The role of the L-arginine-nitric oxide pathway for peristalsis in the opossum oesophageal body.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of NG-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA), an inhibitor of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, on primary peristalsis in the oesophageal body. METHODS: Peristalsis was induced by pharyngeal stroking in 14 lightly anaesthetized opossums. Oesophageal pressures were monitored with a four-channel, perfused catheter assembly and registered with external transducers 1, 4, 7, and 10 cm proximal to the oesophagogastric junction. Propagation time was the time taken for a contraction to travel between two recording sites and was determined in the proximal, mid

A case of Hirschsprung disease of total intestinal aganglionosis with intestinal dilatation and peristalsis on prenatal ultrasound.

OBJECTIVE: To present a case of total intestinal aganglionosis (TIA), which is the rarest form of Hirschsprung disease (HD) and is difficult to diagnose prenatally owing to nonspecific prenatal ultrasound findings. CASE REPORT: In a 34-year-old primipara with a history of HD (total colonic aganglionosis), intestinal dilatation with intestinal movement like peristalsis was observed in the fetus starting at 36 weeks of gestation. By 38 weeks of gestation, the fetal abdominal circumference had increased, prompting cesarean section delivery. Prenatal ultrasound and postnatal barium enema findings

Attenuation of intestinal peristalsis with age is attributed to decreased sensitivity of receptors in the enteric nervous system.

Constipation and other digestive disorders are common in older adults. The autonomic nervous system plays a critical role in regulating digestive motility in the intestinal tract. However, studies on age-related changes in autonomic function and receptor expression in the intestinal tract are limited. In this study, we examined the expression of neurotransmitter receptors in the autonomic nervous system and the effects of acetylcholine and β-agonists on intestinal contraction and relaxation in the jejunum of aged rats. Jejunal sections collected from male and female Wistar/ST rats aged 4, 11,

Evaluation of Gastric Peristalsis Using Cine MRI in Healthy Subjects and Patients With Functional Dyspepsia.

INTRODUCTION: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is subdivided into postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) and epigastric pain syndrome (EPS), each with a different pathophysiological mechanisms driving the symptoms of these syndromes. Cine MRI aids observation in any continuous cross-section and measures gastrointestinal peristalsis without radiation exposure. In this study, we aimed to evaluate gastric peristalsis in FD using cine MRI. METHODS: This study was a prospective interventional study. Patients diagnosed with FD according to ROME IV diagnostic criteria were included. Cine MRI was performed be

Efficacy of Glycicumarin and Isoliquiritigenin in Suppressing Colonic Peristalsis in Both an Animal Model and a Clinical Trial.

Patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) show excessive peristalsis, and antispasmodic agents may be useful therapeutic agents. There are few reports on the use of Kampo medicines for the treatment of IBS-D. Shakuyakukanzoto (SKT) is a Kampo medicine that is effective against abdominal pain. We examined the relationship between SKT and intestinal peristalsis in an animal model and a prospective study. In the animal model, SKT and its components were administered from the serosal side of the colon and colonic peristalsis was evaluated using intraluminal pressure and s

Topographical plots of esophageal distension and contraction: effects of posture on esophageal peristalsis and bolus transport.

Each swallow induces a wave of inhibition followed by contraction in the esophagus. Unlike contraction, which can easily be measured in humans using high-resolution manometry (HRM), inhibition is difficult to measure. Luminal distension is a surrogate of the esophageal inhibition. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of posture on the temporal and quantitative relationship between distension and contraction along the entire length of the esophagus in normal healthy subjects by using concurrent HRM, HRM impedance (HRMZ), and intraluminal ultrasound (US). Studies were conducted in 1

A study of ureteric peristalsis using a single catheter to record EMG, impedance, and pressure changes.

Ureteric peristalsis transports a urinary bolus from the renal pelvis to the bladder. We developed an intraluminal catheter with a pressure transducer on it to study intraluminal pressure changes and a twin bipolar electrode to record the ureteric EMG and impedance (Z) changes during a peristaltic wave. Five female New Yorkshire pigs (50-60 kg) were studied under light halothane anesthesia (5% at induction/1% for maintenance). A steady state of hydration was maintained using intravenous saline infusion. EMG spike burst activity was studied at a 10-cm interval using low (0-30) Hz filters. Imped

Chronic ureteric obstruction and its impact on the coordinating mechanisms of peristalsis (pyeloureteric pacemaker system).

