Improving nurses' alarm-management performance with a behavioral reminder.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether adding a behavioral reminder to the CEASE Bundle improves alarm-management performance and reduces alarm fatigue among intensive care nurses. METHOD: A controlled quasi-experimental pretest-posttest study was conducted with 115 nurses from adult intensive care units. Sixty-two nurses participated in the intervention group and 53 in the control group. Data were obtained with the Nurse Identification Form, CEASE Bundle, Alarm Type and Management Form, "Remind Me" Monitor Alarm Control Tool, and Alarm Fatigue Scale. CEASE provided the basis for observation and eva

A visual reminder chart to improve tuberculosis treatment adherence and self-management in a low-resource setting.

BACKGROUND: Treatment adherence in tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health challenge, particularly in low-resource settings where limited health literacy contributes to poor outcomes. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a low-cost, visual reminder tool (the TB-Minder Chart) to improve patient adherence and self-management. METHODS: A single-arm pre-post intervention was conducted with 39 adult pulmonary TB patients attending a regional clinic. Participants used the TB-Minder Chart daily for 2 months to record medication intake and reflect on treatment experiences. Adherenc

SEARCH Study: Text Messages and Automated Phone Reminders for HPV Vaccination in Uganda: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is currently the leading female cancer in Uganda. Most women are diagnosed with late-stage disease. Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is the single most important primary preventive measure. While research regarding text message vaccine reminder use is strong in the United States, their use has not yet been demonstrated in a preteen and adolescent population in subSaharan Africa or other low- and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this pilot randomized controlled trial was to assess the impact of vaccine reminders with embedded interactive ed

Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Reminder Emails, Program Use, and Prescribing: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) can contribute to safer prescribing of opioids and other controlled substances but are often underutilized by prescribers. Evidence on the feasibility and effects of email campaigns to increase clinicians' engagement with PDMP is limited. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether email communications can increase PDMP use and, in turn, reduce guideline-discordant prescribing among clinicians. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This randomized clinical trial included clinicians who prescribed controlled substances but lacked PDMP accounts, had

Randomised pilot study comparing a coach to SMARTPhone reminders to aid the management of heart failure (HF) patients: humans or machines.

Ambulatory management of congestive heart failure (HF) continues to be a challenging clinical problem. Recent studies have focused on the role of HF clinics, nurse practitioners and disease management programmes to reduce HF readmissions. This pilot study is a pragmatic factorial study comparing a coach intervention, a SMARTPHONE REMINDER system intervention and BOTH interventions combined to Treatment as USUAL (TAU). We determined that both modalities were acceptable to patients prior to randomisation. Fifty-four patients were randomised to the four groups. The COACH group had no readmissions

The AuTOMATIC trial: a study protocol for a multi-arm Bayesian adaptive randomised controlled trial of text messaging to improve childhood immunisation coverage.

BACKGROUND: While most Australian children are vaccinated, delays in vaccination can put them at risk from preventable infections. Widespread mobile phone ownership in Australia could allow automated short message service (SMS) reminders to be used as a low-cost strategy to effectively 'nudge' parents towards vaccinating their children on time. METHODS: AuTOMATIC is an adaptive randomised trial which aims to both evaluate and optimise the use of SMS reminders for improving the timely vaccination of children at primary care clinics across Australia. The trial will utilise high levels of digita

Automated Text Message-Enhanced Monitoring Versus Routine Monitoring in Early Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Randomized Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Frequent monitoring of patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is required for achieving good outcomes. This study was undertaken to investigate the influence of text message (SMS)-enhanced monitoring on early RA outcomes. METHODS: We randomized 166 patients with early, disease-modifying antirheumatic drug-naive RA to receive SMS-enhanced follow-up or routine care. All patients attended visits at 0, 3, and 6 months, and a follow-up visit at 12 months. Treatment was at the physicians' discretion. The intervention included 13 SMSs during weeks 0-24 with questions concerning med

Interventions to improve adherence to lipid-lowering medication.

BACKGROUND: Lipid-lowering drugs are widely underused, despite strong evidence indicating they improve cardiovascular end points. Poor patient adherence to a medication regimen can affect the success of lipid-lowering treatment. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interventions aimed at improving adherence to lipid-lowering drugs, focusing on measures of adherence and clinical outcomes. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO and CINAHL up to 3 February 2016, and clinical trials registers (ANZCTR and ClinicalTrials.

