The Cost of Scrutiny: Subclinical Social Anxiety and Performance Context Reshape Frontal-Midline Theta Network Reconfigurations during Probabilistic Learning.

Social anxiety is reliably characterized by biases toward avoidance and aversive learning. Frontal-midline theta (FM-theta) oscillations have been implicated as a key neural mechanism underlying these learning biases. Here, we combined a dynamic network neuroscience approach with computational modeling to investigate how FM-theta oscillatory activity coordinates large-scale functional network interactions on a trial-to-trial basis during feedback-guided learning. Additionally, we examined how these neural dynamics are associated with social anxiety across different social contexts. A sample of

Measuring behavioral responses to a social stressor: Does the Social Performance Rating Scale have utility beyond social anxiety disorder?

The observer-rated Social Performance Rating Scale (SPRS) indexes anxious behaviors exhibited in social contexts. Although the SPRS has been used almost exclusively to study social anxiety disorder (SAD), other emotional disorders are also characterized by heightened responses to social stressors, hinting that the SPRS could serve as a transdiagnostic state measure of behavioral anxiety. To explore this possibility, adults with generalized anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder (n = 105) and adults with no psychopathology (n = 35) delivered a speech to a committee of mock behavioral exp

Acute Effects of Self-Selected Music Intervention on Golf Performance and Anxiety Level in Collegiate Golfers: A Crossover Study.

Music has been reported as a positive intervention for improving psychophysiological conditions and exercise performance. However, the effects of music intervention on golf performance in association with psychophysiological responses have not been well examined in the literature. The purpose of the study was to investigate the acute effects of self-selected music intervention on golf swing and putting performance, heart rate (HR), HR variability (HRV), and anxiety. Twenty collegiate golfers voluntarily participated in this study (age = 20.2 ± 1.4 years, height = 171.7 ± 8.0 cm, body weight =

Body composition, anxiety, and fitness test performance in Chinese college students: biopsychosocial association patterns across gender-differentiated testing contexts.

BACKGROUND: Physical and psychological factors jointly relate to physical performance, yet few studies have examined the indirect associations through which body composition and exercise behavior relate to performance via psychological factors. This study examined whether biopsychosocial association patterns with fitness test performance differ across gender-differentiated testing contexts that impose different physical demands, using China's mandatory national fitness testing system as a naturalistic paradigm. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1,916 Chinese college student

Comparison of dyad versus individual simulation-based training on stress, anxiety, cognitive load, and performance: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Dyad learning has been shown to be an effective tool for teaching procedural skills, but little is known about how dyad learning may impact the stress, anxiety, and cognitive load that a student experiences when learning in this manner. In this pilot study, we investigate the relationship between dyad training on stress, anxiety, cognitive load, and performance in a simulated bradycardia scenario. METHODS: Forty-one fourth-year medical school trainees were randomized as dyads (n = 24) or individuals (n = 17) for an education session on day 1. Reassessment occurred on day 4 and was

Infliximab and Tocilizumab Reduce Anxiety-Like Behaviour and Improve Cognitive Performance in a Juvenile Collagen-Induced Arthritis Rat Model.

Anxiety disorders and cognitive decline are highly prevalent in rheumatic diseases, including Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). In this study, we investigated the effect of long-term treatment with infliximab and tocilizumab on anxiety-like behaviour and cognitive performance in a juvenile collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rat model. Forty-nine rats with established moderate arthritis were randomly allocated into 7 equal groups: negative control, vehicle, methotrexate, infliximab, tocilizumab, methotrexate + infliximab and methotrexate + tocilizumab groups. Behavioural tests were performed t

Post-event processing in social anxiety disorder: Examining the mediating roles of positive metacognitive beliefs and perceptions of performance.

BACKGROUND: Post-event processing (PEP) is defined as repetitive negative thinking following anxiety provoking social events. PEP is thought to maintain anxiety symptoms in Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) but little is known about the specific factors that contribute to the maintenance of PEP. AIMS: The current study investigated how perceptions of performance and positive metacognitive beliefs might contribute to the persistence of PEP. METHOD: Participants with SAD (n = 24) as well as anxious (n = 24) and healthy (n = 25) control participants completed a standardized social performance task

The Potential of Conversational Agents for the Realisation of Attention Bias Modification Training Approach to Address Performance Anxiety in Vocal Education.

