Nocturia is a common condition in the elderly that profoundly influences general health and quality of life. It appears to predict a higher risk of death. One consequence of nocturia is sleep deterioration, with increased daytime sleepiness and loss of energy and activity. Accidents, e.g. falls, are increased both at night and during the day in elderly persons with nocturia. Nocturia is caused by nocturnal polyuria, reduced voided volumes, or a combination of the two. Nocturnal polyuria can be caused by numerous diseases, e.g. diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus, congestive heart failure, an

Nocturia, generally accepted as an inevitable consequence of aging, is also a symptom of a potentially lethal condition--obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The descriptive study reported in this article examined nocturia and sleep-related breathing problems in persons with postpolio syndrome (PPS) and tested the Sleep Disordered Breathing--Nocturia Model. This model describes the cascade of events that results in polyuria in persons with sleep-related breathing disorders. Data were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. A 34-item questionnaire was published in the newsletter of a na

BACKGROUND: Nocturia is associated with falls, reduced quality of life (QOL), and sleep disturbances, yet remains underdiagnosed and undertreated. Its multifactorial etiology includes reduced bladder capacity, nocturnal polyuria (NP), and comorbid conditions like hypertension. While antihypertensive therapies have been linked to nocturia, the impact of newer agents remains unclear. This study investigated whether sacubitril/valsartan (Sac/Val), a novel angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor used for refractory hypertension, could improve nocturia. Sac/Val's unique natriuretic and diuretic e

The following is a report of the proceedings of the Nocturia Think Tank sessions of the annual International Consultation on Incontinence-Research Society, which took place June 13-15, 2011 in Bristol, UK. The report is organized into sections pertaining to the main topics of discussions having occurred at that meeting, centering on the relationship of nocturnal polyuria (NP) and nocturia but also synthesizing more current evidence advancing our knowledge of the diagnosis and management of nocturia. This article is not meant to be a comprehensive review on the subject of nocturia, a number of

OBJECTIVE: To determine the differences and associations between nocturnal voiding (NV)/nocturia and sleep disorders.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Using an epidemiological survey, we compared residents with non-bothersome NV (NNV) and bothersome NV (BNV) to those with sleep disorders, including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), restless leg syndrome (RLS), and periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), for patient background, lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), sleep status, and general health-related quality of life (HRQL). Furthermore, we investigated associations between BNV and s

BACKGROUND: Nocturia is a common symptom among adults and is often associated with disrupted sleep and diminished quality of life. In many cases, it is driven by nocturnal polyuria, an imbalance in nighttime urine production. Emerging evidence suggests that circadian rhythm disturbances, which regulate hormone secretion, renal function, and blood pressure, may play a role in this altered diuresis. This systematic review evaluated the contribution of circadian dysregulation to the pathophysiology of two distinct nocturnal voiding patterns: nocturia (defined by voiding frequency) and nocturnal p

PURPOSE: Nocturia is commonly reported in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Based on the underlying mechanism, involving atrial natriuretic peptide release from the cardiac atria in response to exaggerated intrathoracic pressure swings, we hypothesised that nocturia may serve as a clinical marker identifying individuals with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.
METHODS: We analysed data from the Sydney Sleep Biobank for participants aged 30-74 years, with diagnosed OSA (AHI >5), with adequate data to calculate an office-based Framingham Risk Score (FRS) Nocturia was indicated on the Pit

PURPOSE: To examine daytime voiding patterns in patients with nocturnal polyuria (NP) and identify a novel predictive indicator based on voiding frequency ratios.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 875 patients with nocturia from 17 Japanese institutions (January 2018-December 2022) was conducted. Patients were divided into two groups based on the nocturnal polyuria index (NPi) > 33% (NP) or ≤ 33% (non-NP). Daytime and nighttime voiding frequencies and volumes were collected from bladder diaries. The correlation between the NPi and voiding parameters was assessed using Spearman's rank corre

OBJECTIVES: Nocturia is considered a clinical problem when nocturnal urinary frequency is two or more times. For affected patients, development of depression, falling, and increased mortality rate are matters of concern. The present study investigated the efficacy and safety of lemborexant for insomnia patients with nocturia.
METHODS: Insomnia patients (Athens Insomnia Scale [AIS] ≥ 6) who typically awoke twice or more during the night to urinate and were examined at our institutions from June 2021 to December 2022 were enrolled. Each was administrated 5 mg of lemborexant, one tablet, daily f

BACKGROUND/AIM: Effect predictors of desmopressin for nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria are understudied. Herein, we investigated the effects of desmopressin on sleep and patient quality of life. We defined cases in which administration of desmopressin led to hours of undisturbed sleep (HUS) ≥3 hours as "marked response cases" and examined predictive factors of desmopressin treatment response.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our study included 129 patients who were administered desmopressin 50 μg for nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria at our hospital. Efficacy and safety of desmopres

