Cultivating conscience: Moral neurohabilitation of adolescents and young adults with conduct and/or antisocial personality disorders.

Individuals diagnosed with conduct disorder (CD) in childhood and adolescence are at risk for increasingly maladaptive and dangerous behaviors, which unchecked, can lead to antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) in adulthood. Children with CD, especially those with the callous unemotional subgroup qualifier ("limited prosocial emotions"/DSM-5), present with a more severe pattern of delinquency, aggression, and antisocial behavior, all markings of prodrome ASPD. Given this recognized diagnostic trajectory, with a pathological course playing out tragically at the individual, familial, and societ

Longitudinal effect of self-control on reactive-proactive aggression: Mediating roles of hostile rumination and moral disengagement.

Self-control is a well-known inhibitor of aggression, but the effect of self-control on different kinds of aggression (such as reactive-proactive aggression) and the underlying mediating mechanisms of these effects are unclear. We developed a mediation model to address these issues. A three-wave study was conducted with a sample of 1203 qualifying Chinese undergraduates to test the model. The results showed that self-control at Wave 1 negatively predicted reactive aggression at Wave 3 through mediating effects of hostile rumination and moral disengagement at Wave 2 at the same time, while self

Exploitations and their complications: the necessity of identifying the multiple forms of exploitation in pharmaceutical trials.

Human subject trials of pharmaceuticals in low and middle income countries (LMICs) have been associated with the moral wrong of exploitation on two grounds. First, these trials may include a placebo control arm even when proven treatments for a condition are in use in other (usually wealthier) parts of the world. Second, the trial researchers or sponsors may fail to make a successful treatment developed through the trial available to either the trial participants or the host community following the trial. Many commentators have argued that a single form of exploitation takes place during human

"I want to become someone!" gender, reproduction and the moral career of motherhood for women with sickle cell disorders.

In Sierra Leone, motherhood is being transformed into a moral career for women with sickle cell disorders. This qualitative participatory study, conducted in 2018, involved thirty-six semi-structured interviews with female care-givers and women with sickle cell disorders. Mothers argued that medical models of disease, combined with caring practices, are means to morally manage ideas of 'spoiled identity' and rethink the sick role, disability and life-outcomes of a potentially serious condition. Mothers encourage their children with sickle cell to stay in education as a route to access formal e

What Prevents Quality Midwifery Care? A Systematic Mapping of Barriers in Low and Middle Income Countries from the Provider Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Quality of care is essential for further progress in reducing maternal and newborn deaths. The integration of educated, trained, regulated and licensed midwives into the health system is associated with improved quality of care and sustained decreases in maternal and newborn mortality. To date, research on barriers to quality of care for women and newborns has not given due attention to the care provider's perspective. This paper addresses this gap by presenting the findings of a systematic mapping of the literature of the social, economic and professional barriers preventing midwi

Ethical analysis of a case of treatment refusal: respect for patients' autonomy in the context of the Iranian clinical environment.

Refusal of treatment is a challenging issue in clinical ethics, especially in the context of pregnancy care. However, respect for patient autonomy remains a fundamental ethical principle, as outlined in codes of conduct and patient rights within healthcare services. The aim of this case presentation was to critically analyze a clinical ethics case within the Iranian context using an ethical framework. A theory-based framework was used that integrates the principlism approach, based on prima facie moral norms, with the moral development theories of Lawrence Kohlberg and James Rest to analyze th

[The transformation of the body and its global implications for COVID care: an inside perspective on healthcare].

This paper is the result of an investigation into the role played by the researcher within ethnographic methodology in clinical settings. Accordingly, it focuses on reflecting on the following question: what role does the researcher's voice play in describing bodily transformations in clinical spaces involving people with severe COVID? Drawing on Kleinman's notion of moral worlds, Turner's notion of liminality, Levinas's ethics of otherness, and Butler's theory of power, the study seeks to develop an in-depth interpretation of the moral, socio-ethical and political dimensions involved. "Not all bathrooms are created Equal": Moral experiences of maneuvering in inaccessible infrastructure with physical disability.

How do people with physical disabilities characterize their encounters with inaccessible infrastructure? I draw on interviews and focus groups with older adults with spinal cord injuries from the Midwestern United States to argue that participants experienced inaccessible space as morally harmful, damaging their sense of worth and dignity. They developed strategic bodily "maneuvers" to squeeze through narrow corridors, scale ledges, navigate the back of rooms and buildings, and avoid filth and garbage-resulting in situations of exclusion and marginalized inclusion. Maneuvering established inac

The role of shyness in cyberbullying perpetration: a moderated mediation model of relative deprivation, anger rumination, and Internet morality.

Although the relationship between shyness and aggression has been well established, whether shyness is associated with cyberbullying perpetration and its underlying mechanisms has been unclear. Guided by the General Aggression Model (GAM), this study proposed that shyness, as a personal trait, is related to cyberbullying perpetration through cognitive and emotional processes. Specifically, we developed a moderated mediation model to examine the mediating roles of relative deprivation and anger rumination, as well as the moderating role of Internet morality, in the relationship between shyness

Miscarriage, Abortion, and Disease.