Performance anxiety remains a persistent barrier in higher vocal education because it can undermine both technical control and expressive delivery during public singing. This study examined whether a chatbot-delivered, ABMT-informed intervention could reduce performance anxiety among student vocalists and improve selected performance outcomes under routine training conditions. The study included 203 fourth-year vocal students assigned to either a psychologically active Shim chatbot condition or a neutral-script chatbot control condition over a four-month intervention period. A Comparison of Gaming Behavior between Teens and Preteens and its Association with Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and Academic Performance in Children.

BACKGROUND: Video games have emerged as a significant and timely source of entertainment among teens and preteens, primarily targeting the younger generation while also gaining popularity among the older population. Numerous studies have demonstrated that symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression can impact children's academic performance and may result in school dropout. However, to date, no research has examined these three conditions specifically in Jordanian high school students. Therefore, this study aims to compare the gaming behavior of teens and preteens and its relationship to memor

Effects of tailored interventions for anxiety management in choking-susceptible performing artists: a mixed-methods collective case study.

INTRODUCTION: Not being able to manage performance anxiety and subsequently experiencing a decline in performance have been called "choking under pressure". High trait anxiety and fear of negative evaluation, as well as low self-efficacy or self-confidence, can put performers especially at risk of experiencing choking. This study, therefore, examined the effects of psychological choking interventions tailored to "choking-susceptible" performing artists individually in a coaching setting. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods (QUANT + QUAL) collective case study with nine performing artists, w

Effects of between-person differences and within-person changes in symptoms of anxiety and depression on older age cognitive performance.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression are both important correlates of cognitive function. However, longitudinal studies investigating how they covary with cognition within the same individual are scarce. We aimed to simultaneously estimate associations of between-person differences and within-person variability in anxiety and depression with cognitive performance in a sample of non-demented older people. METHODS: Participants in the Lothian Birth Cohort 1921 study, a population-based narrow-age sample (mean age at wave 1 = 79 years, n = 535), were examined on five occasions across 13 years. Anx

Performance in anxiety and spatial memory tests following bilateral vestibular loss in the rat and effects of anxiolytic and anxiogenic drugs.

Vestibular dysfunction in humans is associated with anxiety and cognitive disorders. However, various animal studies of the effects of vestibular loss have yielded conflicting results, from reduced anxiety to increased anxiety, depending on the particular model of vestibular dysfunction and the anxiety test used. In this study we revisited the question of whether rats with surgical bilateral vestibular deafferentation (BVD) exhibit changes in anxiety-related behaviour by testing them in the open field maze (OFM), elevated plus maze (EPM) and elevated T maze (ETM) in the presence of a non-sedat

Neural indices of performance monitoring are associated with daily emotional functioning in youth with anxiety disorders: An ERP and EMA study.

Excessive monitoring of one's performance is a characteristic of anxiety disorders that has been linked to alterations in implicit emotion regulation (ER), including elevations in neural measures of performance monitoring (i.e., error- and correct-related negativity; ERN and CRN). Elevations in ERN and CRN amplitudes have been reported consistently in anxiety disorders, suggesting that an overactive performance monitoring system is linked to ER difficulties in anxiety. Yet, the relevance of these lab-based neural measures for day-to-day emotional functioning remains poorly understood. This stu

Beyond Fear of Failure: Exploring the Relationships between Parental Overprotection, Parental Criticism, Children's/Adolescents' Self-Compassion and their Performance Anxiety.

In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in performance-related concerns and a heightened fear of failure among children and adolescents across various settings, such as academics and sports. Despite this trend, research specifically addressing performance anxiety remains limited, with most studies focusing on the broader category of social anxiety. This study addresses this gap by investigating how perceived parental criticism and self-compassion among children/adolescents mediate the relationship between parental overprotection and performance anxiety during childhood and adoles
