The Use of Diatomite as a Catalyst Carrier for the Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes.

In this article, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been synthesized on the surface of a diatomite mineral impregnated with transition metal salts using a propane-butane mixture in a chemical vapor deposition reactor at atmospheric pressure. The catalyst concentration and synthesis temperature have been varied in order to understand their effects on the formation of MWCNTs and their morphology. Diatomite was chosen as a catalyst carrier due to its elemental composition. It is mainly composed of amorphous silica, quartz and also contains such metals as Fe, K, Ca, Mn, Cr, Ti, and Zn, whi

Advances and Perspectives in the Use of Carbon Nanotubes in Vaccine Development.

Advances in nanobiotechnology have allowed the utilization of nanotechnology through nanovaccines. Nanovaccines are powerful tools for enhancing the immunogenicity of a specific antigen and exhibit advantages over other adjuvant approaches, with features such as expanded stability, prolonged release, decreased immunotoxicity, and immunogenic selectivity. We introduce recent advances in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to induce either a carrier effect as a nanoplatform or an immunostimulatory effect. Several studies of CNT-based nanovaccines revealed that due to the ability of CNTs to carry immunogenic

Carbon nanotube incorporation in PMMA to prevent microbial adhesion.

Although PMMA-based biomaterials are widely used in clinics, a major hurdle, namely, their poor antimicrobial (i.e., adhesion) properties, remains and can accelerate infections. In this study, carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were incorporated into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to achieve drug-free antimicrobial adhesion properties. After characterizing the mechanical/surface properties, the anti-adhesive effects against 3 different oral microbial species (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans) were determined for roughened and highly polished sur

Carbon Nanotube Based Groundwater Remediation: The Case of Trichloroethylene.

Adsorption of chlorinated organic contaminants (COCs) on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been gaining ground as a remedial platform for groundwater treatment. Applications depend on our mechanistic understanding of COC adsorption on CNTs. This paper lays out the nature of competing interactions at play in hybrid, membrane, and pure CNT based systems and presents results with the perspective of existing gaps in design strategies. First, current remediation approaches to trichloroethylene (TCE), the most ubiquitous of the COCs, is presented along with examination of forces contributing to adsorption

Tin oxide-carbon nanotube composite for NOx sensing.

Tin oxide-single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) nano composites are synthesized for gas sensor application. The fabrication includes deposition of porous SWCNTs on thermally oxidized SiO2 substrates followed by rheotaxial growth of Sn and thermal oxidation at 300, 400, 500, and 600 degrees C in air. The effects of oxidation temperature on morphology, microstructure, and gas sensing properties are investigated for process optimization. The tin monoxide oxidized at 400 degrees C showed the highest response at the operating temperature of 200 degrees C. Under the optimized test condition, the compo

Polyaniline-carbon nanotube composite film for cholesterol biosensor.

Nanocomposite film composed of polyaniline (PANI) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), prepared electrophoretically onto indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass plate, was used for covalent immobilization of cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) via N-ethyl-N'-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) chemistry. Results of linear sweep voltammetric measurements reveal that ChOx/PANI-MWCNT/ITO bioelectrode can detect cholesterol in the range of 1.29 to 12.93 mM with high sensitivity of 6800 nA mM(-1) and a fast response time of 10 s. The degree and kind of agglomeration affect carbon nanotube cytotoxicity.

The urgent need for toxicological studies on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has arisen from the rapidly emerging applications of CNTs well beyond material science and engineering. In order to provide a basis for comparison to existing epidemiological data, we have investigated CNTs at various degrees of agglomeration using an in vitro cytotoxicity study with human MSTO-211H cells. Non-cytotoxic polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate was found to well-disperse CNT. In the present study, the cytotoxic effects of well-dispersed CNT were compared with that of conventionally purified rope-like agglomerated C

Homochiral carbon nanotube van der Waals crystals.

For applications of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in integrated circuits, it is crucial to have high-tube density arrays of SWNTs that are well aligned and purely semiconducting. In this work, we report on the direct growth of close-packed SWNT arrays on hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrates, demonstrating high alignment and uniform chirality within each array. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that a self-assembly growth mechanism resulted from the intertube van der Waals attraction and the ultralow sliding friction of SWNTs on the atomically flat hBN substrate. Field-effect

Carbon nanotube-cellulose ink for rapid solvent identification.

In this work, a conductive ink based on microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was used to produce transducers for rapid liquid identification. The transducers are simple resistive devices that can be easily fabricated by scalable printing techniques. We monitored the electrical response due to the interaction between a given liquid with the carbon nanotube-cellulose film over time. Using principal component analysis of the electrical response, we were able to extract robust data to differentiate between the liquids. We show that the proposed liquid sensor c

Towards nanotube-based sensors for discrimination of drug molecules.

The proper detection of drug molecules is key for applications that have an impact in several fields, ranging from medical treatments to industrial applications. In case of illegal drugs, their correct and fast detection has important implications that affect different parts of society such as security or public health. Here we present a method based on nanoscale sensors made of carbon nanotubes modified with dopants that can detect three types of drug molecules: mephedrone, methamphetamine and heroin. We show that each molecule produces a distinctive feature in the density of states that can

Noncovalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes as a scaffold for tissue engineering.

