Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland: a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant salivary gland tumor. Although the parotid gland is the most common site of involvement, other major salivary glands and the minor salivary glands-most commonly of the palate-also can be involved. The management of mucoepidermoid carcinoma depends on the grade of the tumor and the adequacy of resection. We present the case of a 56-year-old female presenting a painless progressive cheek mass over 2 months. Imaging and fine-needle aspiration cytology provided the diagnosis of Mucoepidermoid carcinoma. A superficial parotidectomy was don

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the nasal septum (case report).

We report an extremely rare case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the nasal septum. A patient with a history of right-sided nasal obstruction presented to our clinic. Clinical examination revealed a mass in the right nasal cavity originating from the nasal septum. Biopsy revealed a high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The patient was treated with surgical resection only. Surgery alone might be suitable for small tumors when direct inspection of the surgical site is feasible to detect early recurrence.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus treated by multimodality therapy: a case report.

A case report of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus, aggressively treated by multimodality therapy including surgery, radiotherapy, chemothermotherapy, and systemic chemotherapy is presented. The patient, a 53-year-old man, underwent potentially complete resection for an anterior mediastinal tumor, histologically diagnosed as a mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus with Masaoka stage II disease. However, because of local recurrences in the left chest wall and pleura, re-resection was twice performed 4 years and 5 months, and 5 years and 7 months after the initial surgery, in combination w

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the base of the tongue: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma originates from reserve cells present in ducts of salivary glands and is the most common malignancy of the salivary glands. It is commonly found in the parotid gland, followed by the palatal and buccal mucous membranes. However, mucoepidermoid carcinoma occurrence in other intraoral sites, including the tongue base, is extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old Chinese man presented with a progressively enlarging mass at the base of his left tongue. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an augmented soft tissue

Primary cutaneous mucoepidermoid carcinoma infiltrating the parotid gland.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) of the skin is an extremely rare neoplasm but is common in the major and minor salivary glands accounting of approximately 30% of all malignant tumors arising from these glands. Cutaneous involvement should be carefully assessed to exclude the possibility of metastases from distant sites. We report an 81 year-old man presenting a primary cutaneous mucoepidermoid carcinoma infiltrating his left parotid gland. Excision of the affected skin and a total parotidectomy with supraomohyoid neck dissection (level I-III) was performed followed by radiotherapy. No relapse a

High-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of maxillary sinus.

Malignant tumors of the paranasal sinus are uncommon, constituting less than 1% of all malignancies and 3% of all head and neck cancers. Nonsquamous cancers of the maxillary sinus are even rarer as is evident from the limited data available on the clinical characteristics and outcomes. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma accounts for 13% of all malignancies occurring in maxillary sinus. We report a rare case of high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of maxillary sinus in a 45-year-old female along with review of the literature.

Mucoepidermoid microcarcinoma in the context of parotid gland cyst.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a type of salivary gland cancer that can develop in the context of a parotid gland cyst. This type of tumor is composed of mucous, epidermoid, and intercalated cells, and usually presents as a slow-growing and painless mass. A parotid gland cyst is a condition in which a fluid-filled sac forms in the parotid gland. The tumor can be masked as it develops within the parotid cyst. A 45-year-old female patient presented with a suspect of benign neoplasm of the major salivary gland. She underwent partial right parotidectomy, which upon pathological analysis confirmed the

A rare case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the lacrimal gland.

