The ability of captive spider monkeys, Ateles geoffroyi, to visually discriminate between different sizes of food and of non-edible objects.

Field studies suggest that the size of potential food items plays an important role in the food selection behavior of nonhuman primates. However, there is only limited knowledge about how good primates are at visually discriminating between the size of three-dimensional objects of the same kind and shape. We therefore conducted two experiments on ten adult spider monkeys: a two-choice test based on spontaneous preferences with differently-sized pieces of food of the same kind and shape, and a two-choice test based on an operant conditioning procedure in which the animals were trained to choose

Clients' and workers' perceptions on clients' functional ability and need for help: home care in municipalities.

The aim of the study was to compare clients' and named home care (HC) workers' perceptions of clients' functional ability (FA) and need for help and to analyse which client- and municipality-related factors are associated with perceptions of client's FA. The total of 686 Finnish HC clients was interviewed in 2001. Further, the questionnaire was sent to 686 HC workers. FA was assessed by activities of daily living (ADL), which included both basic/physical (PADL) and instrumental (IADL) activities. The association between client's FA and municipality-related variables was analysed by using hiera

The extent of skin bending rather than action possibilities explains why holes feel larger with the tongue than with the finger.

When small holes are felt with the tongue, they are perceived to be larger compared with when felt with the index finger. This oral illusion has not yet been consistently explained. From present action-specific accounts of perception, we derived a high-level sticking-action hypothesis to explain the oral illusion. In 5 experiments, we contrasted this hypothesis' predictions with predictions from the low-level bending hypothesis, which states that felt hole size decreases with decreasing bending of the skin at the hole's edges. Results from Experiments 1 to 3 showed that felt hole size decrease

Adaptive Grid Search Method Using Dynamic Step-Size Adjustment for Robot-Tissue Interaction Force Estimation.

BACKGROUND: Reliable force perception is critical in robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery. However, constraints in end-effector size and complexity of the surgical environment hamper the integration of force sensors for direct feedback. METHODS: In this study, an adaptive grid search algorithm with dynamic step-size adjustment is proposed to optimise the Hunt-Crossley (HC) model parameters for precise force estimation in robotic applications. The method continuously adjusts the step size based on real-time estimation error, thereby enabling efficient investigation of the parameter space

The size-brightness correspondence: evidence for crosstalk among aligned conceptual feature dimensions.

The same core set of cross-sensory correspondences connecting stimulus features across different sensory channels are observed, regardless of the modality of the stimulus with which the correspondences are probed. This observation suggests that correspondences involve modality-independent representations of aligned conceptual feature dimensions and predicts a size-brightness correspondence in which smaller is aligned with brighter. This suggestion accommodates cross-sensory congruity effects where contrasting feature values are specified verbally rather than perceptually (e.g., where the words

Model for perception of pulsed fluoroscopy image sequences.

Pulsed fluoroscopy at reduced frame rates can be used to lower x-ray dose with equivalent detection (hereafter called equivalent perception) of low-contrast, stationary objects. Experimentally average dose savings of 22%, 38%, and 49%, for pulsed fluoroscopy at 15, 10, and 7.5 acquisitions per second, respectively, are documented. Dose savings depend on object size, with fewer savings for smaller objects. To explain these data, we extend the framework of an ideal observer with three models for the spatiotemporal response of the human visual system (HVS). They are model 1, separable; model 2, n

S+ versus S- fading in teaching visual discriminations to severely mentally handicapped children.

Twenty-seven severely mentally handicapped children in three matched groups were trained on both a complex and a simple visual discrimination task with: (1) prompt fading on S+; (2) prompt fading on S-; or (3) no prompting (trial-and-error training). On the complex discrimination task, differences between groups were obscured by a floor effect. Only one subject from each group acquired the discrimination. However, on the simple discrimination task all nine S+ fading, eight S- fading and six trial-and-error training subjects attained criterion. Both S+ and S- fading groups made significantly fe

Task-irrelevant semantic grouping influences attentional allocation.

High-level features of objects, such as meaning, bias attention even when task-irrelevant. We hypothesize that task-irrelevant semantic features bias attention via a grouping mechanism, organizing visual input by semantic relatedness in a manner similar to low-level grouping. Specifically, when presented with a task-irrelevant visual array of items, visual search is more efficient within a group of semantically related items. Participants were shown four stimuli of either color squares (low-level grouping), grayscale real-world objects (high-level grouping), or color real-world objects (low- a

Rhythmic beta-frequency TMS over human right parietal cortex strengthens visual size illusions.

Rhythmic brain activity has been proposed to structure visual processing. Here we investigated the causal contributions of parietal beta oscillations to context-dependent visual size perception, which is indicated by the classic Ebbinghaus and Ponzo illusions. On each trial, rhythmic transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied over the left or right superior parietal lobule in a train of five pulses at beta frequency (20 Hz). Immediately after the last pulse of the stimulation train, participants were presented with the illusory configuration, and performed a size-matching task. The re

Body size overestimation in anorexia nervosa: Contributions of cognitive, affective, tactile and visual information.