Text message reminders for timely routine MMR vaccination: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination is important for preventing disease outbreaks, yet pockets of under-vaccination persist. Text message reminders have been employed successfully for other pediatric vaccines, but studies examining their use for MMR vaccination are limited. This study assessed the impact of text message reminders on timely MMR vaccination. STUDY DESIGN: Parents (n=2054) of 9.5-10.5-month-old children from four urban academically-affiliated pediatric clinics were randomized to scheduling plus appointment text message reminders, appointment text message reminder-

Medication noncompliance and its implications in transplant recipients.

The transplant patient's therapeutic regimen consists of a lifelong drug therapy, including immunosuppressive drugs, prophylactic antimicrobials and often medications for the treatment of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and other comorbid diseases. Regular clinic appointments are required to monitor for signs and symptoms of immunological injury, recurrent disease and adverse drug effects. Patients are instructed to avoid risk factors for cardiovascular disease and cancer (e.g. diet, exercise, sun protection and not smoking). Noncompliance with all aspects of this regimen is substantial. Medic

The challenge of embracing a smoke-free lifestyle: a neglected area in smoking cessation programs.

Relapse prevention theory and practice has focussed on teaching coping skills to deal with withdrawal and temptations to relapse with the result that treatments appear to be effective in reducing relapse over the short term, but not over the longer term. Once cravings subside ex-smokers face a further task of adjusting to a smoke-free lifestyle that involves learning to think and act like a non-smoker. To highlight this task, we operationalized a new conceptual framework that describes three tasks of quitting (the 3Ts): (i) making a quit attempt; (ii) learning to effectively deal with cravings

A virtual clinic improves pneumococcal vaccination coverage among patients living with HIV at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

People living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) should receive pneumococcal vaccinations as part of their routine health maintenance. Our goal was to create a "virtual clinic" to help increase rates of pneumococcal vaccination among people living with HIV without adding substantially to the workload of primary providers. We used administrative data from our Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center to identify a cohort of veterans living with HIV who were not current with either the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13), the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23

The cloud-based integrated intelligent management system for childhood asthma affects the control level and quality of life of children with asthma.

OBJECTIVE: Bronchial asthma in children is a prevalent chronic condition that adversely affects respiratory health, leading to significant healthcare costs and diminished quality of life. Current management strategies, primarily involving inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators, are often hindered by poor adherence and inadequate monitoring. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an intelligent management system compared to traditional methods in enhancing asthma management in pediatric patients. METHODS: Utilizing a randomized controlled trial design with a 12-month follow-up,

Support Strategies to Enhance Adherence to a Prescription Digital Therapeutic for Erectile Dysfunction: Retrospective Quasi-Experimental Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Sustained engagement is a central challenge for digital therapeutics. In routine operations, inactivity-triggered supports (eg, SMS reminders and telephone follow-up) are used to nudge patients back after lapses, but evidence in digital erectile dysfunction (ED) therapy is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate whether low-threshold support in the form of SMS reminders and structured telephone outreach, both triggered after 7 or more days of inactivity, improves engagement and patient-centered outcomes in a certified German digital health application (Digitale Gesundheits

Mixed Delivery Mode Reminder Strategy to Tackle Low Participation in an e-Cohort: Randomized Controlled Trial Nested Within the Le French Gut e-Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Typically, e-cohorts are susceptible to low participation rates, undermining representativeness. Frequent reminders can be a cost-effective strategy to increase response rates. However, their effectiveness may vary depending on the delivery mode and message content. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate different reminder strategies (ie, emails and/or text messages with standard and/or institutional wording) and compare their effectiveness in increasing the response rate in a population-based e-cohort of healthy adults. METHODS: We conducted a 4-arm parallel randomized controll

Improving uptake of lung cancer screening: an observational study on the impact of timed appointments and reminders.

Lung cancer screening (LCS) reduces lung cancer-related mortality; however, uptake remains low compared with other cancer screening programmes. In this observational study, we report the impact of timed appointments and reminders on participation in our regional LCS programme.Initial uptake of timed appointments was 53.0% (n=17 274/32 593), higher than previously reported in the UK, while initial uptake of open invitations was 29.8% (n=10 246/34 371). Among initial non-responders, 17.5% (n=4263/24 400) completed triage following a reminder. The increased participation following reminders only

Using mHealth to improve adherence and reduce blood pressure in individuals with hypertension and bipolar disorder (iTAB-CV): study protocol for a 2-stage randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease in individuals with mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder is highly prevalent and often poorly managed. Individuals with bipolar disorder face significant medication adherence barriers, especially when they are prescribed multiple medications for other health conditions including hypertension. Poor adherence puts them at a disproportionate risk for poor health outcomes. As such, there is a need for effective interventions to improve hypertension medication adherence, particularly in patients that struggle with adherence due to mental health comorb
