Characteristics of lipids imbalance in patients with tick-borne encephalitis.

Using a novel approach, we have analyzed 30 parameters characterizing detailed spectrum and fractional content of LPs in plasma of patients with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). The blood plasma of all TBE patients (30 patients), as compared with that of healthy individuals (120 patients), is characterized by decreased concentrations of many LP subfractions and of the total concentration of all plasma LPs (hypolipoproteinemia). The observed difference in some parameters was statistically significant. Using computer-assisted factor analysis, we have shown that according to these 30 parameters TBE

Determining the molar mass of a plasma substitute succinylated gelatin by size exclusion chromatography-multi-angle laser light scattering, sedimentation equilibrium and conventional size exclusion chromatography.

The clinical effectiveness of succinylated gelatin as a plasma substitute depends strongly on its molar mass, determined conventionally by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). This study evaluates different SEC calibration standards in comparison with two independent "absolute" methods for determining the weight average molar mass (M(w)) of a succinylated gelatin sample. SEC calibrated using succinylated gelatin fractions correlated well with size exclusion chromatography-multi-angle laser light scattering (SEC-MALLS) and sedimentation equilibrium whereas SEC calibrated with unmodified gelatin

Single nucleon emission in relativistic nucleus-nucleus reactions.

Significant discrepancies between theory and experiment have previously been noted for nucleon emission via electromagnetic processes in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. The present work investigates the hypothesis that these discrepancies have arisen due to uncertainties about how to deduce the experimental electromagnetic cross section from the total measured cross section. An optical-model calculation of single neutron removal is added to electromagnetic cross sections and compared to the total experimental cross sections. Good agreement is found thereby resolving some of the earlie

[Monte Carlo Simulation Analysis of Beam Hardening and Iodine Contrast CT Values: Effects of Body Size and Tube Voltage].

PURPOSE: The quantitative accuracy of computed tomography (CT) values in contrast-enhanced CT is affected by tube voltage, body size, and scattered radiation. This study aimed to analyze the influence of these factors on CT values using Monte Carlo simulation and to clarify the usefulness of tube voltage optimization considering body size. METHODS: The Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System was used to analyze transmitted X-ray spectra at 80-140 kV in water phantoms (16-32 cm in diameter) containing contrast medium. Sinograms were generated under conditions that included both primary an

Radiation Exposure to the Brains of Interventional Radiology Staff: A Phantom Study.

Numerous papers report the occurrence of head and neck tumors in interventional radiology (IR) physicians. Recently, appropriate dosimetry and protection have become much more important. To accomplish these, first, we should accurately understand how the brain is exposed. We assessed the dose distribution of the head and clarified the relationship between head exposure and brain dose. We used eight radiophotoluminescence dosimeters (RPLDs), two at the surface of the eyes and six inside the phantom head. We conducted measurements with three kinds of irradiation fields: one irradiated the whole

Implication for photosensitive patients of ultraviolet A exposure in vehicles.

BACKGROUND: Photosensitive patients sometimes report disease flares during journeys by car. Window glass blocks all UVB but not all UVA. All car windscreens are made from laminated glass. Side and rear windows are usually made of nonlaminated glass. OBJECTIVES: To determine which types of glass provide most protection from UVA with particular reference to the implications for patients with polymorphic light eruption (PLE). METHODS: The percentage transmission of UVA was determined for a selection of glass, both laminated and nonlaminated, and with differing colour tints. RESULTS: Laminated

A comparison of out-of-field dose and its constituent components for intensity-modulated radiation therapy versus conformal radiation therapy: implications for carcinogenesis.

PURPOSE: To investigate differences in scatter and leakage between 6-MV intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT); to describe the relative contributions of internal patient scatter, collimator scatter, and head leakage; and to discuss implications for second cancer induction. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Dose was measured at increasing distances from the field edge in a water bath with a sloping wall (1) under full scatter conditions, (2) with the field edge abutting but outside the bath to prevent internal (water) scatter, and (3) with

Estimating radiation exposure during paediatric cardiac catheterisation: a potential for radiation reduction with air gap technique.

INTRODUCTION: The air gap technique (AGT) is an approach to radiation dose optimisation during fluoroscopy where an "air gap" is used in place of an anti-scatter grid to reduce scatter irradiation. The AGT is effective in adults but remains largely untested in children. Effects are expected to vary depending on patient size and the amount of scatter irradiation produced. METHODS: Fluoroscopy and cineangiography were performed using a Phillips Allura Fluoroscope on tissue simulation anthropomorphic phantoms representing a neonate, 5-year-old, and teenager. Monte Carlo simulations were then use

Artifacts in fluoroscopy and changes in radiation dose caused by heating blankets and insulating covers during simulated endovascular treatment.

PURPOSE: We aimed to assess whether insulating covers and warming systems cause artifacts in fluoroscopy, and whether they alter the radiation dose. METHODS: Eight insulating and warming systems were wrapped around the phantom in order to obtain images in fluoroscopy, and to measure the absorbed and scattered radiation dose. A dosimeter, endovascular catheters, and stents were placed into a phantom. The other dosimeter was placed outside of a C-arm table, at the operator's and anesthesiologist's locations. RESULTS: Most of the insulating covers did not cause artifacts in the fluoroscopy and

Building protection- and building shielding-factors for environmental exposure to radionuclides and monoenergetic photon emissions.