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CEPA) of the lacrimal gland is a rare malignant tumor that arises from a pre-existing pleomorphic adenoma. Lacrimal gland CEPA with mucoepidermoid histological subtype is exceedingly rare. Diagnosis can be aided by radiographic findings, though the gold standard is histopathological analysis following excisional biopsy. Management options include complete surgical excision with or without adjuvant radiation therapy based on tumor grade and invasiveness. We present a 76-year-old woman with 6 months of diplopia and unilateral proptosis. Her initial exam was rema

Primary mucoepidermoid carcinoma of scalp: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the skin is an exceedingly rare neoplasm, with only a limited number of cases documented in the literature. Typically, mucoepidermoid carcinoma arises in the salivary glands, where it accounts for 30% of all malignant salivary gland tumors and generally presents as a low-grade malignancy with a low probability of metastasis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 49-year-old female patient of African origin who presented to our tertiary center with a longstanding scalp lesion that had been present for approximately 10 years. Initially, the lesion was

Two Head and Neck Carcinomas With Squamous and Mucinous Components and Human Papillomavirus Associations: Maxillary Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma ex Sinonasal Schneiderian Papilloma and Tonsillar Invasive Stratified Mucin Producing Carcinoma (ISMC).

Carcinomas of the head-and-neck region with squamous and glandular/mucinous features constitute a heterogeneous group, with a significant minority of tumors showing an human papillomavirus (HPV) association. The differential diagnosis is usually between mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) and adenosquamous carcinoma. We present here two tumors that exemplify both the challenges of diagnostic classification, as well as the complex relationship to HPV: (a) a low risk HPV positive/p16 negative carcinoma that is most consistent with a relatively typical intermediate grade mucoepidermoid type carcinoma

Bilateral Synchronous Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor of the parotid; however, its synchronous occurrence in both of the parotid glands is extremely rare. Herein, we presented a case of 53-year-old man with bilateral synchronous mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the parotid gland treated with surgery. The patient mainly complained of a painless mass in the left parotid gland. A mass located in the right parotid gland was incidentally detected by imaging. Based on cytopathology, left total parotidectomy was performed while preserving the facial nerve with ipsilateral neck dissection, and 5 week

Oncocytic Tumors in the Salivary Gland: A Tri-Focal Review - Integrated Cytopathological, Pathological, and Molecular Features.

<p>Background: Primary oncocytic salivary gland tumors and oncocytic subtypes of traditionally non-oncocytic salivary gland neoplasms are occasionally encountered in fine needle aspiration specimens, biopsies, and resections. Oncocytes are cells, either non-neoplastic or neoplastic, containing increased numbers of mitochondria resulting in cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and a low N/C ratio. Summary: A broad range of salivary gland tumors can be oncocytic including oncocytoma, Warthin tumor, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, salivary duct carcinoma, and others, especially those tumors where

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the hard palate mimicking a dental abscess: Case report.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a malignant tumor that arises from the salivary glands. The recommended treatment strategy typically involves surgical intervention, sometimes complemented by radiotherapy, depending on the histological grade of the tumor. A case of a 22-year-old female patient without medical history was described. The clinical examination revealed a bluish lesion located on the hard palate. The histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Resection of the lesion was performed and oro-nasal communication was immediately closed by a prost

Endobronchial mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a child with postinfectious bronchiolitis obliterans.

Endobronchial mucoepidermoid tumors are rare neoplasms. Due to nonspecific symptoms, diagnosis can be challenging, but early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for prognosis. We present the case of a boy, with chronic respiratory insufficiency due to bronchiolitis obliterans, that presented worsening exertional dyspnea at 12 years. Spirometry showed unexpected deterioration of respiratory function and a computed tomography scan revealed an obstructive polypoid mass in the intermediate bronchus. Given the severe basal ventilatory compromise and risk associated with surgical treatment, rigid br

Low-Grade Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma Mimicking a Mucocele in the Soft Palate: A Case Report.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common malignant salivary gland tumor, but its occurrence in the soft palate and among pediatric patients is unusual. This case highlights the rarity of this condition in children. A nine-year-old girl with a history of recurrent respiratory infections and allergic rhinitis with nasal obstruction developed a cystic, fluctuating lesion on the right side of her soft palate, initially diagnosed as a mucocele. She underwent septoplasty with complete removal of the lesion, and a low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma was incidentally diagnosed. MECs usually pr