PURPOSE: The pathophysiology of nocturia and nocturnal polyuria (NP), conditions that become more prevalent with aging, may in part be explained by changes in hormones involved in water homeostasis. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of aging on urinary natriuretic peptides in nocturia and NP.
METHODS: Patients aged ≥18 years completed 24-hour bladder diaries for assessment of nocturia and NP. They were divided into subgroups of ≥65 years old and <65 years old. Urine samples were collected and analyzed for natriuretic peptide (NT-proANP, NT-proBNP, and NT-proCNP) levels. Pept

Nocturia significantly impairs quality of life, especially in the elderly population, and urinary retention is a main target of treatment for urologists. In addition to nocturia, cardiovascular diseases are common in the elderly population, and a systematic review showed that hypertension and heart failure are often associated with nocturia. One possible pathogenic mechanism underlying the development of hypertension is an increase in blood pressure due to excessive salt intake in people with high-salt sensitivity. From Guyton's natriuretic curve, we can infer that salt-sensitive hypertensive

AIMS: To assess the efficacy of traditional first-line non-antidiuretic pharmacotherapy for nocturia in the real-world outpatient urology setting.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed voiding diaries from adult men treated for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) at an outpatient urology clinic to identify pairs of voiding diaries with ≥1 nocturnal void at baseline and a corresponding follow-up diary completed within 1 year. We compared the odds of nocturia improvement (decrease of ≥1 nocturnal void) in patients started on LUTS pharmacotherapy versus behavioral modification alone.
RESULTS: Tw

An Unusual Reason for Nocturia Combined with Cognitive Decline and Gait Disturbance Abstract. We present the case of a woman with frequency, nocturia, and painful bladder without urinary incontinence. Further examination showed cognitive decline and gait disturbance. A magnetic resonance imaging of the neurocranium showed normal pressure hydrocephalus. After lumbar puncture with cerebrospinal fluid evacuation the symptoms improved. The clinical triad of gait disturbance, cognitive decline and urinary symptoms like frequency with or without incontinence is typical for normal pressure hydrocepha

BACKGROUND: Nocturia results from a mismatch between bladder capacity and nocturnal urine production (NUP), which is determined with a frequency volume charts (FVC).
AIM: This is the first study that aimed to describe variations in nocturia severity and its associated factors by evaluating FVCs per single 24 h-period.
METHODS: This was a post-hoc analysis of patients who completed a 72 h-FVC in prospective, observational studies. The nocturnal polyuria index (NPi ) was defined as the ratio of nocturnal and 24 h urine output. Subgroups were defined according to variations in nocturia frequenc

The prevalence of overactive bladder (OAB) increases with age. Degeneration of the central nervous system in the elderly has been proposed as one of the pathogenic factors of OAB. Antimuscarinic therapy is effective in the treatment of OAB; however, intolerable systemic adverse events and cognitive dysfunction during treatment with nonselective antimuscarinic agents is of growing concern in elderly patients. The newly developed beta-3 adrenoceptor agonist mirabegron does not adversely affect flow rate and detrusor pressure, and its therapeutic efficacy and tolerability are similar in patients

AIMS: Nocturia is a common symptom of many conditions and is encountered in patients presenting to services across different medical specialities and health disciplines. The causal pathway of nocturia is multi-factorial and differs between patients. There is currently no symptom-specific clinical algorithm for all-cause diagnosis of nocturia. The aim of this study was to investigate the interrelationships between causes of nocturia in order to inform the development of a comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment metric.
METHODS: A PubMed search that identified studies reporting relationships

BACKGROUND: Nocturia is one of the commonest nonmotor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) and has a significant impact on quality of life both for patients and their carers. There exists a relation between nocturia and poor sleep quality, falls, and institutionalization. Nocturia may manifest as a result of reduced functional bladder capacity or nocturnal polyuria; however, most often the cause is multifactorial. Disorders of circadian rhythm regulation are known to occur with sleep disturbances in PD may also contribute to nocturia.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In this review, an overview of the as

Nocturia is a risk factor for morbidity and mortality but is frequently overlooked and underreported by patients and unrecognized by physicians. Epidemiologic studies reported that nocturnal voiding is associated not only with aging and benign prostatic hyperplasia, but also with many other clinical conditions. The majority of epidemiologic studies reported a significant relationship between nocturia and hypertension. However, the cause-and-effect relationship between them has not been established. Some physiopathological changes in hypertension are conducive to result in nocturia. These inclu

UNLABELLED: Study Type--Symptom prevalence (cohort) Level of Evidence 2b. What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Sleep apnoea syndrome (SAS) can be a risk factor for nocturia, although whether the relationship between nocturia and SAS changes according to age remains to be addressed. SAS has a modest impact on nocturia frequency and the prevalence of pathological nocturia in young adults and middle-aged men. However, SAS may not be a risk factor for nocturia in the elderly, and age-related urinary diseases and voiding dysfunctions could over-ride the influence of SAS on noct