We present the results of a study designed to characterise urine transport in the healthy and chronically obstructed upper urinary tract. Fifteen healthy and 11 hydronephrotic pigs were used; experimental hydronephrosis was produced by partially obstructing the ureter. Data consisting of the peristaltic rate, bolus volume, and the urine flow rate were collected and related to varying increments of diuresis. The transmission characteristics of renal pelvic to ureteric contractions were studied by extracellular electrodes. Similarly, in hydronephrotic preparations we studied the transmission bet

A symbiont-derived biosurfactant couples bacterial surface behavior and host peristalsis to control colonization.

Hosts must control symbiont abundance to ensure stable associations with their beneficial microbes, while also minimizing potentially harmful unrestricted microbial proliferation. Yet, the microbial stimuli and involved host responses that shape this colonization control, are usually unknown - in spite of their central role in shaping host-microbe and, more broadly, host-microbiota interactions. Here, using the natural association between Caenorhabditis elegans and its symbiont Pseudomonas lurida MYb11, we combine an unbiased bacterial genetic screen with a host-response reporter to identify t

NIR and Oxidative Stress-Modulated Intestinal Peristalsis Motion of Tubular Conductive Thermo-Hydrogel Actuator.

Actuators for soft bionic robotics, utilizing disease microenvironment-responsive and mechanically flexible materials, are influenced by intra- and intermolecular structures of hydrogels. However, they lack the required endogenous stimuli responsiveness necessary for applications like gastrointestinal-targeted drug screening and liquid/mass transport. Herein, a tubular conductive, reactive oxygen species (ROS)- and an near infrared (NIR)-responsive thermo-hydrogel actuator (THA) was fabricated for viscous liquid and solid transport. Effects of capsaicin-containing red pepper sauce suspension on esophageal secondary peristalsis in humans.

BACKGROUND: Capsaicin-sensitive afferents have been implicated in the modulation of gastrointestinal sensorimotor functions. Secondary peristalsis is important for the clearance of retained refluxate or material from the esophagus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of capsaicin-containing red pepper sauce suspension on esophageal secondary peristalsis in healthy adults. METHODS: After a baseline recording of esophageal motility, secondary peristalsis was generated by slow and rapid mid-esophageal injections of air in 10 healthy subjects. Two separate sessions with saline and c

Peristalsis of airway smooth muscle is developmentally regulated and uncoupled from hypoplastic lung growth.

Prenatal airway smooth muscle (ASM) peristalsis appears coupled to lung growth. Moreover, ASM progenitors produce fibroblast growth factor-10 (FGF-10) for lung morphogenesis. Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is associated with lung hypoplasia, FGF-10 deficiency, and postnatal ASM dysfunction. We hypothesized ASM dysfunction emerges in tandem with, and may contribute toward, the primordial lung hypoplasia that precedes experimental CDH. Spatial origin and frequency of ASM peristaltic waves were measured in normal and hypoplastic rat lungs cultured from day 13.5 of gestation (lung hypoplasi

Uterine peristalsis: comparison of transvaginal ultrasound and two different sequences of cine MR imaging.

PURPOSE: To compare uterine peristalsis as seen on two different magnetic resonance (MR) imaging sequences and transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS), so as to better determine the best method for evaluating uterine peristalsis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven women in the periovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle underwent TVUS and cine MR imaging within a time period of three hours. Findings on cine MR images obtained with a serial 60 half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin-echo (HASTE) sequence and a 300 true fast imaging with steady-state precession (FISP) sequence were compared with TVUS.

Development of pseudoachalasia following magnetic sphincter augmentation (MSA) with restoration of peristalsis after endoscopic dilation.

Pseudoachalasia is mimicking clinical and physiologic manifestations of idiopathic achalasia but results from alternative etiologies that infiltrate or obstruct the esophagogastric junction (EGJ). Anti-reflux surgery is one of the potential etiologies of pseudoachalasia. The majority of cases with persistent dysphagia after a tightly constructed Nissen fundoplication results from EGJ outlet obstruction (EGJOO) and in rare cases progresses to pseudoachalasia. In these extreme cases, endoscopic dilation is not a sufficient treatment and take down of fundoplication would be necessary. In this cas

Relationship between distension-contraction waveforms during esophageal peristalsis: effect of bolus volume, viscosity, and posture.

High-resolution esophageal manometry (HRM) in its current form assesses only the contraction phase of peristalsis. Degree of esophageal distension ahead of contraction is a surrogate of relaxation and can be measured from intraluminal esophageal impedance measurements. The characteristics of esophageal contractions, i.e., their amplitude, duration, velocity, and modulating factors, have been well studied. We studied the effect of bolus volume and viscosity and posture on swallow-induced distension and contraction and the temporal relationship between the two. HRM impedance recordings of 50 hea
