Congenital absence of the incus bilaterally without other otologic anomalies: a new case report.

We describe only the third reported case of congenital, bilaterally absent includes that were not accompanied by another otologic abnormality. This condition was detected in a 3-year-old boy who was being evaluated for a hearing impairment and speech and language delay. The patient was treated with partial ossicular replacement prostheses, which resulted in an improvement in his hearing.

Anatomical and functional results of ossiculoplasty using titanium prosthesis.

Titanium ossicular chain replacement prosthesis is often used for rehabilitation of the columellar effect in otologic surgeries. This retrospective study aims to analyse the anatomical and functional results of surgeries in which a titanium prosthesis was used. Two hundred and eighty procedures in 256 patients operated on in a tertiary referral center were analysed. Aetiologies, preoperative audiograms, peroperative data and postoperative outcomes at 2 and 12 months postoperatively were reviewed. Chronic suppurative otitis media with or without cholesteatoma was the main aetiology (89%). There

Development and evaluation of a low-cost 3D-printed simulator for ossicular prosthesis placement.

Experienced otologists achieve better functional outcomes and fewer complications post-surgery. Otology requires high surgical precision, with risks including total and permanent hearing loss in the operated ear. Although otologic surgical simulators exist, most are sophisticated and expensive. The main objective of this study was to develop and assess a reproducible, affordable, and effective middle ear surgical simulator, defined by its ability to improve residents' anatomical understanding, confidence, and basic technical skills in prosthesis placement. A simulator model was 3D-printed to a

Ossicular Chain Reconstruction Using Glass Ionomer Cement: Cement Alone and Cement with a Titanium Prosthesis Having a Helical Coil.

Cement ossiculoplasty and endoskeletal ossicular chain reconstruction using glass ionomer cement (GIC) are innovative techniques for restoring middle ear function after ossicular discontinuity. GIC is highlighted for its use with these techniques and biocompatibility, stability, and ability to bond with ossicles and titanium prostheses to help accomplish long-term, successful reconstructions and hearing outcomes. Fundamental principles of the methods that are described are: (1) attempt to replicate native anatomy as close as possible during ossicular chain reconstruction, (2) reduce extrusion

Congenital Absence of Stapes Suprastructure and Footplate: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital ossicular chain anomalies are rare conductive hearing loss conditions that remain difficult to diagnose even with high-resolution computed tomography (CT). The preoperative diagnosis is helpful for surgical planning and counseling patients regarding treatment outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case involving a 14-year-old boy presenting with left conductive hearing loss without history of trauma for 5 years, physical examination showed normal otoscopic examination bilaterally and high-resolution CT showed absent of stapes suprastructure and footplate. Subsequent

Long-term outcomes following pediatric endoscopic titanium ossiculoplasty: A single-institution experience.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic ossicular chain reconstruction (OCR) in adults has demonstrated equivalent outcomes to the traditional microscopic approach. Less data exist on endoscopic OCR outcomes in children, who have unique considerations including a smaller transcanal corridor and variable pathology. The purpose of this study was to investigate surgical and audiometric outcomes in children undergoing fully endoscopic and endoscopic-assisted OCR in both the short and long-term. METHODS: Retrospective review of all children (<17 years) who underwent endoscopic OCR at one tertiary care center bet

Active middle ear implants: Vibroplasty™ in children and adolescents with acquired or congenital middle ear disorders.

CONCLUSION: Active middle ear implant (AMEI) implantation in children and adolescents is safe and provides improved hearing results. No statistical difference in hearing outcomes was shown in the group of patients affected by chronic middle ear diseases versus aural atresia. Also, the transducer location (round window versus oval window placement) did not lead to different outcomes in hearing abilities. OBJECTIVES: (1) To assess the hearing outcomes with the active implant Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) in children and adolescents. (2) To evaluate whether functional results of the subjects in the

Ossiculoplasty for Trauma.

Most traumatic ossicular chain injury results from blunt head trauma associated with temporal bone fracture, though penetrating, barotraumatic, and iatrogenic causes are also encountered. Dislocation of the IS joint is the most common lesion, followed by IM separation and a stapes superstructure fracture. Management depends on the mechanism and severity. High-resolution temporal bone computed tomography aids in localizing disruption and identifying delayed ossicular fixation. Surgical reconstruction with autologous or artificial materials typically achieves postoperative air-bone gaps of 10 to

Prognostic Scoring Systems in Ossiculoplasty: A Comprehensive Review and Introduction of a Novel Predictive Index.

Ossiculoplasty remains a challenging surgical procedure, with outcomes heavily influenced by diverse anatomical and pathological factors. Over the decades, numerous scoring systems have been developed to predict the prognosis of ossiculoplasty, each emphasizing different variables such as ossicular status, middle ear environment, and surgical history. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the evolution of prognostic scoring systems, including Austin's original ossicular classification, Bellucci's otorrhea staging, the Middle Ear Risk Index (MERI), the Ossiculoplasty Outcome Parameter S
