Reconciling the Formal and Hidden Curricula in General Practice Training.

This reflective letter explores the relationship between the formal curriculum and the hidden curriculum (HC) in UK general practice (GP) training. Drawing on personal experience, it highlights a perceived disconnect between curriculum content and the realities of day-to-day GP practice. While trainees acquire a broad range of knowledge, some learning feels only indirectly relevant to independent practice. The HC - comprising implicit values, behaviours and cultural norms - emerges as a powerful influence on professional identity formation. Observed features include perceived underappreciation

Outcomes of an Interprofessional Opioid Training Program for Graduate Students in Nursing and Social Work.

Social workers and other behavioral health professionals trained to provide prevention, treatment, and recovery services for opioid use disorders (OUD) remain urgently needed in the U.S. particularly in states with widespread health professional shortage areas. To help mitigate this workforce gap, faculty in social work and nursing at a public university in Alabama developed and piloted an innovative HRSA-funded interprofessional traineeship to prepare graduate-level nursing and social work students to assess and treat opioid use disorders (OUD). The yearlong traineeship included specialized c

Pandemic preparedness and response among global healthcare workers using an interprofessional health practice framework: a scoping review protocol.

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant gaps in healthcare systems' preparedness and response capabilities including workforce coordination and collaborative practice. Although pandemic preparedness is often framed in terms of infrastructure and policy, the pandemic highlighted that health system responsiveness depends on how healthcare workers are educated and trained to collaborate, adapt, and make decisions. Healthcare workers operate within volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environments, necessitating new approaches to education and practice. In this scoping review we wi

Bridging the divide: addressing gaps in Australian health library services.

Access to evidence-based information is vital for safe, effective health care, yet Australia's health library services are increasingly fragmented and inequitable. This perspective highlights the critical role of clinical libraries and professional librarians, revealing gaps across hospitals, professions, and jurisdictions. It argues that Open Access and university libraries cannot meet clinicians' practical needs and calls for a nationally coordinated strategy, including a unified portal, harmonised standards, and workforce planning, to ensure all healthcare professionals can access and apply

Culture eats evidence for breakfast: how culture influences implementation of evidence-based practices.

BACKGROUND: Research has produced a substantial and expanding body of evidence-based practices (EBPs), encompassing interventions, programmes, clinical guidelines, protocols, care pathways and models of care supported by the best available evidence. Despite this, healthcare delivery is still frequently characterised as insufficiently evidence-based, reflecting a persistent gap between what is known to be effective and what is routinely implemented in practice. Traditional explanations only partially account for this gap, often overlooking culture as a critical yet under-theorized influence. Cu

New Voices, Shared Vision: How Emerging Research Scholars Are Supporting HPNA's Research Priorities.

Evidence-based practice is critical to providing high-quality hospice and palliative nursing care. Professional organizations, such as the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA), play a critical role in shaping the future of the hospice and palliative nursing field by identifying gaps in the science and fostering collaborative research efforts to inform evidence-based practices. One such driver is the tri-annual HPNA Research Agenda, which outlines key research priorities in hospice and palliative nursing, ultimately aiming to accelerate translation of research into practice and prac

Collaboration between dentists and general practitioners in primary care clusters in Hungary.

BACKGROUND: A substantial challenge in Hungary's publicly funded primary care system is the rising proportion of unfilled general practitioner and dentist practices over the past several years, which negatively impacts the public's access to primary care services. The practice cluster model introduced in 2021 aims to improve public access and strengthen collaboration among primary care providers, with a particular focus on interprofessional relationships between general practitioners and dentists. METHODOLOGY: As part of the study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 36 primary care

Access to treatment in prison: an inventory of medication preparation and distribution approaches.

The preparation and distribution of medication in prisons or jails are critical for individuals to access their treatment. This process is resource-intensive for healthcare professionals and may violate principles of confidentiality, autonomy, respect, and dignity if non-qualified staff are involved. However, there are no published best practices on the topic. This report aims to bridge this gap by presenting the results of a mapping exercise on different models of medication preparation and delivery. Authors call upon healthcare professionals to enrich this live document to inform health serv

American Association for the Surgery of Trauma emergency general surgery guideline summaries 2018: acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, acute diverticulitis, acute pancreatitis, and small bowel obstruction.

In April 2017, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) asked the AAST Patient Assessment Committee to undertake a gap analysis for published clinical practice guidelines in emergency general surgery (EGS). Committee members performed literature searches to catalogue published guidelines for common EGS diseases and also to identify gaps in the literature where guidelines could be created. For five of the most common EGS conditions, acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, acute diverticulitis, acute pancreatitis, and small bowel obstruction, we found multiple well-referenced g
