Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive neoplasm arising from mesothelial cells, typically presenting with pleural thickening, pleural effusions, or respiratory symptoms. Dysphagia as a presenting symptom is extremely uncommon, and esophageal involvement is rare. We report a 71-year-old male with an 18-month history of progressive dysphagia and significant weight loss. Initial gastroscopy was unremarkable, but repeat endoscopy revealed a smooth lower esophageal stricture. Contrast-enhanced CT demonstrated a well-circumscribed esophageal mass with minimal pleural thickening, and PET-CT confirme

Adenomatoid tumor (AT) is an uncommon benign neoplasm of mesothelial origin, usually occurring in the female and male genital tracts. Extragenital localization such as the adrenal gland is extremely rare. Until now, only 39 cases of adrenal AT have been reported in the English literature. Here we report two novel cases of adrenal AT that occurred in male patients aged 30 and 31 years. The tumors were discovered incidentally by computed tomography (CT). Macroscopically, the tumors were unilateral and solid, and the greatest dimension of the tumors was 3.5 and 8.0 cm, respectively. Histologicall

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a neoplasm characterized by a very poor prognosis and medico-legal implications. Diagnosis, prognosis and therapy are often challenging and include several issues. Cytological diagnosis is frequently the first step of the diagnostic process, and although its sensitivity may be somewhat lower, diagnostic criteria should be taken into account. When effusion cytology is inconclusive for the diagnosis, tissue biopsies should be taken. Even if the morphologic criteria for deciding whether a mesothelial proliferation is a benign or a malignant process have been defi

A case of adenomatoid tumor presenting as a mass in the anterior mediastinum is described. The patient was a 56-year-old woman with left side chest wall pain who showed a mediastinal mass on chest x-ray and CT scans. Thorough clinical and radiographic examination did not reveal any evidence of tumor elsewhere. At surgery, the tumor was found adjacent to the anterior pericardial reflection. Grossly, the tumor measured 5.5 x 5.5 x 3 cm and showed a homogeneous cut surface with numerous cystic structures that varied from 0.5 to 1.5 cm in greatest diameter. Histologic examination showed numerous c

Benign mesothelial tumors are rarer than malignant mesotheliomas and are often found in the peritoneum as incidental findings in women. They include the adenomatoid tumor (AT), the well-differentiated mesothelial tumor (WDPMT), the mesothelioma in situ (MIS), and the solid papillary mesothelial tumor (SPMT). ATs are always benign and predominantly manifest in the genital tract. WDPMTs can develop multifocally and are prone to recurrence, particularly in the case of incomplete resection. Only MISs are considered a confirmed precursor lesion of malignant mesothelioma according to the currently v

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a highly aggressive neoplasm arising from the mesothelial cells lining the parietal pleura and it exhibits poor prognosis. Although there has been significant progress in MPM treatment, development of more efficient therapeutic approaches is needed. BMAL1 is a core component of the circadian clock machinery and its constitutive overexpression in MPM has been reported. Here, we demonstrate that BMAL1 may serve as a molecular target for MPM. The majority of MPM cell lines and a subset of MPM clinical specimens expressed higher levels of BMAL1 compared to a

A 9-y-old, castrated male, domestic medium-hair cat diagnosed previously with chronic kidney disease developed anorexia and vomiting. Ultrasonography revealed abdominal effusion and a left renal perihilar mass. Cytologic evaluation of the peritoneal fluid and mass identified atypical epithelioid cells suspected to be of renal epithelial or possible mesothelial origin. Immunohistochemical (IHC) evaluation of a formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded peritoneal fluid cell block indicated both pancytokeratin and vimentin expression in the atypical epithelioid cell population. With scanning electron mic

BACKGROUND: Adenomatoid tumors (ATs) of the Fallopian tube are rare benign neoplasms, accounting for approximately 0.5-1% of all ATs of the female genital tract. They are often asymptomatic and discovered incidentally. Due to their mesothelial origin, histopathological (HP) diagnosis may be uncertain, requiring immunohistochemical (IHC) tests for definitive confirmation.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of an incidentally discovered tubal AT following a total hysterectomy with prophylactic salpingectomy in a 42-year-old patient with known uterine leiomyomatosis. IHC tests showed positive

UNLABELLED: The solitary fibrous tumour of the visceral pleura is a rare neoplasm that derives from mesenchymal cells adjacent to the mesothelial tissue of pleura. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice in benign lesions and healing resulting in half of malignant. Local recurrence can occur in malignant cases, but it is very rare in solitary benign tumors. It may be a result of an incomplete or conservative surgery, lack of identification of a tumor during the operation or a growth of a synchronous neoplasm independent from that removed. Surgical resection is also burdened with some dif

Serous ovarian neoplasms can overlap morphologically with peritoneal mesothelial proliferations, including well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma (WDPM) and malignant epithelioid mesothelioma (MM). Accurate histologic classification of these neoplasms is important for clinical management. The Pax-8 protein is commonly used for differentiating peritoneal MM from serous carcinoma, but the diagnostic value of Pax-8 for distinguishing WDPM from borderline or low-grade serous tumors is unknown. We used immunohistochemistry staining to assess Pax-8 expression in 33 WDPMs, 34 peritoneal MMs, 48 p

