[Disorders of motor functions after removal of parasagittal meningiomas].

Specific features of motor activity disorders were studied in 87 patients before and after removal of a parasagittal meningioma. Motor disorders are most severe in localization of the tumor in the region of the middle third of the superior sagittal sinus and falx and less severe when the tumor is found in the posterior parts of the anterior third of the superior sagittal sinus. The disorders are more marked after operation with extensive resection of areas of the superior sagittal sinus involves in the tumor and with occlusion of the formed venous drainage passages. The motor disorders are par

Voice disorders in children with oral motor dysfunction: perceptual evaluation pre and post oral motor therapy.

A few clinical investigations of children's voices have suggested a relation between voice deviation and oral motor and sensory dysfunction. This motivated the present retrospective study of the occurrence of voice disorders in a group of children with oral motor problems. A further aim was to evaluate the effect of an oral motor and articulatory treatment programme upon voice function in this patient group. Subjects were 38 children with oral motor deficits who had received and finished therapy at the clinic. The recordings of a picture naming task, before onset of therapy and at therapy endi

Effect of sildenafil on oesophageal motor function in healthy subjects and patients with oesophageal motor disorders.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sildenafil blocks phosphodiesterase type 5 which degrades nitric oxide (NO) stimulated 3'5'-cyclic monophosphate (cGMP), thereby relaxing smooth muscle cells in various organs. We used sildenafil as a tool to investigate the role of the NO-cGMP pathway in the oesophagus of healthy volunteers and patients with hypercontractile oesophageal motility disorders. METHODS: Six healthy male volunteers participated in a randomised double blind study on two separate days before and one hour after oral intake of either sildenafil 50 mg or placebo. Oesophageal manometry was performed

White matter lesions contribute to motor and non-motor disorders in Parkinson's disease: a critical review.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disease, characterized by movement disorders and non-motor symptoms like cognitive impairment and depression. Degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and Lewy bodies have long been considered as main neuropathological changes. However, recent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have shown that white matter lesions (WMLs) were present in PD patients. WMLs are characterized by loss or impairment of myelin sheath in central nerve fibers, which are closely correlated with motor and cognitive dysfunction in PD. WMLs

[Evacuatory motor disorders of the digestive tract in the early period after operations on the stomach (2. Evacuatory motor disorders of the small intestine)].

The method of telemetry was used for studying the motor function of the small intestine in 8 volunteers, 15 patients with duodenal ulcer before operation and in 43 patients at early terms after truncal vagotomy or resection of the stomach. During the first three days, irrespective of the kind of operation and of the degree of extraorganic denervation of the digestive tract, the motility of the small intestine has autonomic regimen of regulation, the pathognomic structure of the motor cycle and is characterized by sufficiently high contractility at the expense of frequent and regular generation

Decomposing cognitive-motor planning from execution: smartphone motor sequencing provides scalable digital biomarkers of cognitive-motor function across central nervous system disorders.

Dynamic praxis, defined as the ability to plan and execute complex, ordered motor actions, underpins essential activities of daily living and occupational performance. Because motor sequencing depends on distributed frontostriatal and interhemispheric networks, its impairment serves as a sensitive indicator of central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction, yet traditional bedside assessments lack granular subprocess resolution. Here, we digitized Luria's fist-edge-palm paradigm into a self-administered smartphone task within the Neurological Functional Test Suite (NeuFun-TS) and evaluated its clini

Historical and conceptual aspects of motor disorders in the psychoses.

Historical epistemology is a useful method to understand the longitudinal construction of the movement disorders in psychiatry. Four periods can be identified in such a process. The first, extending from Classical times to the work of Griesinger, included disorders such as catalepsy, crocidism, epilepsy and paralysis. The second period, stretching from Griesinger to Kahlbaum, concentrated on the study of melancholia attonita, stupor and catatonia. The third period, covering the time from Kahlbaum to WWI, witnessed important conceptual shifts such as: the transformation of madness into psychose

Obsessive-compulsive disorder: a "sensory-motor" problem?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a clinically heterogeneous condition. Although its pathophysiology is not completely understood, neurophysiologic and neuroimaging data have disclosed functional abnormalities in the networks linking frontal cortex, supplementary motor and premotor areas, striatum, globus pallidus, and thalamus (CSPT circuits). By means of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) it is possible to test inhibitory and excitatory circuits within motor cortex. Previous studies on OCD patients under medication have demonstrated altered cortical inhibitory circuits as tested by

Mirroring of a simple motor behavior in disorders of consciousness.

OBJECTIVE: In patients suffering from Disorders of Consciousness (DOC) electrophysiological recordings at bedside could serve as a complimentary and economical tool to improve diagnosis. We utilized a motor observation and imagination paradigm to gain new insights on preserved cognitive processing in DOC. METHODS: EEG brain oscillations were analyzed in 10 VS/UWS (Vegetative State/Unresponsive Wakefulness Syndrome) patients and 7 MCS (Minimally Conscious State) patients and 21 controls during observation and imagination of a grasping movement and group statistics were conducted. RESULTS: Whi

Motor inhibition in trichotillomania and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

We investigated motor inhibition abilities in trichotillomania (TTM) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), two disorders characterized by repetitive, intentionally performed behaviors. Performance in a GoNogo experiment of 25 TTM and 21 OCD participants was compared to the performance of 26 HC participants. In contrast to OCD and HC participants, TTM participants tended to perform either 'fast and inaccurate' (indicating poor motor inhibition) or 'slow and accurate'. TTM participants with poor motor inhibition reported a significantly earlier age of TTM onset than those TTM participants who

Delineation of the motor disorder of Lesch-Nyhan disease.

Lesch-Nyhan disease (LND) is caused by deficiency of the purine salvage enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT). Affected individuals exhibit over-production of uric acid, along with a characteristic neurobehavioural syndrome that includes mental retardation, recurrent self-injurious behaviour and motor disability. Prior studies involving relatively small numbers of patients have provided different conclusions on the nature of the motor disorder. The current study includes the results of a multi-centre international prospective study of the motor disorder in the largest co

The motor disorder of classic Lesch-Nyhan disease.

Reports describing the neurological features of Lesch-Nyhan disease (LND) vary widely, thereby implying the involvement of different neurological substrates. The movement abnormalities in 20 patients with LND were investigated. Dystonia was the most frequent and severe movement disorder. At rest, hypotonia was more frequent than hypertonia. These findings are compatible with basal ganglia dysfunction in LND.

Motor neuron disease: a primary disorder of corticomotoneurons?

It has been suggested that the primary site of damage in motor neuron disease (MND) is the cortical motor neuron, with secondary degeneration of spinal motor neurons. To test this hypothesis, we sought to determine if loss of corticomotoneurons in MND precedes spinal motor neuron loss. The density of corticomotoneurons was measured in 18 MND and 9 control cases using 10-microns horizontal sections of motor cortex in the hand/arm region. The density of spinal motor neurons was measured in 10-microns transverse sections of the lower cervical spinal cord. Corticomotoneuron and spinal motor neuron
