Thermal stability and degradation kinetics of polystyrene/organically-modified montmorillonite nanocomposites.

Organically-modified montmorillonite (MMT) clays have been prepared using ammonium salts containing quinoline, pyridine, benzene, and styrenic groups. The nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending and the formation of nanocomposites was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Thermal stability and flammability were evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimetry measurements, respectively. The presence of modified MMT at 5% loading resulted in significant improvement in thermal stability compared to the virgin polymer. Effe

Time-resolved optical Kerr-effect investigation on CS2/polystyrene mixtures.

The relaxation dynamics of carbon disulfide are investigated in mixtures with polystyrene (PS) using the time-resolved optical heterodyne-detected optical Kerr effect (OHD-OKE). The data are analyzed using both the model-dependent approach, which assumes four distinct temporal responses, and the model-independent Fourier transform approach, which generates a spectral response that can be compared with results obtained by depolarized Rayleigh scattering. A slow dynamics is observed for the OHD-OKE transient decaying exponentially with a time constant that varies from 1.68 ps for neat CS2 to 3.7

[Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (Resonium A) as possible cause of rectal blood loss].

A 67-year-old man underwent laparotomy for a ruptured aneurysm of the abdominal aorta. Postoperatively he was treated with haemodialysis because of perioperatively developed acute renal failure. Hyperkalaemia was temporarily treated with sodium polystyrene sulfonate (Resonium A) after which he lost blood per rectum. A hemicolectomy was necessary because of intractable blood loss due to ulceration of the colon. This complication is related to uraemia and the use of sodium polystyrene sulfonate with or without sorbitol.

Conformational changes of fibronectin induced by polystyrene derivatives with a heparin-like function.

It was previously reported that polystyrene substituted with the sulfonate group, PSSO3, which has anticoagulant heparin-like properties, and then coated with fibronectin supports the growth of human umbilical vein endothelial cells. On the other hand, polystyrene substituted with the amino acid sulfamide group, PSSO2-Asp, which has a higher anticoagulant activity, and then coated with fibronectin no longer supported the growth of endothelial cells. We report here that, while the affinity of fibronectin to either polymer is of the same order of magnitude, fibronectin is adsorbed onto the PSSO2

[The use of sectional polystyrene plates in the set-up of lanthanide immunofluorescence analysis].

The authors have examined the possibility of using sectional polystyrene plates, made in this country, in time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (tr-FIA) with Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis and tick-borne encephalitis arboviruses, and with influenza A virus. The plates presensitized with specific antibodies were found fit for the detection of the antigens of the above viruses. These plates are not recommended for the detection of influenza A virus-specific proteins adsorbed directly onto the microplate surface.

Molecular Imprinted Polymers (MIP)-Based Electrochemical Sensing of Micro/Nano Polystyrene.

This article is based on the electrochemical sensing of micro- and/or nano-sized polystyrene (m/n-PS). A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based electrochemical sensing of nano polystyrene (nPS) of 100 nm and 500 nm sizes is demonstrated in this article. Poly-o-phenylenediamine (PoPD) is adopted as the MIP material and fabricated electrochemically (i.e., electro-polymerization) on the surface of the screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE), using o-phenylenediamine (oPD) as the monomer. To fabricate MIP selective to m/n-PS, PS of 100 and 500 nm were utilized as template material. Fabrication o

Inflammatory Microenvironment Reshapes the Protein Corona of Polystyrene Nanoplastics to Exacerbate Periodontitis Progression.

Nanoplastics (NPs) are emerging environmental pollutants with widespread human exposure and potential health risks. Once entering biological systems, NPs readily acquire a protein corona (PC) that governs their biological identity and toxicity. However, how disease-associated microenvironments reshape PC and modulate NPs toxicity remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of the oral inflammatory microenvironment on PC and the biological behavior of polystyrene (PS) NPs using periodontitis as a model disease. We identified a disease-specific PC formed in the saliva of periodo

Polystyrene nanoplastics induce ocular surface toxicity via endoplasmic reticulum stress.

