Reversible extraskeletal uptake of bone scanning in primary hyperparathyroidism.

Metastatic calcification within soft tissue, such as the lung and stomach, is associated with hyperparathyroidism, chronic renal failure, hemodialysis, metastatic neoplasm and hypervitaminosis D. Bone scanning agents variably accumulate within these extraskeletal metastatic calcifications. We report a patient with primary hyperparathyroidism whose bone scan revealed abnormal uptake in the liver, lung, stomach and parathyroid gland followed by complete resolution of extraskeletal uptake less than 1 wk after parathyroidectomy.

Gastric MALT Lymphoma with Biclonal Gammopathy and Bone Marrow Involvement Mimicking Multiple Myeloma.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas are B-cell neoplasms that commonly affect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, usually the stomach. In most cases, extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (ENMZL) is an indolent disease. Bone marrow involvement is common with MALT lymphoma accompanied by paraproteinemia; such involvement impels disease progression. Here, we present the case of an 82-year-old Hispanic patient with long-standing ENMZL in whom the gastric site responded to antibiotic treatment and Helicobacter pylori eradication, but the disease progressed over the years, with a biclonal g

Mandibular intraosseous lipoma: clinical features of a condylar location.

Lipomas are common benign neoplasms affecting many adipose tissue-containing organs of the body, including bone. Central lesions in bone account for less than 1% of all lipomas. In the literature, intraosseous lipomas have been reported in various bones such as the frontal and parietal bones, ribs, ulna, phalanges of hand and foot, femoral neck, fibula and calcaneum. No preference has been described for gender or race. As far as the authors know, there have been no documented cases of intraosseous lipoma involving the temporomandibular joint. This report describes a rare case of mandibular int

Ewing family tumors of soft tissue: a case report.

The Ewing family tumors (EFT) of soft tissue represent a spectrum of neoplasms of uncertain histogenesis, arising in soft tissue without bone involvement. They include Extraskeletal Ewing Sarcoma and Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor. These tumors are morphologically indistinguishable from Ewing sarcoma of the skeletal system. Known to be translocation-associated neoplasms, they share a common non-random translocation leading to the fusion of the EWSR1 gene on the 22q12 region, with one of the many members of the ETS family of transcription factors. Occurring mainly in adolescents and young men

Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Version 3.2023, NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a heterogeneous hematologic malignancy characterized by the clonal expansion of myeloid blasts in the peripheral blood, bone marrow, and/or other tissues. It is the most common form of acute leukemia among adults and accounts for the largest number of annual deaths from leukemias in the United States. Like AML, blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a myeloid malignancy. It is a rare malignancy characterized by the aggressive proliferation of precursors of plasmacytoid dendritic cells that frequently involves the bone marrow, skin, central nervo

Benign osteoma with Gardner syndrome: review of the literature and report of a case.

Gardner syndrome, a variant of familial adenomatous polyposis, is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by gastrointestinal polyps that develop in the colon as well as in the stomach and upper intestine (duodenum), multiple osteomas, and skin and soft tissue tumors. Cutaneous findings include epidermoid cysts, desmoid tumors, and other benign tumors. Polyps have a 100% risk of undergoing malignant transformation; consequently, early identification and therapy of the disease are critical. Osteoma is a benign neoplasm of bone tissue that is characterized by slow continuous growth and is th

Sarcoma of follicular dendritic cells with features of sinus lining cells--a new subtype of reticulum cell sarcoma?

Dendritic cell neoplasms of the World Health Organization classification comprise Langerhans cell histiocytosis, Langerhans cell sarcoma, interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma, follicular dendritic cell sarcoma, and dendritic cell sarcoma, not otherwise specified. Several studies based on immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis tried to further clarify the origin of these neoplasms which are thought to derive from mesenchymal or bone marrow precursors. Lymphatic vessel endothelium hyaluronan receptor-1 (LYVE-1) was recently described as a marker for lymphatic endothelium which is exp

Solitary plasmacytoma of the sacrum treated with microwave ablation in conjunction with high dose of dexamethasone: A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell neoplasms are characterized by the neoplastic proliferation of a single clone of plasma cells. Solitary plasmacytomas most often occur in bone, but they can also be found in soft tissues. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 53-year-old male presented with localized sacral pain and urinary incontinence. His radiographic studies showed a solitary sacral plasmacytoma (i.e., involving the bone). He was successfully managed with high-dose dexamethasone and microwave ablation (MWA). CONCLUSION: Plasmacytomas of bone can be occasionally successfully managed with MWA, adjuvant cytoreduction

Temporomandibular joint, skull base and mandibular ramus functional reconstruction with homologous bank tissue and free flap: a case report with 30 months follow-up.

