Betrayal trauma among homeless adults: associations with revictimization, psychological well-being, and health.

Betrayal trauma theory postulates that traumas perpetrated by a caregiver or close other are more detrimental to mental health functioning than are traumatic experiences in which the victim is not affiliated closely with the perpetrator. This study is the first to examine the concept of betrayal among a sample of individuals with a history of homelessness. A total of 95 homeless or formerly homeless adults completed the Brief Betrayal Trauma Survey, the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Civilian Version, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale the Perceived Stress Scale, an

Onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms after psychological trauma may result in erroneous diagnostic bias.

We report a case of neuroacanthocytosis, which was misdiagnosed as conversion disorder. Because the onset was after a psychologically stressful physical trauma, the patient's symptoms were interpreted in terms of psychological regression. The case clearly points out the defects of descriptive psychiatric diagnosis, especially in the area of somatoformal disorders. It also reminds the clinicians to keep in mind rare neurological disorders as possible causes for psychiatric symptoms.

Betrayal trauma: relationship to physical health, psychological distress, and a written disclosure intervention.

In the current study we sought, first, to distinguish associations with health arising from types of trauma as indicated by betrayal trauma theory (Freyd, 1996, 2001), and, second, to investigate the impact of disclosing a trauma history in survey form and/or writing essays about betrayal traumas. We recruited 99 community adults reporting at least 12 months of chronic medical illness or pain, 80 of whom completed all four sessions of this six-month longitudinal intervention study. Participants were randomly assigned to write about betrayal traumas or neutral events, and they were randomly ass

Utility of the trauma symptom inventory for the assessment of post-traumatic stress symptoms in veterans with a history of psychological trauma and/or brain injury.

Correspondence of three core Trauma Symptom Inventory (TSI) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) scales (Intrusive Experiences, Defensive Avoidance, and Anxious Arousal) and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-IV) PTSD module were examined among 72 veterans with traumatic brain injury (TBI), PTSD, or both conditions. Subjects were classified into PTSD only, TBI only, or co-occurring PTSD and TBI groups based on TBI assessment and SCID-IV PTSD diagnosis. Linear regression was used to model TSI T-Scores as a function of group. Scores on all three scales significan

Navigating Trauma and Mental Health: The Role of Social Support, Psychological Resilience, and Psychological Sense of Community Among Urban Adolescents of Color.

BACKGROUND: Urban adolescents of color experience disproportionately high rates of trauma, depression, anxiety, and substance use. Yet, limited research has examined how protective factors-such as social support, psychological resilience, and psychological sense of community (SOC) or community connectedness-interact to influence these outcomes. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 2002 adolescents (ages 12-18) from two urban high schools in Northeastern New Jersey. Participants completed validated measures assessing trauma (Child Trauma Screen), depression (PHQ-9A), anxiety (G

Investigating the role of drama-based strategies in addressing psychological trauma: a systematic review.

Background: Drama-based techniques have been increasingly implemented with trauma-exposed populations. However, the evidence base remains conceptually and methodologically heterogeneous, with substantial variation in how trauma is defined, how interventions are described, and which trauma-related outcomes are assessed. Objective: This review aimed to synthesise empirical studies examining drama-based interventions for individuals exposed to trauma. The review describes the characteristics of drama-based interventions, the types of trauma addressed, the pattern and range of trauma-related psycho

The trauma of invisibility: Racial microaggressions and psychological distress among Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Racism in Canada systematically marginalizes Indigenous communities, with invisibility emerging as a central mechanism of discrimination. This study examines how racial trauma manifests among Indigenous individuals, focusing on microaggressions, ethnic discrimination, and psychological distress. Invisibility-through erasure of identity, culture, and historical injustices-was a recurring theme in Indigenous experiences of racism, reinforcing exclusion and increasing trauma. A total of 196 Indigenous participants (64% First Nations, 26% Métis, 6% Inuit) across Canada were recruited via an online

What Therapies are Favored in the Treatment of the Psychological Sequelae of Trauma in Human Trafficking Victims?

