Correlation between maximum phonetically balanced word recognition score and pure-tone auditory threshold in elder presbycusis patients over 80 years old.

CONCLUSIONS: The maximum phonetically balanced word recognition score (PBmax) showed poor correlation with pure-tone thresholds in presbycusis patients older than 80 years. OBJECTIVES: To study the characteristics of monosyllable recognition in presbycusis patients older than 80 years of age. METHODS: Thirty presbycusis patients older than 80 years were included as the test group (group 80+). Another 30 patients aged 60-80 years were selected as the control group (group 80-) . PBmax was tested by Mandarin monosyllable recognition test materials with the signal level at 30 dB above the averag

Implications of congenitally missing teeth: orthodontic and restorative procedures in the adult patient.

Missing teeth are a concern to the patient and restorative dentist, and this social liability can be a multifactorial problem that involves esthetics, phonetics, disease, function, and stabilization. Dental caries, trauma, and periodontal disease are usually identified by pain, food impaction, discomfort, and lack of esthetics or poor phonetics. Restorative dentists are concerned with all aspects of the general health and appearance of the stomatognathic system and not only have the responsibility for immediate correction of an extant problem, but also for ensuring long-term "outcomes." Event-related brain potentials elicited during phonological processing differentiate subgroups of reading disabled adolescents.

Visual and auditory rhyme judgment tasks were administered to adolescent dyslexics and normal readers while event-related brain potentials were recorded. Reading disabled subjects were split into two groups based on a median split of scores on a visual non-word decoding test. The better decoders were called Phonetics and the poorer decoders were referred to as Dysphonetics. Single syllable, real word stimuli were used, and both rhyming and non-rhyming targets had a 50% chance for matching orthography. In the visual paradigm the normal readers exhibited a left frontal CNV before targets, a larg

Acoustic and electroglottographic analyses of nonpathological, nonmodal phonation.

Languages where phonation type and tone are contrastive make use of extremely fine and controlled actions of laryngeal structures; hence, there is little opportunity to variation in either phonation or pitch. Nonetheless, many American Indian languages have contrastive nonmodal phonation, which, moreover, is subject to a great deal of variation. There are a few studies addressing the phonetics of nonmodal phonation in American Indian languages, and little is known about the phonetics/phonology interface of laryngeal features within the sound patterns of these languages. This article aims to co

Morphology beyond the morpheme: distributed processing effects in the acoustic realization of German word-final clusters.

This study investigates how morphological structure shapes phonetic realization in German word-final /Cst/ clusters, with a focus on form-meaning mapping strategies in elicited speech. Phonologically identical clusters are compared across simplex words and inflected verb forms, where /st/ encodes a grammatical morpheme. We analyse duration, intensity, and spectral center of gravity (COG) for clusters, individual segments, and adjacent vowels, modeling their variation with linear mixed-effects models. Rather than yielding uniform phonetic shifts, morphology-related effects emerge as context-sen

Characterizing Speech Errors Across Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech Subtypes.

PURPOSE: Apraxia of speech (AOS) is a motor speech disorder affecting articulatory planning and speech programming. When AOS is the sole manifestation of neurodegeneration, it is termed primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS). Recent work has shown that there are distinct PPAOS subtypes: phonetic, prosodic, and those that do not clearly align with either (mixed). PPAOS subtypes differ with respect to the predominating motor speech difficulties, as well as disease progression and underlying pathology. Because past studies have determined PPAOS subtype based on clinical impression, the goa

Deep learning-derived measures of sound-level accuracy in primary progressive apraxia of speech: A feasibility pipeline with descriptive evidence from two cases.

Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech (PPAOS) is a neurodegenerative motor speech disorder marked by disrupted speech planning and programming. This study demonstrates the implementation and interpretability of phonological-class-based posterior probability values generated by Phonet (a deep learning model) in two individuals with PPAOS (one phonetic, one prosodic predominant), across different speech rates and delayed auditory feedback (DAF) settings. Phonet generated frame-level posterior probabilities for phonological classes, which were aggregated and aligned with segment durations. The pr

A trial of piracetam in two subgroups of students with dyslexia enrolled in summer tutoring.

Sixty children with dyslexia (41 boys, 19 girls; ages 9 to 13) were enrolled in a 10-week summer tutoring program that emphasized word-building skills. They were randomly and blindly assigned to receive either placebo or piracetam, a purportedly memory-enhancing drug that has been reported to facilitate reading skill acquisition. The children were subtyped as "dysphonetic" or "phonetic" on the basis of scores from tests of phonological sensitivity and phoneme-grapheme correspondence skills. Of the 53 children who completed the program, 37 were classified as dysphonetic and 16 as phonetic. The

Are your minimal pairs too neat? The dangers of phonemicisation in phonology therapy.

