The understanding of the eating disorders (EDs) anorexia (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) has undergone remarkable advancements in the past decade. Most studies that have been done in AN show brain gray and white matter volume loss during the ill state that, at least in part, remit with recovery. Similar patterns occur for brain phospholipids assessed using magnet resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Imaging studies have been used to provide functional information regarding serotonin neuroreceptor dynamics, regional cerebral blood flow, or cerebral glucose metabolism. Such studies have implicated cingul

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Manifestation of nervous system involvement by neurobrucellosis, a treatable infection, is not well documented. We investigated patterns of nervous system involvement and determined if neuroimaging abnormalities correlated with clinical manifestations of neurobrucellosis.
METHODS: We reviewed 23 MR imaging studies (17 of brain, six of spine) and seven CT scans of brain in 23 patients (14 male and nine female patients; age range 17-71 years) with positive Brucella titers in their serum and CSF.
RESULTS: Twelve patients had central nervous system (CNS) involvement, four

Griscelli's disease is a rare autosomal recessive immunodeficiency syndrome. We report a 7-1/2-month-old white girl who presented with this syndrome, but initially without neurological abnormalities. Initial CT of the brain was normal. Despite haematological remission with chemotherapy, she developed neurological symptoms, progressing to coma. At this time, CT showed areas of coarse calcification in the globi pallidi, left parietal white matter and left brachium pontis. Hypodense areas were present in the genu and posterior limb of the internal capsule on the right side, as well as posterior a

Patients commonly present to family physicians with low back pain. Because the majority of patients fully or partially recover within six weeks, imaging studies are generally not recommended in the first month of acute low back pain. Exceptions include patients with suspected cauda equina syndrome, infection, tumor, fracture, or progressive neurologic deficit. Patients who do not improve within one month should obtain magnetic resonance imaging if a herniated disc is suspected. Computed tomographic scanning is useful in demonstrating osseous structures and their relations to the neural canal,

Childhood autism is now widely viewed as being of developmental neurobiological origin. Yet, localised structural and functional brain correlates of autism have to be established. Structural brain-imaging studies performed in autistic patients have reported abnormalities such as increased total brain volume and cerebellar abnormalities. However, none of these abnormalities fully account for the full range of autistic symptoms. Functional brain imaging, such as positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and functional MRI (fMRI) have added a new persp

OBJECTIVE: To review recent neuroimaging studies of antisocial behaviour, including criminality, psychopathy, sexual offending, aggression, and violence.
METHOD: Using OVID software, Psycinfo and Medline were searched for studies undertaken in the last 15 years. A brief outline of each technology is followed by a survey of published reports from refereed journals. Where indicated, critical appraisal is offered.
RESULTS: Converging evidence from multiple studies of structure and function indicates that abnormal prefrontal (and probably subcortical) circuitry are very likely involved in antiso

We presented the clinicopathological features of 8 cases of intraventricular neurocytoma, which was a rare, benign tumor of neuronal origin and affected young patients. In each case the intraventricular tumor existed near the foramen of Monro and/or body of the lateral ventricle, and was associated with ventricular dilatation. A CT scan demonstrated a well-circumscribed iso- or hyperdense mass with some calcification, intratumoral cysts of various sizes and a heterogeneous enhancement. MRI, which was performed in 4 cases, confirmed a mass of isointense or slightly hyperintense on T 1-weighted

Neuroimaging studies of major depression have identified neurophysiologic abnormalities in multiple areas of the orbital and medial prefrontal cortex, the amygdala, and related parts of the striatum and thalamus. Some of these abnormalities appear mood state-dependent and are located in regions where cerebral blood flow increases during normal and other pathologic emotional states. These neurophysiologic differences between depressives and control subjects may thus implicate areas where physiologic activity changes to mediate or respond to the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive manifestation

Rasmussen's syndrome is a progressive childhood disease of unknown cause characterized by severe epilepsy, hemiparesis, mental deterioration, inflammation of one cerebral hemisphere, and brain atrophy. Computed tomography, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and magnetic resonance (MR) neuroimaging findings of 8 patients with pathologically confirmed Rasmussen's syndrome were evaluated retrospectively. All patients showed a predominance of the atrophy in the temporoinsular region and cerebral hemispheric alterations on MR images in a similar extension as seen on SPECT studies.

This article covers techniques of imaging, posterior fossa tumors, and supratentorial tumors. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are commonly used in the diagnosis and evaluation of pediatric brain tumors. MR imaging is the primary imaging technique because it is more sensitive in the detection of small tumors, particularly those in the posterior fossa.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) in children is considered different from that in adults. As such, characterizing the structural lesions present in pediatric patients with TLE and their association with long-term seizure control is important. Here, we aimed to assess the concordance between preoperative imaging and postoperative histopathological diagnoses and their associations with seizure outcomes in pediatric patients with TLE undergoing temporal lobe surgery. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of pediatric patients with TLE who underwent surgical treatment between 1988 and 2020 as a part

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global public health problem and is a leading cause of disability, morbidity and death in children and adults in USA It is characterised by alteration of neurological, behavioral and cognitive function as consequence of biomechanical insulte and possible progression to chronic encephalopathy. According to the CDC, approximately 75% of all reported TBIs are considered mild in form. Mild TBI is defined as individuals who had head trauma with subsequent mild deficit on the GCS and thu are frequently observed in military combat, athletes and motor vehicle accident

Fatigability refers to the inability of the neuromuscular system to generate enough force to produce movements to meet task challenges. Fatigability has a central and a peripheral component linked via the neuromuscular system, but how these two components interact as fatigue develops lacks a complete understanding. The effects of fatigability are experienced in healthy humans but also accompany various disorders, often exacerbating their symptoms. We studied how fatigability develops in the neuromuscular system using multimodal neuroimaging. We recruited healthy participants to perform a fatig

Idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects multiple systems in the body and is characterized by a variety of motor and non-motor (e.g., psychiatric, autonomic) symptoms. As the fastest growing neurological disorder expected to affect over 12 million people globally by 2040 (Dorsey, Bloem JAMA Neurol 75(1):9-10. https://doi.org/10.1001/jamaneurol.2017.3299 . PMID: 29131880, 2018), PD poses an enormous individual and public health burden. Currently, there are no therapies that can slow down the disease progression in PD, and existing therapies are limited to

Distinguishing tumours from other conditions is a primary challenge in paediatric neuro-radiology. This paper aims to describe mimics, which are non-neoplastic conditions that have features similar to a neoplastic process caused by a non-neoplastic entity, and chameleons, which are uncommon presentations of brain tumours that are mistaken for other diagnoses. By doing so, we aim to raise awareness of these conditions and prevent inappropriate investigations or treatment in children. When suspecting a brain tumour, a detailed history, physical examination, and appropriate laboratory investigati

Histiocytoses are rare multi-system disorders marked by abnormal histiocyte cell proliferation, affecting children with diverse clinical presentations. Classified into five groups in 2016, including Langerhans-related (L), cutaneous (C), malignant (M), Rosai-Dorfman disease (R) and haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (H), newer entities such as ALK-positive histiocytosis have also emerged, heralding the era of molecular (sub)classification. Common entities include Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD), Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) and haemophagocytic lymphohistiocyt