Tissue engineering is one of the hot topics in recent research that needs special requirements. It depends on the development of scaffolds that allow tissue formation with certain characteristics, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-collagen composite attracted the attention of the researchers with this respect. However, CNTs suffer from low water dispersibility, which hampered their utilization. Therefore, we aim to functionalize CNTs non-covalently with pyrene moiety using an appropriate hydrophilic linker derivatized from polyethylene glycol (PEG) terminated with hydroxyl or carboxyl group to disperse

A Meta-Analysis of Conductive and Strong Carbon Nanotube Materials.

A study of 1304 data points collated over 266 papers statistically evaluates the relationships between carbon nanotube (CNT) material characteristics, including: electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties; ampacity; density; purity; microstructure alignment; molecular dimensions and graphitic perfection; and doping. Compared to conductive polymers and graphitic intercalation compounds, which have exceeded the electrical conductivity of copper, CNT materials are currently one-sixth of copper's conductivity, mechanically on-par with synthetic or carbon fibers, and exceed all the other materi

Titanium Dioxide Nanotube Arrays for Cardiovascular Stent Applications.

Efficient stent implantation among others depends on avoiding the aggregation of platelets in the blood vessels and appropriate proliferation of endothelial cells and controlled proliferation of smooth muscle cells, which reduces the development of pathology, such as neointimal hyperplasia, thrombosis, and restenosis. The current article provides an elegant solution for prevention of platelet and smooth muscle cell adhesion and activation on stent surfaces while obtaining surface conditions to support the growth of human coronary artery endothelial cells. This was achieved by surface nanostruc

Molecular dynamics simulations of theoretical cellulose nanotube models.

Nanotubes are remarkable nanoscale architectures for a wide range of potential applications. In the present paper, we report a molecular dynamics (MD) study of the theoretical cellulose nanotube (CelNT) models to evaluate their dynamic behavior in solution (either chloroform or benzene). Based on the one-quarter chain staggering relationship, we constructed six CelNT models by combining the two chain polarities (parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP)) and three symmetry operations (helical right (HR), helical left (HL), and rotation (R)) to generate a circular arrangement of molecular chains. Preparation and characterization of polycarbonate/multiwalled carbon nanotube nanocomposites.

A polymer nanocomposite was produced by ultrasonic-assisted dispersion of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in a polycarbonate matrix using p-xylene and dichloromethane as the solvents. The filler loading was varied from 1 to 3 wt % in order to examine the effect of MWCNTs on the structure and properties of the composites. The nanocomposites were characterized by DSC, DTA, TGA, UV-vis, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy to evaluate the changes induced by the filler in the polymer matrix. UV-vis, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy measurements confirmed the presence of the dispersed phase in the composit

Myofibroblasts and lung fibrosis induced by carbon nanotube exposure.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are newly developed materials with unique properties and a range of industrial and commercial applications. A rapid expansion in the production of CNT materials may increase the risk of human exposure to CNTs. Studies in rodents have shown that certain forms of CNTs are potent fibrogenic inducers in the lungs to cause interstitial, bronchial, and pleural fibrosis characterized by the excessive deposition of collagen fibers and the scarring of involved tissues. The cellular and molecular basis underlying the fibrotic response to CNT exposure remains poorly understood. My

Are carbon nanotubes a natural solution? Applications in biology and medicine.

Carbon nanotubes and materials based on carbon nanotubes have many perceived applications in the field of biomedicine. Several highly promising examples have been highlighted in the literature, ranging from their use as growth substrates or tissue scaffolds to acting as intracellular transporters for various therapeutic and diagnostic agents. In addition, carbon nanotubes have a strong optical absorption in the near-infrared region (in which tissue is transparent), which enables their use for biological imaging applications and photothermal ablation of tumors. Although these advances are poten

Nanoparticle fractionation using an aligned carbon nanotube array.

A technique utilizing the capillary assisted sieving capability of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to achieve fractionation of nanoparticles of small size distribution is presented. By dipping aligned CNT arrays into a solution comprising different sized quantum dots (QDs), size-selective gradient decoration of QDs onto CNTs is achieved. The fractionating capability of CNTs is also demonstrated for poly-dispersed manganese doped zinc sulfide nanoparticles and QDs of varying sizes and chemical compositions, which we attribute to the size-selective sieving effect of CNTs. By controlling the terminating

Confined growth of armchair MoS2 nanotubes at the 1-nm limit.

Atomically thin nanotubes of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides offer a platform for exploring quantum phenomena at the one-dimensional limit and for realizing nanoscale transistor channels. However, conventional syntheses produce only large-diameter (>10 nm), multiwalled tubes with uncontrolled chiralities. We report the synthesis of single-walled molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanotubes with diameters approaching 1 nm, achieved through spatially confined reactions inside boron nitride (BN) nanotubes. The confined geometry stabilizes otherwise inaccessible, highly strained MoS2 nano

Confinement-modulated phase transition of Fe-Ni melts in carbon nanotubes.

Fe-Ni nanowires exhibit excellent magnetic properties, making them promising candidates for spintronic and high-density storage applications. Under carbon nanotube (CNT) confinement, their structural evolution and phase behavior remain insufficiently understood. Here, we systematically investigate the solidification and structural evolution of Fe-Ni melts confined within CNTs. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that nanoconfinement suppresses crystallization and induces amorphous solidification, leading to the formation of coaxial layered nanowires governed by the evolution of common neighb
