Use of a scattered light sensor for monitoring the dispersed surface in multimodal system.

The article presented here deals with the quality parameter dispersed surface in material systems like suspensions or dispersions in which several phases are present simultaneously such as solids in continuous solution. Here, other quality parameters are relevant for the quality of the products than, for example, in pure solutions or gases. The dispersed surface is relevant for reaction rates, absorption capacity, and many other properties of the suspension. In contrast to the common method of measuring particle size distributions and solid concentrations in a complex manner, the article shows

Attic dust assessment near a wood treatment plant: past air pollution and potential exposure.

The wood treatment process uses substances that generate hazardous compounds that may contaminate environmental compartments. In the present study, an area under influence of a deactivated wood treatment plant was investigated to evaluate past air pollution and to try to understand local air dispersion. Attic dust samples were collected from eight residences around the plant and from two residences outside this area, as reference samples. The presence of copper, chromium, arsenic, pentachlorophenol, sixteen priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and mutagenic activity using Salmonella/micro

Improved dissolution of Kaempferia parviflora extract for oral administration by preparing solid dispersion via solvent evaporation.

Kaempferia parviflora, a plant in the family Zingiberaceae, has been used in Thai traditional medicines for treating hypertension and promoting longevity with good health and well-being. However, its limited aqueous solubility and low dissolution restrict its bioavailability. The aim of the study was therefore to improve the dissolution rate of K. parviflora extracted with dichloromethane (KPD) by solid dispersions. Different water-soluble polymers were applied to improve dissolution of KPD. The solid dispersions in different ratios were prepared by solvent evaporation method. Only hydroxyprop

Spatial and depth structuring predominate over temporal variation in Mediterranean climate grassland soil viral communities.

Viruses have the potential to influence microbial community structure and elemental cycling in soils, but it remains unclear how these communities are distributed across space and time, which can shape how they respond to environmental change and impact ecosystem processes. Mediterranean climate ecosystems, with their pronounced seasonal moisture fluctuations, offer an ideal system to examine viral biogeography. While previous studies hint at spatial structuring and moisture controls on viral communities, temporal responses to seasonal moisture shifts have not been comprehensively investigated

Larvicidal potential of Trigonella foenum-graecum and Vitis vinifera seed oil nanoemulsions against Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae).

The increasing resistance of mosquito vectors to conventional insecticides highlights the urgent need for alternative and sustainable control strategies. Although plant-derived oils are selected due to their high content of bioactive compounds, especially unsaturated fatty acids and phenolic constituents, which have been reported to exhibit promising larvicidal activity and membrane-disrupting properties, their practical application is often limited by poor aqueous dispersibility, low physicochemical stability, and variable bioavailability. In addition, studies linking chemical composition to

Disentangling biotic and abiotic drivers of a neotropical mistletoe.

Parasitic plants known as mistletoes are a key resource in ecosystems and form intricate networks of biotic interactions. Several mistletoe species exhibit specific associations with particular hosts and dispersers, such as Psittacanthus robustus, which is distributed across South America. Here, we assessed the climatic niche similarity between P. robustus, its host trees, and seed dispersers, and identified the main factors influencing the parasite's occurrence. We analyzed the spatial overlap among P. robustus, hosts, and seed dispersers using niche equivalence and similarity tests and asses

The diversity, drivers, consequences and management of plant invasions in the mangrove ecosystems.

Mangrove ecosystems, which occupy intertidal environments across tropical and subtropical regions, provide crucial ecosystem services, such as protecting the coastal areas by reducing the impact of cyclones, storms, and tidal waves. Anthropogenic activities such as human settlements, deforestation, pollution, and climate change have increased the risk of biological invasions in mangrove habitats. Plant species can be introduced to mangrove habitats via anthropogenic means, such as trade and transportation, urbanisation, and agriculture, as well as through natural processes like wind, floods, c

Characterization and prediction of odours from municipal sewage treatment plant.

One of the causes of public discomfort and complaint about odour in China is the nuisance odour, generated from the municipal sewage treatment plants. With the ability to be dispersed over a long distance, the odours can affect a large number of people. With the aim of identifying the compounds contributing the most to the overall odour emanating from municipal sewage treatment plant, and developing a prediction model for sensory odour concentration based on the compound odour activity value (OAV), odour samples from 2 days were collected at a municipal sewage treatment plant in Tianjin in the

Ultrasound-Assisted Processing of Amorphous Hydrated Carbon Oxide from Plant Origin: Properties and Biocompatibility of Conductive Nanocomposites as a Proposal for Food Packaging.

The sustainable production of conductive carbon nanomaterials for food-packaging applications remains limited by dispersion instability and safety concerns. Herein, we investigate the ultrasound-assisted processing of plant-derived hydrated amorphous carbon oxide (HACO) to obtain stable, conductive, and biocompatible nanostructured dispersions. Ultrasonic cavitation was applied in a hydroalcoholic medium, and a full 23 factorial design was used to evaluate the effects of sonication amplitude and time on particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), and zeta potential, together with acoustic param

Reduced Antibiotic Resistance in the Rhizosphere of Lupinus albus in Mercury-Contaminated Soil Mediated by the Addition of PGPB.

The emergence of antibiotic resistance (AR) poses a threat to the "One Health" approach. Likewise, mercury (Hg) pollution is a serious environmental and public health problem. Its ability to biomagnify through trophic levels induces numerous pathologies in humans. As well, it is known that Hg-resistance genes and AR genes are co-selected. The use of plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can improve plant adaptation, decontamination of toxic compounds and control of AR dispersal. The cenoantibiogram, a technique that allows estimating the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of a microbial c

Improved asthma outcomes observed in the vicinity of coal power plant retirement, retrofit, and conversion to natural gas.