Tubulin is the major constituent protein of microtubules. In mammals, there are seven beta-tubulins and six alpha-tubulins. Each beta-tubulin isotype has a unique tissue distribution. The purpose of this study was to describe the distribution of tubulin beta II in normal and neoplastic human tissues with immunohistochemical techniques. We obtained normal tissues from 33 cases (8 fetuses, 17 neonates, 3 children and 5 adults) and 121 samples of neoplastic tissue from surgical specimens or at autopsy. Immunohistochemical staining for tubulin beta II was performed using a monoclonal antibody, KNY

INTRODUCTION: Mesothelioma arises from mesothelial cells. This tumor is very rare among pediatric abdominal neoplasms. We herein report an extremely rare case of acute abdomen with cystic mesothelioma of the peritoneum in a child.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old boy was referred to our hospital for emergency surgery. Surgery revealed a primary tumor arising from the greater omentum. The tumor was macroscopically diagnosed as a benign omental lymphangioma and was resected en bloc with the greater omentum. A histopathological examination of the tumor revealed a simple columnar epithelium-like

Emperipolesis is a physiologic or pathologic phenomenon characterized by the presence of intact viable cells within the cytoplasm of another cell. It has been described in normal tissues and in a variety of inflammatory and neoplastic lesions such as Rosai-Dorfman disease, tumors, hematopoietic disorders and rarely lymphomas. Emperipolesis by mesothelial cells is rare. Few cases of mesothelial emperipolesis of neoplastic lymphocytes in pleural effusions involved by lymphomas have been reported in the literature. Its etiopathogenesis and significance are controversial and speculative. We report

BACKGROUND: Well-differentiated papillary mesothelial tumor (WDPMT) is a rare neoplasm characterized by low malignant potential. Due to the absence of distinct clinical symptoms, WDPMT is frequently detected incidentally during surgical procedures.
CASE DESCRIPTION: This report describes a patient diagnosed with primary gastric cancer (GC) and concomitant WDPMT. The lesion was identified during laparoscopic radical gastrectomy and subsequently confirmed via histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis. No recurrence or disease progression was observed during a two-year postoperative fol

Primary pericardial mesothelioma is a highly aggressive and rare neoplasm that arises from the pericardial mesothelial cell and has a poor prognosis. The diagnosis is usually established by histological and immunohistochemical studies. Malignant mesothelioma most frequently occurs from the pleura (90%), less frequently from the peritoneum and pericardium (6%-10%), and very rarely from the tunica vaginalis in the testis. Most of the patients were retrospectively diagnosed after surgery or an autopsy due to the absence of specific clinical manifestations. We present a case study of a 65-year-old

A 21-year-old American Saddlebred mare died with a history of weight loss and breathing difficulties of 1 month duration. Post-mortem examination revealed a copious pleural effusion with multifocal to coalescing numerous white to grey nodular masses on the serosal surface of the pericardium, lungs and thoracic cavity. In addition, the left thyroid gland was markedly enlarged. A thoracic mesothelioma and C-cell adenoma with amyloid deposits of the left thyroid gland were diagnosed by histopathology and confirmed by immunohistochemistry employing antibodies against cytokeratin (CK), vimentin and

Recent studies have implicated important roles for endolysosomal ion channels in cancer biology. We used UK Biobank data to characterise the relationships between genetic variants in two genes coding for endolysosomal ion channels-i.e. TPCN2 and P2RX4-and cancer in terms of the definition of tumour types, susceptibility, and prognosis. We investigated these relationships at both global and local levels with regard to specific types of cancer, including malignant neoplasms of the brain, breast, bronchus, lung, colon, lymphoid and haematopoietic systems, skin, ovary, prostate, rectum, thyroid gl

Primary tumors of the epididymis are rare. Adenomatoid tumors are benign, usually found within the wall of fallopian tubes or beneath the uterine serosa. They are most frequently diagnosed as benign tumors of the epididymis and represent 30% of paratesticular tumors. The origin of this tumor is mesothelial cells. Leiomyoma are less common in the paratesticular localization. The origin of this tumor is smooth muscle cells. Clinically, these tumors are indistinctive with a painless mass of the scrotum. Here, we reported a case of combined leiomyoadenomatoid tumor. The histogenesis of this lesion

BACKGROUND: Adenomatoid tumor is a rare benign neoplasm of mesothelial origin, most commonly arising in the epididymis, vas deferens, and tunica vaginalis; primary occurrence in the testis is extremely rare. Cryptorchidism is recognized as a risk factor for testicular germ cell tumors, but its association with adenomatoid tumors remains hypothetical, as there is limited mechanistic evidence directly linking cryptorchidism to mesothelial tumorigenesis in the testis. Moreover, multiple primary malignancies may be related to impaired immune surveillance or genetic susceptibility, though these mec
