OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of sharp teeth hook plate by cutting for the treatment of olecranon fractures by comparison with Kirschner wire tension belt and locking plate.
METHODS: Between January 2011 and April 2015, 32 cases of olecranon fractures were treated. Fracture was fixed with sharp teeth hook plate by cutting in 12 cases (trial group) and with Kirschner wire tension belt or locking plate in 20 cases (control group). There was no significant difference in gender, age, side and type of fracture, and time from injury to operation between 2 groups (P>0.05). The healing

HYPOTHESIS/BACKGROUND: Olecranon fractures have variable size of the proximal fragment, patterns of fragmentation, and subluxation of the ulnohumeral joint that might be better understood and categorized on the basis of quantitative 3-dimensional computed tomography analysis. Mayo type I fractures are undisplaced, Mayo type II are displaced and stable, and Mayo type III are displaced and unstable. The last is categorized into anterior and posterior dislocations. The purpose of this study was to further clarify fracture morphology between Mayo type I, II, and III fractures.
METHODS: Three-dime

BACKGROUND: Operative treatment of a displaced, transverse, noncomminuted fracture of the olecranon is associated with good to excellent elbow function in retrospective short-term followup studies. However, to our knowledge, no studies have evaluated objective and subjective outcomes using standardized outcome instruments (ie, DASH and Mayo Elbow Performance Index [MEPI]) to quantify long-term outcome of these specific fractures.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We evaluated (1) factors associated with disability, as measured with the DASH questionnaire; (2) factors associated with ulnohumeral motion; (3)

We retrospectively evaluated the clinical and radiological outcomes of a consecutive cohort of patients aged > 70 years with a displaced fracture of the olecranon, which was treated non-operatively with early mobilisation. We identified 28 such patients (27 women) with a mean age of 82 years (71 to 91). The elbow was initially immobilised in an above elbow cast in 90° of flexion of the elbow for a mean of five days. The cast was then replaced by a sling. Active mobilisation was encouraged as tolerated. No formal rehabilitation was undertaken. At a mean follow-up of 16 months (12 to 26), the me

HYPOTHESIS: Using radiologic and clinical results, we studied the outcome of patients who underwent open reduction and plate osteosynthesis for comminuted olecranon fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied 18 patients (5 women [27.8%] and 13 men [72.2%]; mean age, 41 years [range, 19-67 years]) with comminuted fractures of the olecranon who underwent locking-plate osteosynthesis after open reduction between March 2005 and August 2009. According to the Mayo classification, 11 cases were classified as type IIB (61.11%) and 7 cases were classified as type IIIB (38.88%). In 7

Currently described sources of bone graft, such as iliac crest and distal radius, for supplemental fixation of scaphoid fractures are suboptimal. In our experience, olecranon bone has the advantage of providing a convenient source of corticocancellous block graft that can be harvested within the same sterile operative field used for fixation of the scaphoid fracture, and it also causes less postoperative pain compared to that obtained from iliac crest. Here, we describe our surgical technique for harvest and use of olecranon bone graft for fixation of scaphoid fractures.

Enthesophytes are analogous to osteophytes of osteoarthritis. Enthesopathy is the pathologic change of the enthesis, the insertion site of tendons, ligaments, and joint capsules on the bone. In gout, the crystals of monosodium urate monohydrate may provoke an inflammatory reaction that eventually may lead to ossification at those sites (enthesophytes). Here we report the case of a man with chronic gout who sustained an open fracture of an olecranon enthesophyte when he fell on his left elbow. To our knowledge, no other case of open fracture of an enthesophyte has been reported in the English l

INTRODUCTION: The gold standard for treating transverse olecranon fractures is tension band fixation. A problem with this technique is migration of the K-wires leading to premature hardware removal. The aim of this study is to compare stability provided by two new techniques designed to eliminate the problem with backing out of K-wires, with that of the recommended tension band technique, performed with a biomechanical in vitro investigation. Our hypothesis was that the two new techniques would provide at least equal stability as the traditional tension band fixation.