Human trafficking is a major public health concern that brings about deleterious psychological consequences and sequelae. Although a number of risk and protective factors for the health consequences of human trafficking victims have been identified, there is a dearth of information in the area of treatment. Specifically, we found no articles comparing the different components of prevailing trauma treatment strategies, and the potential usefulness of these strategies in the treatment of human trafficking victims. To this end, we compared and contrasted the different therapeutic treatments typic

The age of trauma: the prevalence and psychological impact of potentially traumatic exposures in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTE) is associated with a range of negative mental health outcomes, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (cPTSD). Although exposure to PTEs is highly prevalent, and their impact on mental health is pervasive, research is mostly limited to diagnosed populations or specific trauma cohorts in the post-pandemic era. METHODS: We conducted an online survey of 1,000 Seoul residents from October 6-12, 2023, using a stratified sampling method. Participants were asked about their traumatic experiences, mental health outco

Psychological trauma and post-traumatic growth in parents of children with sickle cell disease.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary blood condition characterized by abnormal hemoglobin, leading to chronic hemolysis and vaso-occlusive complications. Caregivers of children with SCD often experience significant distress, akin to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study aimed to measure the degree of trauma and post-traumatic growth among parents (caregivers) of children with SCD in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A total of 294 primary caregivers were recruited for this study, through direct phone calls and online outreach using contact information obtained from their primary tr

Psychological trauma as a transdiagnostic risk factor for mental disorder: an umbrella meta-analysis.

This umbrella review is the first to systematically examine psychological trauma as a transdiagnostic risk factor across psychiatric conditions. We searched Pubmed, Scopus, and PsycNET databases from inception until 01/05/2021 for systematic reviews/meta-analyses evaluating the association between psychological trauma and at least one diagnosed mental disorder. We re-calculated the odds ratio (OR), then classified the association as convincing, highly suggestive, suggestive, or weak, based on the number of cases and controls with and without psychological trauma, random-effects p value, the 95

Trajectories of Psychological Distress in Australians Living in Urban Poverty: The Impact of Interpersonal Trauma.

Childhood maltreatment and interpersonal trauma experience is an important factor underpinning the apparent perpetuation of the cycle of social disadvantage experienced by homeless adults. This paper aimed to examine longitudinal patterns of psychological distress in a sample of 1,504 socially disadvantaged adult participants from the Journeys Home Study in Australia. The current paper utilized the "conservation of resources" theory and the concept of "risk factor caravans" to investigate the nature and implications of childhood trauma in the context of homelessness. The effects of multiple interpersonal traumas on psychological maladjustment of sexually abused children in Korea.

The purpose of the present study was to explore the effects of multiple interpersonal traumas on psychiatric diagnosis and behavior problems of sexually abused children in Korea. With 495 children (ages 4-13 years) referred to a public counseling center for sexual abuse in Korea, we found significant differences in the rate of psychiatric diagnoses (r = .23) and severity of behavioral problems (internalizing d = 0.49, externalizing d = 0.40, total d = 0.52) between children who were victims of sexual abuse only (n = 362) and youth who were victims of interpersonal trauma experiences in additio

Comparison of scores for abused and nonabused young adults on the Psychological Trauma and Resources Scale.

The Psychological Trauma and Psychological Resources Scale has been developed to identify adolescents and adults who have experienced traumatic events, i.e., physical, sexual, or emotional abuse and neglect. The scale also attempts to identify the presence of compensatory or resource factors such as social support that may serve to ameliorate the effects of traumatic events. 98 college participants who reported a history of abuse were compared with 464 nonabused students on the seven subscales. As predicted, the abused participants reported significantly more incidents of abuse and neglect tha

Associations between psychological distress symptoms and cognitive function among trauma-exposed women: Moderating role of the developmental period of trauma exposure.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related internalizing symptoms, including anxiety and depression, are associated with emotional-cognitive alterations. These alterations, such as biased attentional processing and reduced emotional inhibition, are thought to contribute to persistent distress. However, these associations may vary across individuals. Developmental neuroscience suggests that the timing of trauma exposure (childhood, adolescence, adulthood) can differentially influence brain development and emotional processing. This study examined whether the developmental period of first

Who counts as 'us'? Latent profiles of moral inclusiveness, trauma history, and psychological wellbeing.

Moral inclusiveness-the scope of one's moral circle-has traditionally been studied as a single, global trait. This study instead applied latent profile analysis (LPA) to uncover nuanced moral inclusiveness profiles spanning nested layers of relational proximity (family, community, global citizen, and nonhuman living beings). The study looked across four validated scales-Kindness, Compassion, Global-Mindedness, and Speciesism-and further examined how these profiles relate to trauma, mental health, and spirituality. A cross-sectional sample of 763 U.S. participants completed measures assessing m