Big craniofacial resections for highly invasive malignant neoplasm, including skull base and maxillary bones, always represent a difficult chance for the reconstructive surgeon. In these cases it is not easy to restore anatomy and function simultaneously even adopting complex microsurgical techniques. In maxillofacial and oral surgery, simple bone homotransplantation for small bone segments reconstruction has been developing as popular technique and tissue banks offer not only bone segments but also many different tissues including complex body parts. In this paper we present, a case report of

Desmoplastic fibroma of the distal tibia: A case report of a minimally invasive histological diagnosis.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign, rare fibroblastic intraosseous neoplasm histologically resembling a desmoid soft tissue tumor. Although classified as benign, DF frequently exhibits an aggressive behavior, has a moderate-to-high recurrence rate, and often causes pathological fractures and extensive bone destruction. This case report presents an incidentally detected DF of the tibia, which was diagnosed using a minimally invasive approach. A 36-year-old African female patient was referred to the Department of Diagnostic Imaging of Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova-IRCCS (Reggio Emilia, Italy)

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors. Survey of 8 cases from a single Mexican medical institution.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a morphologically heterogeneous soft tissue and bone neoplasm, producing a paraneoplastic syndrome due to phosphate wasting. These tumors produce fibroblast growth factor 23, which is implicated in renal tubule phosphate loss. Medical records of patients seen from 1999 to 2013 with osteomalacia associated or not with a tumor were reviewed. Clinical and laboratory data, radiographic studies, and follow-up of 8 patients were tabulated. Histologic features and the immunoprofile of the tumors were analyzed. There were 208 patients with osteomalacia, but only

[Computed tomography in orthopedic radiology].

CT offers specific advantages in the evaluation of complex spine trauma and pelvic injuries, particularly to evaluate fractures of the acetabulum. Spinal stenosis and lumbar disc herniation are conclusively demonstrated by CT and lumbar myelography thus becomes superfluous. Femoral and tibial torsion may be estimated with high accuracy by CT. CT is of definite value in the evaluation of bone neoplasms, and chronic inflammatory diseases of the spine and pelvic bones, especially for the determination of the tumor extent and soft-tissue pathology.

[Potential of temporal bone CT in the study of external acoustic meatus in health and pathology].

Computed tomography (CT) was used to examine 50 patients (100 temporal bones) aged from 10 days to 60 years with healthy external acoustic meatus (EAM) and 53 patients (62 temporal bones) aged from 4 to 75 years with symptoms of acquired stenosis, atresia or obturation of the external acoustic meatus. Polyposition CT of the temporal bone including axial and coronary projections is the most informative method of visualization of the EAM bone part. In axial projection the assessment covers the anterior and posterior walls of the EAM, in the coronary one - the upper and the lower walls. In the pr

Chondroblastoma-like chondroma of soft tissue: report of the first case in the base of skull.

Chondroblastoma-like chondroma (CLC) of soft tissue is a rare benign neoplasm that usually involves the soft tissues of the hand. This report describes the first case of CLC of soft tissue arising in the base of the skull. A 33-year-old man was seen with a slow growing mass in the right parotid region of his face. The noncontrast computed tomographic scans showed an 8.5-cm mass with calcifications involving the right masticator space and extending through the bone into the middle cranial fossa. The radiologic differential diagnosis included osteosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and gia

Infusion-embolization.

Transcatheter intra-arterial therapy for the cancer patient encompasses infusion of chemotherapy and embolization. Intra-arterial infusion of chemotherapeutic agents has been resurrected because of the availability of new drugs, combinations of drugs, and the capability of percutaneous selective catheter placement. Intra-arterial infusion has been effective in patients with carcinomas of the liver, bladder, prostate, uterus, ovary, and lung and in bone and soft tissue sarcomas, melanomas, and tumors of the brain. Embolization of the arterial supply, creating ischemia of the neoplasm, has been

Extraskeletal cutaneous chondroblastic osteosarcoma: a case report.

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is an uncommon neoplasm that usually arises in the deep soft tissues, especially in the lower extremities, with rare cases involving the subcutis or dermis. We report a 60-year-old man with an enlarging cutaneous mass in the right lower thigh. An incisional skin biopsy showed a well-defined, but non-encapsulated neoplasm, characterized by extensive cartilage with marked cellularity, atypia and high mitotic activity, involving the dermis and subcutis. Although osteoid or bone was not observed, a diagnosis of cutaneous chondroblastic osteosarcoma was suggested after ex

Untreated plasmacytoma of bone containing macroscopic intralesional fat and mimicking intraosseous lipoma: A case report and review of the literature.

Solitary plasmacytoma is a rare form of plasma cell neoplasm defined by local neoplastic accumulation of monoclonal plasma cells in the absence of systemic proliferative plasma cell disease. In this case report, a 65-year-old female with remote past medical history of papillary thyroid cancer presented with shoulder pain and radiographs showing an aggressive osteolytic lesion presumed to represent an osseous metastasis. The subsequent MRI and CT examinations demonstrated diffuse intralesional macroscopic fat without a nonlipogenic soft tissue component or focal, nodular mass-like enhancement.

An unusual case of giant cell tumor of soft parts in an American Warmblood horse.

Fine needle aspiration and tissue biopsy samples were taken from a subcutaneous mass in the cranial stifle region of a 10-yr-old horse. Key cytologic features included numerous mildly to moderately pleomorphic histiocytic cells admixed with mononuclear inflammatory cells, occasional fibroblasts, multinucleated cells, and hemosiderin-laden macrophages. Based on these features, cytologic differentials included granulomatous inflammation with reactive fibroplasia, histiocytic sarcoma, giant cell tumor of soft parts (GCTSPs), and giant cell tumor of bone. The tissue biopsy supported a diagnosis of
