Intermediate uveitis in Indian population.

PURPOSE: Intermediate uveitis (IU) is generally believed to be autoimmune in nature requiring systemic corticosteroid and immunomodulatory therapy. This belief stems from the published reports from the developed countries; and the scenario maybe different in the developing countries that maybe endemic for certain infections. There are no large series available on the etiologic causes of intermediate uveitis from the developing countries. The present series aims to describe the etiology, treatment, and course of IU in North Indian population. METHODS: In a retrospective analysis, records of 20

Nested polymerase chain reaction for Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA detection in aqueous and vitreous of patients with uveitis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis may be a lethal disease. Its ocular manifestations are commonly associated with severe difficulties in diagnosis and therapy; furthermore, it may cause blindness. DNA amplification methods may allow early detection of small amounts of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA to afford the possibility of prompt diagnosis. We evaluated a nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) assay for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA in aqueous and vitreous. METHODS: In a case-control study, 22 cases of diagnosed TB uveitis (three HIV-infected patients) and 38 controls (18 HIV-infect

Pediatric uveitis in southern Turkey.

Uveitis in the pediatric population is not so common, and the etiology is different from adults. In the present study the charts of the patients with onset of uveitis at 16 years of age or younger were reviewed in order to analyze the etiology in pediatric patients with uveitis, and to compare the results with other studies carried out on different populations. The charts of 90 cases, followed at the Uvea-Immunology Clinic of the Cukurova University Medical Faculty Department of Ophthalmology, between January 1987 and February 1996 were reviewed retrospectively. There were 47 girls, 43 boys, a

Autoimmunity and the outer retina.

Structurally and therefore antigenically the retina is a complex tissue. Since it develops as an extension from the neural tube it shares with the brain several cell membranes and cytoplasm associated antigens including those present in neurofilaments of the various neurones and the glial filaments of the astrocytes. The advent of monoclonal antibodies has helped to dissect, in detail, the antigenic makeup of the retina. Nervous system antigens (NS-3, 4 and 7) are generously represented in the retina. At least in the chick eye there seems to be a concentration gradient of retinal antigens alon

[Processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa Schiff) induced ocular lesions: case reports].

UNLABELLED: The Processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa Schiff), is an endemic insect of pine and cedar trees, existing both in rural and urban areas. Ocular toxicity, once rare due to the efficacy of eradication methods, is caused by the insects' hair and is expected to be more frequent with its recrudescence. We report two clinical cases and review the epidemiology of Processionary and its eye injuries. Case 1: a 64 year-old patient complained of red eye and foreign body sensation after being gardening. She had a BCVA of 0.5 and biomicroscopy revealed an epithelial erosion, flare (++), Tyndal

Ocular Manifestations of Multiple Sclerosis: A Retrospective, Population-Based Single-Center Study.

Background and objective Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system by causing inflammation and damage to myelinated axons. It often impacts the visual pathways, and optic neuritis (ON) is commonly the first symptom people notice. Eye movement disorders, including internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) and nystagmus, may result in double vision, oscillopsia, and reading fatigue. MS is also linked to ocular inflammation, such as pars planitis and retinal periphlebitis. This study aimed to identify the most common eye-related symptoms of MS and to determ

Cystoid macular edema: the apparent role of mechanical factors.

CME is the final common pathway of many intraocular and systemic diseases. It involves the retinal vasculature and often has a choroidal and vitreal component. Obviously, at some level of this complex pathophysiological process, mediators must be involved. The question is whether the characteristic distribution of vascular leakage and retinal edema is best explained by the diffusion of mediators released by from a remote site, as proposed by Miyake (see Miyake et al., 1989), or whether it reflects the distribution of pre-existing anatomical structures causing the local release of mediators by

Specific retinal vasculitis in HLA-A29 birdshot retinochoroiditis, distinguishing it from other causes of vasculitis: A pilot study.

PURPOSE: Human leukocyte antigen-A29 (HLA-A29) birdshot retinochoroiditis (BRC) is a noninfectious uveitis affecting independently the retina and the choroid. While the choroidal involvement is characterized by a stromal choroiditis, the retinal features of BRC were less well defined until a recent study determined a specific pattern of retinal involvement with seven features including profuse posterior retinal leakage, thick fluorescein angiography sheathing/staining, profuse disc hyperfluorescence, macular edema with foveal sparing, and circulatory arteriovenous pseudo delay. The aim of this