Body image disturbance (BID) in anorexia nervosa (AN) is poorly understood and the individual contribution of perceptual, cognitive, and affective components remains unclear. This study compared females with AN and matched healthy controls (HC) on a perceptual size estimation task. Participants (AN n=19 M[SD] age=16.97[2.24], HC n=19, age=15.77[2.17]) were blindfolded and estimated the size of neutral objects, safe foods, unsafe foods, and parts of their bodies (hips, waist, knees, ankle) over three blocks using: 1) no sensory information (baseline), 2) tactile information, and 3) added visual

Dyslexic children fail to comply with the rhythmic constraints of handwriting.

In this study, we sought to demonstrate that deficits in a specific motor activity, handwriting, are associated to Developmental Dyslexia. The linguistic and writing performance of children with Developmental Dyslexia, with and without handwriting problems (dysgraphia), were compared to that of children with Typical Development. The quantitative kinematic variables of handwriting were collected by means of a digitizing tablet. The results showed that all children with Developmental Dyslexia wrote more slowly than those with Typical Development. Contrary to typically developing children, they a

Facial markings in the social cuckoo wasp Polistes sulcifer: No support for the visual deception and the assessment hypotheses.

Insect social parasites have to conquer a host colony by overcoming its defensive barriers. In addition to increased fighting abilities, many social parasites evolved sophisticated sensory deception mechanisms to elude host colonies defenses by exploiting host communication channels. Recently, it has been shown that the conspicuous facial markings of a paper wasp social parasite, Polistes sulcifer, decrease the aggressiveness of host foundresses. Two main hypotheses stand as explanations of this phenomenon: visual sensory deception (i.e. the black patterning reduces host aggression by exploiti

Figure-ground separation during active electrolocation in the weakly electric fish, Gnathonemus petersii.

The weakly electric fish Gnathonemus petersii uses active electrolocation to detect and discriminate between objects in its environment. Objects are recognised by analysing the electric images, which they project onto the fish's skin. In this study, we determined whether different types of large backgrounds interfere with the fishes' ability to discriminate between objects. Fish were trained in a food-rewarded two-alternative forced-choice procedure to discriminate between two objects. In subsequent tests, structured and non-structured as well as stationary and moving backgrounds were position

The roles of altitude and fear in the perception of height.

Previous research on perceiving spatial layout has found that people often exhibit normative biases in their perception of the environment. For instance, slant is typically overestimated and distance is usually underestimated. Surprisingly, however, the perception of height has rarely been studied. The present experiments examined the perception of height when viewed from the top (e.g., looking down) or from the bottom (e.g., looking up). Multiple measures were adapted from previous studies of horizontal extents to assess the perception of height. Across all of the measures, a large, consisten

Tactile adaptation transfers between distance and continuous size.

Tactile spatial perceived distance between two touches is larger on sensitive skin regions. While such distortions are substantial for the perception of distance between two distinct touches, they are significantly reduced when participants estimate the size of a single continuous object touching the skin. Here, we examine whether some of the mechanisms involved in processing the distance between two touches are shared with and influence those underlying the perception of continuous objects, leveraging adaptation aftereffects. In experiment 1, participants adapted to specific distances between

The impact of visual illusions on perception, action planning, and motor performance.

The present study extended recent research revealing that illusions can influence performance in golf putting (Witt, Linkenauger, & Proffitt Psychological Science, 23, 397-399, 2012), by exploring the potential mediating roles of attention and action planning. Glover and Dixon's (Journal of Experimental Psychology. Human Perception and Performance, 27, 560-572, 2001) planning-control model suggests that both perceptual and movement-planning processes are prone to illusion-based bias. We therefore predicted that both the perception of target size and a measure of attentional control related to

The length of a piece of string: Where the whole is more than the sum of its constituent parts.

Determination of the magnitude or size of objects is crucial in many activities of daily living. Here we provide psychophysical evidence across multiple experiments that judgements for accumulated length of fragmented lines are non-veridical, with a larger number of fragments leading to a larger reduction in perceived size. The reported reduction in the size of fragmented stimuli is not a result of stimulus bias or frequency of observations and reflects an inherent perceptual bias. We have extended the findings to real objects in laboratory conditions. Whilst the discrimination threshold for t

Effect of different font sizes and of spaces between words on eye movement performance: An eye tracker study in dyslexic and non-dyslexic children.

The aim of the present study was to explore the possible change in eye movement performance in a group of dyslexic and non-dyslexic children reading four lines of a text with different font sizes and spaces between the words. Fifteen dyslexic children from 7 to 12 years old and two groups of fifteen non-dyslexic children, respectively reading and chronological age-matched group, participated in this study. Horizontal eye movements from both eyes were recorded by a video-system (EyeBrain T2®) while the children were reading a text. Three different texts were used with different font sizes and s

The Development of Size Sequencing Skills: An Empirical and Computational Analysis.

We explore a long-observed phenomenon in children's cognitive development known as size seriation. It is not until children are around 7 years of age that they spontaneously use a strict ascending or descending order of magnitude to organize sets of objects differing in size. Incomplete and inaccurate ordering shown by younger children has been thought to be related to their incomplete grasp of the mathematical concept of a unit. Piaget first brought attention to children's difficulties in solving ordering and size-matching tests, but his tasks and explanations have been progressively neglecte