Using Conversation Analysis (CA) to look at the interactional dynamics of therapy repair sequences, this paper shows exactly what happens for children when idealised misrepresentations of their phonology are used in therapy. The primary video extract involves a 4-year-old phonologically disordered boy and his therapist. It is not new to warn of the dangers of overlooking any subtle phonetic distinctions that the phonologically disordered child may have but this paper adds something new to the debate. The child's interpretation of the adult's prior turn in the sequence is made explicit and the

Schizophrenia and the structure of language: the linguist's view.

Patients with schizophrenia often display unusual language impairments. This is a wide ranging critical review of the literature on language in schizophrenia since the 19th century. We survey schizophrenic language level by level, from phonetics through phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. There are at least two kinds of impairment (perhaps not fully distinct): thought disorder, or failure to maintain a discourse plan, and schizophasia, comprising various dysphasia-like impairments such as clanging, neologism, and unintelligible utterances. Thought disorder appears to be p

Dyslexia impairs speech recognition but can spare phonological competence.

Dyslexia is associated with numerous deficits to speech processing. Accordingly, a large literature asserts that dyslexics manifest a phonological deficit. Few studies, however, have assessed the phonological grammar of dyslexics, and none has distinguished a phonological deficit from a phonetic impairment. Here, we show that these two sources can be dissociated. Three experiments demonstrate that a group of adult dyslexics studied here is impaired in phonetic discrimination (e.g., ba vs. pa), and their deficit compromises even the basic ability to identify acoustic stimuli as human speech. Event-related brain potentials elicited by rhyming and non-rhyming pictures differentiate subgroups of reading disabled adolescents.

Event-related brain potentials were recorded while disabled adolescent subjects read and judged whether two sequentially presented pictures had names that rhymed. Subjects with relatively good phonetic skills displayed an N400 priming effect, i.e., a significant reduction in the amplitude of the negative peak, occurring approximately 400 msec post-stimulus, for pictures with names that rhymed with preceding pictures as compared with pictures that had names that did not rhyme with the prime. No such effect was evident for subjects with relatively poor phonetic skills. This lack of an N400 primi

EEG power spectra of adolescent poor readers.

EEG power spectra were studied in two poor-reading adolescent groups (dysphonetic and phonetic) as the students viewed strings of letters and easy words (seven categories). The students ranged in age from 12 to 16 years; 29 were male, 9 were female. Bilateral results are reported from frontal, parietal, and occipital regions. Significant Group x Hemisphere effects were found in the alpha and beta bands, with the phonetic group showing right greater than left asymmetry. This finding was interpreted to reflect more circumscribed and mature processing in the phonetically abler poor readers, given

Analysis of the therapeutic progress of children with phonological disorders after the application of the Multiple Oppositions Approach.

The Multiple Oppositions Approach is described as an alternative model for the treatment of children with the severe phonological disorders. The aim of this study was to analyze the therapeutic progress of five children with phonological disorder, submitted to the Multiple Oppositions Approach, regarding the phonetic (sounds) and phonological (phonemes and altered distinctive features) inventories. Participants were five children with phonological disorder, with mean age of 6 years and 1 month. Speech data were collected through phonological assessment, and the Multiple Oppositions Approach wa

Initial evidence of vowel space reduction in a subset of individuals with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Acoustic phonetic measures have been found to correlate with negative symptoms of schizophrenia, thus offering a path toward quantitative measurement of such symptoms. These acoustic properties include F1 and F2 measurements (affected by tongue height and tongue forward/back position, respectively), which determine a general "vowel space." Among patients and controls, we consider two phonetic measures of vowel space: average Euclidean distance from a participant's mean F1 and mean F2, and density of vowels around one standard deviation of mean F1 and of F2. METHODS: Structured and

Impact of anterior single-tooth implants on quality of life, articulation and oromyofunctional behaviour: a pilot study.

The main purpose of this study is to determine the impact (one and a half year after implantation) of a single-tooth implant on articulation and oromyofunctional behaviour. This information is important for dentists, orthodontists or stomatologists who treat professional speakers. Objective (acoustic analysis) as well as subjective (questionnaire, phonetic inventory, phonetic analysis, oromyofunctional assessment of lip and tongue function, blowing, sucking and swallowing) assessment techniques were used to determine the quality of life, articulation and oromyofunctional behaviour.
