BACKGROUND: Lyme disease is an emerging infectious disease in Canada that requires a comprehensive approach to prevention and control. It is a serious illness caused by a bacterium transmitted by certain types of ticks. The risk of Lyme disease currently exists in southern parts of British Columbia and Manitoba, southern and eastern Ontario, southern Quebec and New Brunswick, and in some locations in Nova Scotia.

Echinococcus spp. tapeworms can cause serious diseases in mammals, including humans. Within the E. granulosus species complex, metacestodes produce unilocular cysts that are responsible for cystic echinococcosis in animal intermediate hosts. Methylmercury can impair the reproduction of fish-eating wildlife. We measured lake pH, mercury (Hg) concentrations in small fish, blood Hg levels in adult male, female and juvenile common loons, and loon productivity from 120 lakes in Wisconsin, USA and New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada (Maritimes). Mean lake pH was higher in Wisconsin than in the Maritimes. Body masses of adult loons and Hg concentrations in the blood of loons and in small fish were greater in the Maritimes. Hg levels in fish increased with lake acidity. Abundance of small fish increased in acidic lakes in the Maritimes.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks in the lateral recess of the sphenoid sinus (LRSS) are typically spontaneous in nature and require surgical repair. Endoscopic endonasal approaches have become the mainstay of CSF leak repair in the LRSS, though they remain technically challenging and place the vidian nerve (VN) and sphenopalatine artery (SPA) at risk.