The increasing environmental burden of micro/nanoplastics (M/NPs) has heightened concerns about their potential threat to ocular health, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying M/NPs-induced ocular surface injury remain largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the ocular toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) with a focus on the involvement of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. A mouse ocular exposure model and a human corneal epithelial (HCE-T) cell model were established. Multi-level analyses demonstrated that PS-NPs exposure induced ocular surface toxicity in mice, characteriz

Co-exposure of cadmium and polystyrene nanoplastics: Induction pyroptosis and autophagy in mice testis.

PURPOSE: Cadmium (Cd) and polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) are prevalent common environmental contaminants hat can accumulate in animal and human tissues through the food chain. This study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of Cd and/or PSNPs on mouse testicular tissue and to focus on the interplay between pyroptosis and autophagy in mediating this toxicity. METHODS: In a long-term toxicological study, male C57BL/6 mice was exposed to 1.5 mg/kg Cd, 1 mg/kg PSNPs (the environmentally relevant dose), or a combination of both for thirty-five days. After exposure, testicular tissues were anal

Single and combined chronic toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNP) and clothianidin on collembolans and enchytraeids.

This study assessed the chronic toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNP) and clothianidin (CLO), individually and as a binary mixture, on enchytraeids Enchytraeus crypticus and collembolans Folsomia candida. The assays were performed according to ISO protocols, using a tropical soil (Entisol) as the test substrate. The mixture assays were performed using equitoxic concentration, standardized according to the preliminary EC50 values for each contaminant (1 Toxic Unit = reproductive EC50 average), and the toxicological interactions were assessed through the Abbott model. Individually, CLO was

Uptake of polystyrene nanoplastics by cumulus-oocyte complexes impairs oocyte and embryo development.

Nanoplastics (NPs), plastic particles smaller than 1 μm, have gained increasing attention due to their potential health effects. Experimental studies in animals have shown that NPs can pass biological barriers, reach the female reproductive tract, and enter the ovary. Their presence in the ovary might have profound consequences for reproductive endpoints, such as oocyte development. This study aimed to investigate the uptake and associated effects of polystyrene (PS) NPs on oocyte and embryo development using a bovine in vitro fertilization (IVF) model. Preparation and Multifunctional Properties of Hydrophobic Electrospun Cellulose Acetate/Polystyrene Nanofibrous Membranes.

In this work, cellulose acetate (CA)/polystyrene (PS) composite nanofibrous membranes with various mass ratios (0/1, 1/1, 3/1, 5/1, 11/1, and 23/1) were fabricated via one-step electrospinning. The effects of the CA/PS ratio on fiber morphology, mechanical properties, porosity, wettability, air permeability, and thermal insulation were systematically investigated. Compared with the pure PS nanofibrous membranes, the CA/PS (3/1) membrane shows substantially enhanced structural and functional properties: porosity increases from 27.38% to 53.27%, air permeability from 56.45 ± 3.71 mm/s to 104.51

Accelerated Oxidative Degradation of Polystyrene: Correlating UV Aging with Reactive Molecular Dynamics.

This study investigates the oxidative degradation of polystyrene (PS) through a synergistic framework integrating UV-C-accelerated aging with Reactive Molecular Dynamics (ReaxFF) simulations. To bridge the gap between experimental and computational timescales, shock compression was employed in the simulations as an accelerator of degradation reactions. ATR-FTIR spectroscopy revealed the emergence of carbonyl (1717 cm-1) and peroxyester (1760 cm-1) bands, alongside dominant ether-type oxygen bridges (1260, 1209 cm-1). These experimental data, particularly the depletion of native aromatic bands

Airborne polystyrene nanoplastic exposure leads to splenic cell senescence and immune imbalance.