The frequency of death from miscarriage is very high, greater than the number of deaths from induced abortion or major diseases. Berg (2017 , Philosophical Studies 174:1217-26) argues that, given this, those who contend that personhood begins at conception (PAC) are obliged to reorient their resources accordingly-towards stopping miscarriage, in preference to stopping abortion or diseases. This argument depends on there being a basic moral similarity between these deaths. I argue that, for those that hold to PAC, there are good reasons to think that there is no such similarity. There is a mora

The Particularism vs. Bribery Tolerance Scale: Who is Uniquely Vulnerable to Relational Temptations for Bending Rules?

Particularism-bending rules to help one's friends and relations-is a morally ambiguous form of corruption that, unlike bribery, might be justified by virtues of loyalty and care. To test whether they involve distinct moral vulnerabilities, we developed a 16-item Particularism vs. Bribery Tolerance Scale (PBTS) using lay input from Chinese populations, Rasch modeling, and Bayesian structural equation modeling (BSEM). Two pilot studies (N = 91; N = 114) in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland generated topic-matched scenarios of either particularism or bribery. In Study 1 (N = 499), eight pairs of

Algorithmic Moral Burden: Pope Leo XIV, Conscience, and Professional Agency in AI-Supported Philippine Healthcare.

Artificial intelligence influences clinical judgment, risk assessment, documentation, and referral, raising questions about professionals who remain answerable for decisions shaped by systems they cannot evaluate or contest. This study develops the conscientious algorithmic practice framework for AI-supported healthcare in the Philippines through integrative analysis, concept-driven thematic synthesis, and theological and psychological theory integration. Pope Leo XIV's account of technological power, human freedom, responsibility, and the dignity of work is brought into dialogue with the theo

The Relationship of Shopping-Related Decisions with Materialistic Values Endorsement, Compulsive Buying-Shopping Disorder Symptoms and Everyday Moral Decision Making.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive buying-shopping disorder (CBSD) is associated with high materialistic values endorsement and excessive purchasing of consumer goods. A subgroup of individuals with CBSD engage in socially unacceptable behaviors to continue shopping despite negative consequences. This investigation aimed at exploring possible links between ego-oriented shopping-related decisions, materialism, symptoms of CBSD and close-to-everyday moral decision making. METHODS: In study 1, patients with CBSD were interviewed to develop a list of conflict situations, capturing typical shopping-related di

Ethical universality in medicine: A critical rational bioethics beyond cultural relativism.

INTRODUCTION: Cultural diversity in healthcare raises a central question: are ethical obligations in medicine universal or culturally dependent? While modern medicine presupposes moral equality, cultural relativism challenges the universality of ethical standards. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Conceptual and historical analysis of medical ethics. The major ethical codes and dominant frameworks: cultural relativism, common morality, and reflective equilibrium were critically examined to assess how ethical norms develop and how ethical judgments are evaluated. RESULTS: Ethical progress in medicine is

Meaning in life moderates the association between morally injurious experiences and suicide ideation among U.S. combat veterans: Results from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study.

OBJECTIVE: Effectively responding to suicide risk among veterans involves further developing understanding of reactions to combat experiences, including life-threatening events, traumatic losses, and morally injurious experiences. An important determinant of whether stressors lead to poor mental health outcomes is the perception of meaning. The current study aimed to determine whether global meaning (i.e., general beliefs, goals, and sense of purpose in life) moderates the relationship between morally injurious experiences and suicide ideation among combat veterans. METHOD: This analysis exam

Rumination as a Mediator of the Associations Between Moral Injury and Mental Health Problems in Combat-Wounded Veterans.

Moral injury is hypothesized to develop from witnessing or engaging in events that violate one's beliefs about themselves and has been shown to be associated with negative mental health symptoms. Although there has been an increase in research examining moral injury among military veterans, mechanisms that link moral injury to mental health outcomes are not well understood. The present study examined rumination subcomponents (problem-focused thoughts, counterfactual thinking, repetitive thoughts, and anticipatory thoughts) as possible mediators of the associations between moral injury (both se

Trust tangles: Who do kids trust? Unraveling young children's attitudes in the gossip mill.

OBJECTIVE: As an important channel of social-information transmission, gossip enables individuals to acquire reputational information indirectly and to guide partner selection. This study systematically investigates the cognitive development from social evaluation to trust-based decision-making in children. Through two experiments, we examine how young children evaluate different roles in gossip scenarios and how those evaluations influence subsequent trust decisions. METHODS: Study 1 examined how 141 children (aged 5-7) integrated factors such as gossip valence, emotional cues, and informati

Ethical dilemmas in real-world medical settings expose the limitations of bioethics, represented by the "four-principle framework," in dynamic and personalized clinical decision-making.The development of narrative medicine provides more space for showcasing the unique context of life, alleviating the predicament of normative ethics. However, current ethical practices in narrative medicine have not responded to the theoretical problem of the lack of ontology, moral subject, and reflective process in principlism, calling for the further exploration of the moral issues inherent in the narrative process
