Detecting Depression and Anxiety Among Adolescents in South Africa: Validity of the isiXhosa Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7.

PURPOSE: Screening tools such as the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) could potentially be used in resource-limited settings to identify adolescents who need mental health support. We examined the criterion validity of the isiXhosa versions of the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 in detecting depression and anxiety among adolescents (10-19 years) in South Africa. METHODS: Adolescents were recruited from the general population and from nongovernmental organizations working with adolescents in need of mental health support. The PHQ-9 and GAD-7 were culturally

Development of a Nomogram for Predicting Depression in the Elderly Using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 among a Nationwide Sample of Korean Elderly.

This cross-sectional study developed a nomogram that could allow medical professionals in the primary care setting to easily and visually confirm high-risk groups of depression. This study analyzed 4011 elderly people (≥60 years old) who completed a health survey, blood pressure, physical measurement, blood test, and a standardized depression screening test. A major depressive disorder was measured using the Korean version of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). This study built a model for predicting major depressive disorders using logistic regression analysis to understand the relation

[Prevalence of psychiatric disorders in French general practice using the patient health questionnaire: comparison with GP case-recognition and psychotropic medication prescription].

INTRODUCTION: Psychiatric disorders, mainly depression and anxiety, are frequently encountered in primary care and are a major cause of distress and disability. Nearly half of cases go unnoticed and among those that are recognised, many do not receive adequate treatment. In France, there is limited research concerning the prevalence, detection and management of these conditions in primary care. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders, overall and for the main psychiatric diagnostic categories, encountered in primary care; to describe general practitioners' (GPs') case

Systematic Review on Questionnaires Reporting Bowel Function and Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients With Hirschsprung Disease.

AIM: Impaired bowel function and reduced health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) are common after surgery for Hirschsprung disease (HD). There is yet no agreement on how to report these outcomes. This systematic review aims to describe which questionnaires, their properties, and how frequently they are used to report outcomes. Based on this, we recommend questionnaires to be used in future studies. METHODS: Predetermined searches were conducted in Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Trials, Ovid Medline, and Cinahl with no lower time limit until March 2024. The Covidence software was used in

Health-related quality of life of cranial WHO grade I meningioma patients: are current questionnaires relevant?

BACKGROUND: The clinical relevance of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in meningioma patients has been increasingly acknowledged in recent years. Various questionnaires have been used. However, almost none of these questionnaires has been particularly developed for and/or validated in this patient group. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the relevance and comprehensiveness of existing HRQoL questionnaires used in meningioma research and to assess the agreement between patients and health care professionals (HCPs) on the most relevant and important HRQoL issues. METHODS: A s

Severity of symptoms of psychiatric outpatients: use of the General Health Questionnaire in hospital ang general practice patients.

A sample of 91 new referrals to a community based psychiatric outpatient service was compared with a cross-matched control sample of 107 patients attending the general practitioner's surgery. The subjects in both groups completed the General Health Questionnaire and there was a very marked difference between the scores of the two groups. Seventy-five of the psychiatric group had a high score on the questionnaire, and a large number of these were extremely high, while 74 of the general practice group had a low score. The 'false' positives and negatives are discussed. It is considered that the v

Detecting anxiety and depression among infertile patients undergoing IVF-ET using the fertility quality of life and the patient health questionnaire-4 tools.

PURPOSE: Infertility is associated with considerable psychosocial distress, yet many affected individuals lack formal diagnosis or treatment. The Fertility Quality of Life (FertiQoL) tool is widely used to assess quality of life in infertile populations, while the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) is a validated screening tool for anxiety and depression. This study investigated whether FertiQoL could be applied as a screening measure to identify high-risk individuals during in vitro fertilization–embryo transfer (IVF-ET). METHODS: This study enrolled participants (320 patients with 444 va

Psychometric properties and age- and gender-specific normative values of the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 among older adults aged 60 years and above.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems in older adults are often underrecognized despite their substantial impact on health and well-being. Brief, valid screening tools with age-specific normative data are needed for this growing population. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) and established age- and gender-specific normative values for adults aged 60 years and older in Germany. METHODS: Data were drawn from four nationally representative face-to-face household surveys conducted in Germany between 2021 and 2024. Four of the total 3,212 pa

Cultural adaptation, validity and reliability of the Marathi language version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to screen depression in rural Maharashtra, India.

BACKGROUND: Screening is essential to bridge the significant care gap that exists for depression. PHQ-9 is a brief, valid, and reliable questionnaire, making it a valuable tool for detecting depression in both clinical and community settings. However, there is a lack of culturally and contextually appropriate local language versions of the PHQ-9, especially in India. This study aims to culturally adapt the existing Marathi version of the PHQ-9 for a rural Marathi-speaking population and evaluate its diagnostic accuracy and psychometric properties for detecting depression. METHODS: We followed

Psychometric properties of the ultra-brief self-report Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) to assess anxiety and depression in Arabic-speaking adults.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression are psychiatric disorders that often coexist and share some features. Developing a simple and cost-effective tool to assess anxiety and depression in the Arabic-speaking population, predominantly residing in low- and middle-income nations where research can be arduous, would be immensely beneficial. The study aimed to translate the four-item composite Patient Health Questionnaire - 4 (PHQ-4) into Arabic and evaluate its psychometric properties, including internal reliability, sex invariance, composite reliability, and correlation with measures of psychologica

Longitudinal invariance of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 among patients receiving pharmacotherapy for major depressive disorder: A secondary analysis of clinical trial data.

Comparing self-reported symptom scores across time requires longitudinal measurement invariance (LMI), a psychometric property that means the measure is functioning identically across all time points. Despite its prominence as a measure of depression symptom severity in both research and health care, LMI has yet to be firmly established for the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 depression module (PHQ-9), particularly over the course of antidepressant pharmacotherapy. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to assess for LMI of the PHQ-9 during pharmacotherapy for major depressive disorder. T