The incidence of olecranon fractures in adults and the long-term outcome of closed olecranon fractures in 45 women and 28 men (mean age, 54 and 36 years at the time of fracture, respectively), were examined at a mean of 19 years after the fracture. The uninjured elbows served as controls. Thirteen percent of the original fractures were displaced less than 2 mm, 65% more than 2 mm, and 22% were multifragmental. Primary treatment consisted of mobilization in 4%, application of a plaster cast in 12%, and open reduction and internal fixation in 84% of the elbows. The incidence of an isolated fract

Displaced transverse fractures of the olecranon commonly are treated by open reduction and internal fixation using the AO tension band wiring technique. Reports that the AO technique has a tendency to open the fracture site at the articular surface prompted Rowland and Burkhart to modify placement of the tension band. The present study tested the hypothesis that the modified wire placement provides static compression anteriorly, and hence better reduction at the articular surface of the fracture, than the AO technique under static conditions. Transverse olecranon fractures were created on 8 pa

One of the weaknesses of the tension band wiring technique for the treatment of olecranon fractures is that it may open up the fracture at the articular surface of the ulna. A simple modification of the technique eliminates this problem by converting the distracting forces at the articular surface of the joint to compressive forces.

Twenty-nine fractures of the olecranon process of the ulna in horses treated at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine from 1973 through 1983 were evaluated. The objectives of the study were to determine the prognosis for various configurations of fractures of the olecranon process of the ulna, to determine what preoperative factors influenced the prognosis, and to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment methods used. The fractures were placed in one of 4 categories on the basis of severity of the injury: type-1 fractures involved the physeal plate; type-2 fractures involved t

INTRODUCTION: The debate regarding the description on classification and nomenclature of the injury which includes olecranon fracture associated with radial neck fractures in children is ongoing. We report two pediatric cases that could not be classified in a Monteggia-equivalents system and were treated with open reduction and k-wire fixation. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review regarding pediatric radial neck fractures associated with olecranon fractures and presentation of two pediatric cases of olecranon fractures associated with radial neck fractures with radiocapitel

An ipsilateral proximal humerus fracture, "flexion" supracondylar humerus fracture, and olecranon fracture found together is a rare event. The supracondylar fracture should be reduced and percutaneously pinned before the ipsilateral upper extremity fractures are reduced. Displaced supracondylar fractures should be pinned with crossed smooth pins. Most pediatric proximal humerus and olecranon fractures can be treated closed.

Six fracture dislocations or dislocations of the olecranon associated with radial head fractures were treated with open reduction and internal fixation of the radial head. The olecranon was reduced and if fractured (three cases) was internally fixed. Postoperatively, early active range of motion was achieved in all cases. Twelve to 48 months after surgery, there was an average loss of 18 degrees of elbow extension and 56 degrees of forearm rotation. An average of 132 degrees of flexion was maintained. There was no elbow instability or wrist pain.

INTRODUCTION: Tension band wiring (TBW) used for olecranon fractures is afflicted with a high rate of complications. The aim of this study was to compare the stability of the TBW versus an alternative, novel low-profile olecranon tension plate (OTP) with angular stable screws in a simulated complex fracture model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine fresh-frozen pairs of cadaver proximal ulnae with an oblique osteotomy and an additional wedge fragment simulating an unstable fracture were tested. The TBW and OTP were implanted pairwise. The elbow motion was simulated in a single-muscle model and range

PURPOSE: To report the outcome of a novel fixation technique using three high-strength sutures which is including articular buttress suture, cerclage suture, and tension band with off-loading triceps suture (triple suture fixation) in the treatment of displaced comminuted olecranon fracture with a stable ulnohumeral joint (Mayo type IIB). The rationale of using this technique is that the sutures have been used to stabilize multiple fracture fragments in all sides of the olecranon.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between July 2018 and July 2021, 10 patients (7 women, 3 men; mean age, 49.9 years; mean fo

Hardware-related complications can occur when plate fixation is used to stabilize osteoporotic fractures involving the olecranon. The use of an additional nonlocking screw, placed retrograde into the proximal fracture segment, may improve stability under load. The purpose of this study was to conduct a biomechanical comparison of olecranon repair constructs with and without this additional retrograde screw. Nine matched pairs of elderly fresh-frozen cadaveric upper extremities were used. Two-part olecranon fractures were modeled, and fracture stabilization was performed. Olecranon plates were

INTRODUCTION: Surgery is the gold-standard treatment of displaced olecranon fracture, but is associated with numerous complications, especially in the elderly. Functional results of non-operative treatment in this population have never been analyzed in a prospective study.
STUDY HYPOTHESIS: Non-operative treatment of isolated olecranon fracture with stable elbow-joint in over 75-year-olds gives functional results comparable to those of surgery as reported in the literature, with fewer complications.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study analyzed functional results of non-operative treatm