Recently, the widespread detection of microplastics and nanoplastics in the human body and their potential health risks have aroused global concern. As nanoplastics are much smaller than microplastics in diamter, their features, such as larger specific surface areas, and greater biopenetration, may lead them to have greater potential toxic effects on human. Research specifically focused on the biological effects of nanoplastics is still in its early stages. The spleen is an essential immune organ, but there is still a lack of research on the effects of airborne nanoplastics on its immune funct

Efficient Sulfonation of Syndiotactic Polystyrene Membranes Assessed by Small-Angle Neutron Scattering.

The selectivity of the δ-form of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) toward small organic molecules enables homogeneous functionalization by sulfonation of sPS membranes via soaking in a chloroform solution of a bulky sulfonating agent such as lauroyl sulfate. Sulfonated syndiotactic polystyrene (s-sPS) is hydrophilic and shows a high proton conductivity comparable to that of Nafion, which is the benchmark in proton-exchange membrane fuel cell technology. Therefore, s-sPS might represent a good candidate for the hydrocarbon alternative to the hazardous fluorinated compounds such as Nafion in variou

Polystyrene Microplastics Induce Nephrotoxicity via Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, Autophagy, and Ferroptosis.

Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs), pervasive environmental pollutants, pose a significant concern for kidney health. This review synthesizes current evidence to elucidate their nephrotoxic mechanisms. PS-MPs induce renal injury primarily by triggering oxidative stress, activating inflammatory pathways (e.g., NF-κB/NLRP3), and disrupting programmed cell death processes including autophagy and ferroptosis. Protein-protein interaction analysis identifies key hub genes like TP53 and TNF within this toxic network. Importantly, toxicity is modulated by particle properties, environmental aging, and

Effects of polystyrene microplastics and nanoplastics on the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis of Japanese quail.

The plastics pollution becomes a global environmental issue with both microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) pose a great risk to animal health. Therefore, we tried to determine the impacts of MPs and NPs on reproductive health of a farm poultry species-Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) from the perspective of the regulation of hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular (HPT) axis. One-week chicks were exposed to environmental relevance concentration of 0.4 mg/kg and 8 mg/kg polystyrene MPs and polystyrene NPs respectively for five weeks. The results showed MPs and NPs accumulated in the brain and

Polystyrene and polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastics differentially impact mouse ovarian follicle function.

Exposure to micro- and nanoplastics is unavoidable. Foods and beverages contain plastic particles from environmental contamination and processing and packaging materials, which are frequently made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Micro- and nanoplastics have been detected in human tissues such as the brain, liver, and placenta, as well as in ovarian follicular fluid, but little is known about the effects nanoplastics have on the female reproductive system. In addition, few studies on the health impacts of nanoplastics have been performed using environmentally relevant plastic types and con

Effects of polystyrene microplastics on mice cardiac tissue structure: Protective role of resveratrol.

Microplastics, as ubiquitous environmental particles, can influence cardiac function both directly and indirectly. We examined the beneficial effects of resveratrol on the cardiotoxicity induced by 2-μm polystyrene microplastics in murine models. Male NMRI mice (n = 27) Control, PS-MPs (1 mg/kg), and PS-MPs + RV (1 mg/kg PS-MPs+2.5 mg/kg RV) were randomly grouped into three. Histological and antioxidant parameters were assessed after 90 days of exposure. Our findings indicated that PS-MPs induce toxicity via oxidative stress, catalase (CAT), Total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase (SO

Polystyrene Nanoplastics Hitch-Hike the Gut-Brain Axis to Exacerbate Parkinson's Pathology.

The neurological implications of micro- and nanoplastic exposure have recently come under scrutiny due to the environmental prevalence of these synthetic materials. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a major neurological disorder clinically characterized by intracellular Lewy-body inclusions and dopaminergic neuronal death. These pathological hallmarks of PD, according to Braak's hypothesis, are mediated by the afferent propagation of α synuclein (αS) via the enteric nervous system, or the so-called gut-brain axis. Here we first examined the effect of enteric exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics on t
