unprecedented, emerging mpox outbreak since July 2024 in five of eight partner states. We highlight rapid regional response measures, initiated August 2024 coordinated by EAC: field deployment of six mobile laboratories in Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan to high-risk areas, donation of one mobile laboratory to Democratic Republic of the Congo and genomic monkeypox virus (MPXV) surveillance support. These interventions aim to limit local mpox spread and support international containment.

The Effect of Mobile Stroke Unit Care on Functional Outcomes: An Application of the Front-door Formula.

BACKGROUND: The Berlin-based B_PROUD study was designed to assess the effect of mobile stroke unit (MSU) dispatch among ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients without contraindications to reperfusion treatments. However, a large proportion of patients for whom the MSU was dispatched did not ultimately receive MSU care. We estimated the causal effect of additional MSU care on 3-month functional outcomes among B_PROUD patients for whom an MSU was dispatched. METHODS: We used data from the B_PROUD study (1 February 2017-8 May 2019). Given the presence of exposure-outcome un

An Overview of 10 Years of Activity of a Molecular Laboratory for Buruli Ulcer Diagnosis at a Field Hospital in Benin.

Buruli ulcer (BU) is a neglected tropical disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent morbidity. In November 2012, a field laboratory fully equipped for the rapid on-site quantitative PCR (qPCR) diagnosis of M. ulcerans was established at the Buruli ulcer treatment center (CDTLUB) center in Pobè Benin, a region where BU is endemic. We describe its first 10 years of activity and its gradual evolution into an expert laboratory for BU diagnosis. From 2012 to 2022, the laboratory analyzed 3,018 samples from patients attending consultations for suspected BU at th