Coal-fired power plants release substantial air pollution, including over 60% of U.S. sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions in 2014. Such air pollution may exacerbate asthma however direct studies of health impacts linked to power plant air pollution are rare. Here, we take advantage of a natural experiment in Louisville, Kentucky, where one coal-fired power plant retired and converted to natural gas, and three others installed SO2 emission control systems between 2013 and 2016. Dispersion modeling indicated exposure to SO2 emissions from these power plants decreased after the energy transitions. We

Exploring the impact of quercetin on the growth and biofilm formation of Leptospira interrogans.

Leptospira interrogans, the causative agent of leptospirosis, presents major challenges due to its ability to form environmental biofilms, persistent virulence, and emerging antimicrobial resistance. Plant-derived bioactive compounds offer promising alternatives to conventional antibiotics in targeting bacterial biofilms. This study investigates the antibiofilm and antimicrobial potential of quercetin, a plant-derived polyphenol, against L. interrogans. Quercetin significantly inhibited biofilm formation (91%), induced 44% biofilm dispersion at 500 µg/mL, and reduced viable cell counts by 92%

Deep seeding resistance in maize: selected after domestication or a strategy of its wild ancestors to escape underground animal burrowing?

Buried seeds avoid predation ensuring their survival until conditions are suitable for germination. The ability of seedlings to emerge from the soil depends on soil characteristics, burial depth, and the skotomorphogenic program of each species. This process is of interest to agriculture, as deep planting is practiced in wheat, sorghum, oats, and maize crops in certain arid and semi-arid regions of the world. In maize, deep planting can range from 10 to 40 cm, and only certain landraces are competent for this practice. It is known that deep-planting resistant varieties exhibit exaggerated meso

Reproductive uncertainty and the relative competitiveness of simultaneous hermaphroditism versus dioecy.

Hermaphroditism is typically associated with a sedentary existence, whereas dioecy is associated with mobility. This pattern is reflected within flowering plants, as dioecious species commonly possess traits that promote high dispersal. We investigated these associations with three population dynamics models (an individual-based simulation and two mathematical models, one deterministic and the other stochastic) that allowed us to examine competition for space between a hermaphroditic and dioecious species from different perspectives. The competing species are identical in every way but their s

Two telomere-to-telomere Nelumbo genome assemblies reveal domestication history and empower precision breeding.

Lotus (Nelumbo) is an ancient aquatic plant of major ecological, economic, and cultural importance, yet its genomic architecture and domestication history remain incompletely resolved. Here, we generate telomere-to-telomere reference genomes for the two extant species, Asian lotus (N. nucifera) and American lotus (N. lutea). Comparative genomics analysis reveals divergence in centromeric regions and chromosomal structural variation between the two species. Population analysis of 832 globally distributed lotus accessions supports tropical Asia as the primary dispersal cradle of Asian lotus. We

Sources and traits of bacteria and fungi found in the near-surface atmosphere.

Fungi and bacteria are ubiquitous in the near-surface atmosphere, and these airborne microbes can have important impacts on ecosystem and human health. Previous work has established that plant leaves and soils are the most likely sources of airborne microbes in natural, inland systems. Yet, the relative importance of these sources on the amounts and types of airborne microbes remain poorly quantified. Furthermore, not all microbes found in a source environment are equivalent in their ability to be aerosolized and persist in the near-surface atmosphere, but the specific traits associated with t

Do native and invasive herbivores have an effect on Brassica rapa pollination?

Mutualistic (e.g. pollination) and antagonistic (e.g. herbivory) plant-insect interactions shape levels of plant fitness and can have interactive effects. By using experimental plots of Brassica rapa plants infested with generalist (Mamestra brassicae) and specialised (Pieris brassicae) native herbivores and with a generalist invasive (Spodoptera littoralis) herbivore, we estimated both pollen movement among treatments and the visiting behaviour of honeybees versus other wild pollinators. Overall, we found that herbivory has weak effects on plant pollen export, either in terms of inter-treatme

Acceleration of evolutionary spread by long-range dispersal.

The spreading of evolutionary novelties across populations is the central element of adaptation. Unless populations are well mixed (like bacteria in a shaken test tube), the spreading dynamics depend not only on fitness differences but also on the dispersal behavior of the species. Spreading at a constant speed is generally predicted when dispersal is sufficiently short ranged, specifically when the dispersal kernel falls off exponentially or faster. However, the case of long-range dispersal is unresolved: Although it is clear that even rare long-range jumps can lead to a drastic speedup--as a

Banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa (Hemiptera: Aphididae): ecology and implications for the integrated management of banana bunchy top disease.

INTRODUCTION: Banana bunchy top disease (BBTD), caused by the banana bunchy top virus (BBTV), poses a growing threat to banana production in Africa and is spread locally by the banana aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa. Effective BBTD management requires better understanding of aphid habitat, dispersal, response to farm operations, and practical aphid vector and disease control options. METHODS: This study integrated field assessments, field experiments, and a laboratory trial in Uganda to characterize aphid ecology and refine integrated pest and disease management. RESULTS: Aphids were highly c

An interlamellar lipophilic layer regulates hygroscopic movements in moss peristomes.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The moss peristome regulates spore release via the hygroscopic movements of the articulated teeth over the capsule mouth. The presence of hydrophobic material inside the teeth has been sporadically reported, with different names and compositions proposed, and it was thought to cause hygroscopic movements. Here we investigated the origin, characteristics and function of this deposition, now termed the interlamellar lipophilic layer (ILL), with the aim of understanding it and its contribution to peristome hygroscopic movements. METHODS: The ontogeny of the ILL in Dicranum s