We describe a simplified method for calculating both building protection- and shielding-factors for generic one- and two-story housing-unit models that are source-term dependent. Typically, radionuclide-independent factors are applied generically to external dose coefficients to account for the radiation shielding effects of indoor residences. In reality, the shielding effectiveness of each housing-unit would change over time as the radionuclide mixture and gamma-ray energy spectrum change due to physical effects such as deposition, radioactive decay, weathering effects, and decontamination ef

3D wrist imaging - Is it time for superman to retire?

OBJECTIVES: Computed tomography (CT) of the wrist may be challenged, due to patients' inability to extend the arm for a "Superman pose" resulting in increased radiation dose due to scatter. Alternative positions and less dose administering modalities such as 3D Cone-beam CT (CBCT) and single-shot CT could be considered. This phantom study aimed to estimate scatter radiation dose in different phantom positions using helical and single-shot CT and 3D CBCT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Wireless electronic dosimeters attached to the head and chest of an anthropomorphic phantom in various clinically rele

Estimating global agricultural effects of geoengineering using volcanic eruptions.

Solar radiation management is increasingly considered to be an option for managing global temperatures1,2, yet the economic effects of ameliorating climatic changes by scattering sunlight back to space remain largely unknown3. Although solar radiation management may increase crop yields by reducing heat stress4, the effects of concomitant changes in available sunlight have never been empirically estimated. Here we use the volcanic eruptions that inspired modern solar radiation management proposals as natural experiments to provide the first estimates, to our knowledge, of how the stratospheric

Structure of tendon causes highly optical anisotropic properties and transport.

SIGNIFICANCE: Tendons are highly anisotropic tissues that exhibit distinct optical properties depending on the direction of light propagation relative to their fiber orientation. Understanding these variations and how to modify them through optical clearing techniques is beneficial for many light-based applications, including photobiomodulation therapy. AIM: To quantify how tendon optical transport depends on fiber orientation and wavelength, comparing light propagation parallel and perpendicular to the tendon's long axis, the axis along which collagen fibers are primarily aligned, and to eva

Fast and compact scatterometer for ex vivo qualification of low-scattering biological samples.

We present the design, calibration, qualification, and application of a fast and compact scatterometer designed for the characterization of ex vivo human corneas. As an alternative to standard qualification processes and in order to meet the current need for improved reliability of graft qualification, this instrument provides a non-invasive, label-free, and contact-free quantitative means of characterizing corneal grafts, based on back-scattered light diffusometry. The instrument is shown to be capable of detecting BRDF (bidirectional reflectance distribution function) variations of 1.4 × 10-

Spectroscopic quantification of cyclopentolate using an erythrosine-based resonance rayleigh scattering strategy: application to ophthalmic formulations.

Cyclopentolate (CYP), an antimuscarinic (anticholinergic) agent, is pharmacologically employed in ophthalmology to induce cycloplegia (temporary paralysis of the ciliary muscle) and mydriasis (pupil dilation) for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including ocular examinations and surgeries. This study establishes a spectrofluorimetric method for quantifying CYP in ophthalmic solutions based on Resonance Rayleigh Scattering (RRS) signal modulation. The approach exploits the formation of an ion-associate complex between CYP and the dye erythrosine, which induces a measurable RRS enhancement

Vision With Retrodots and Factors for Declining Visual Function.

PURPOSE: We investigated decline in the visual function of eyes with retrodots (RDs)-a subtype of cataract. METHOD: This study included 57 eyes with RD opacity only (mean age 72.3 ± 5.2 years) and 34 eyes with transparent lenses (mean age 71.4 ± 3.7 years). A physician diagnosed lens opacity. Using the Kanazawa Medical University Classification and Grading System, the eyes were classified into the RD-1 (37 eyes, RDs <25% of the 3-mm pupil area) and RD-2 (20 eyes, RDs ≥25% of the 3-mm pupil area) groups. Corrected distance visual acuity, contrast visual acuity, ocular refractive power, lens po

A resonance Rayleigh scattering method for sensitive detection of chitosan based on supramolecular complex and mechanism study.

A convenient and sensitive resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) method for the detection of chitosan (CTS) has been developed via forming Cu-Zn supramolecular complex by complexation reaction, hydrophobic force and electrostatic attraction. The microstructure of the complex was characterized by FT-IR, zeta potential, scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV-vis and RRS. Furthermore, the interaction mechanism among Cu(II), Zn(II), CTS and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) was studied. The results revealed that CTS and Cu(II) or Zn(II) formed a supramolecular complex with RRS enhancement in w

Dendritic optical antennas: scattering properties and fluorescence enhancement.

With the development of nanotechnologies, researchers have brought the concept of antenna to the optical regime for manipulation of nano-scaled light matter interactions. Most optical nanoantennas optimize optical function, but are not electrically connected. In order to realize functions that require electrical addressing, optical nanoantennas that are electrically continuous are desirable. In this article, we study the optical response of a type of electrically connected nanoantennas, which we propose to call "dendritic" antennas. While they are connected, they follow similar antenna hybridi

Superconductivity in highly disordered dense carbon disulfide.

High pressure plays an increasingly important role in both understanding superconductivity and the development of new superconducting materials. New superconductors were found in metallic and metal oxide systems at high pressure. However, because of the filled close-shell configuration, the superconductivity in molecular systems has been limited to charge-transferred salts and metal-doped carbon species with relatively low superconducting transition temperatures. Here, we report the low-temperature superconducting phase observed in diamagnetic carbon disulfide under high pressure. The supercon
