OBJECTIVE: To determine whether hot flashes produce sleep disturbance in postmenopausal women.
DESIGN: This study was performed in a university medical center laboratory with 18 postmenopausal women with hot flashes, six with no hot flashes, and 12 cycling women, all healthy and medication free. Polysomnography, skin and rectal temperatures, and skin conductance to detect hot flashes were recorded for four nights. Nights 2, 3, and 4 were run at 30 degrees C, 23 degrees C, and 18 degrees C in randomized order.
RESULTS: During the first half of the night, the women with hot flashes had signifi

BACKGROUND: Quantitative thresholds for REM sleep without atonia (RWA) vary across populations, and their relationships with neuroimaging markers of Lewy body disease remain incompletely understood.
OBJECTIVES: To examine whether previously proposed RWA thresholds for Japanese patients are associated with cardiac sympathetic and striatal dopaminergic imaging markers.
METHODS: This multicenter study included 91 Japanese patients with probable RBD (isolated or PD-associated). Assessments included the RBD Questionnaire-Japanese version (RBDQ-JP), video-PSG, cardiac 123I-MIBG scintigraphy, and D

UNLABELLED: Sleep terrors are a non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep-related parasomnia characterized by abrupt terror with a frightening scream. However, it remains unknown whether sleep terrors occur only from NREM sleep. We evaluated 3 cases of a sleep terrors-like parasomnia that occurred exclusively during arousals from rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. These parasomnia events occurred at REM sleep-wake transitions, manifesting with screaming or crying, similar to sleep terrors, without alertness or clear orientation. The patients were all young-adult females without notable medical conditio

Neuropsychological investigations of patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) have shown impairments in such basic functions as memory, attention and executive control. Since executive functions are known to be dependent on the integrity of the frontal lobe, it was hypothesized that OSAS may be associated with hypoxaemic frontal lobe dysfunction. To test this hypothesis, 21 apnoeic patients and 10 normal controls were studied with quantitative electroencephalographic (EEG) methods during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, when most apnoeic events occur and during wakefulness. In apn

Sleep remains a complex and only partially understood neurophysiological process, with current theories often fragmented across electrophysiological, metabolic, and phenomenological domains. In this paper, we propose an advanced and integrative framework that conceptualizes rapid eye movement (REM) sleep as a state in which the brain constructs a provisional dummy model of the external world. In this context, non-REM (NREM) sleep serves as a critical phase of synaptic and network reorganization, coupled with glymphatic clearance, during which neural circuits undergo structural updates in respo

INTRODUCTION: It is known that periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS) impact various sleep parameters. Utilizing polysomnographic (PSG) data from a large set of retrospective records, we aimed to identify and describe differences in sleep efficiency comparing PLMS occurring in both rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM) sleep with PLMS occurring only in NREM sleep.
METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of consecutive full-night PSGs performed on adults (≥18) presenting for the clinical evaluation of insomnia, snoring, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), PLMS, rapid eye movement (R

Vivid dreams mostly occur during a phase of sleep called REM 1-5 . During REM sleep, the brain's internal representation of direction keeps shifting like that of an awake animal moving through its environment 6-8 . What causes these shifts, given the immobility of the sleeping animal? Here we show that the superior colliculus of the mouse, a motor command center involved in orienting movements 9-15 , issues motor commands during REM sleep, e.g. turn left, that are similar to those issued in the awake behaving animal. Strikingly, these motor commands, despite not being executed, shift the inter

There is a long-standing assumption that low noradrenergic activity during sleep reflects mainly the low arousal during this brain state. Nevertheless, recent research has demonstrated that the locus coeruleus, which is the main source of cortical noradrenaline, displays discrete periods of intense firing during non-REM sleep, without any signs of awakening. This transient locus coeruleus activation during sleep seems to occur in response to preceding learning-related episodes. In the present study, we manipulate noradrenergic activity during sleep in humans with either the α2-autoreceptor ago

A 15-year-old girl had no REM sleep presumably due to a pontine cavernous hemangioma was reported. Her brain MRI revealed a cavernous hemangioma extending from the dorsal pontine to the medulla. She manifested truncal ataxia, facial nerve palsy, and ocular motor apraxia. She could not sleep in the supine position due to the sleep apnea accompanied with loud snoring. Overnight polysomnography (PSG) was performed for detection of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). In addition to severe OSAS and Cheyne-Stokes-like respiration at wake after sleep onset, her 1st PSG study revealed no periods

Effects of deprivation of REM sleep on spontaneous occurring spike wave complexes in the WAG/Rij rat strain were studied by means of the pendulum and platform technique. During the deprivation period, which lasted three days, variable results were obtained. While a suppression of the total duration of epileptic activity was found for the pendulum deprived animals, no such evident effect was detected in the platform deprived rats. Probably, instrumental effects are responsible for these differential results. On the other hand, subsequent to deprivation, a prolonged reduction of the total durati

BACKGROUND: Daytime sleepiness is common in patients with sleep-disordered breathing. Although respiratory events during sleep are associated with the occurrence of daytime sleepiness, the differential impact of these events during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep on daytime sleepiness has not been well characterized.
STUDY OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of respiratory events during REM sleep and NREM sleep on daytime sleepiness, as assessed by the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT).
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: University-based sleep disorder

The preoptic area of the hypothalamus is key for the control of sleep onset and sleep homeostasis. Although traditionally considered exclusively somnogenic, recent studies identified a group of preoptic glutamatergic neurons that promote wakefulness. Specifically, our previous investigations demonstrated that chemogenetic stimulation of glutamatergic neurons within the medial-lateral preoptic area (MLPO_VGLUT2) promotes wakefulness, fragments non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMs), and suppresses REM sleep (REMs). This evidence is further supported by recent work showing that preoptic glutamater

Research suggests sleep plays a role in the consolidation of recently acquired memories for long-term storage. rapid eye movement (REM) sleep has been shown to play a complex role in emotional-memory processing, and may be involved in subsequent waking-day emotional reactivity and amygdala responsivity. Interaction of the hippocampus and basolateral amygdala with the medial-prefrontal cortex is associated with sleep-dependent learning and emotional memory processing. REM is also implicated in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is characterized by sleep disturbance, heightened reactiv

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is frequently seen in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. It can also be seen in brainstem lesions involving the pons. However, RBD in patients with a pure pontine infarction has been rarely reported. A 68-year-old man had a two-month history of violent behavior during sleep. His nocturnal behavior was screaming, thrashing of arms, punching or kicking his spouse, and falling out of bed associated with nightmares of being attacked by what he described as, "terrible animals frightening me." No remarkable neurological signs were found.

REM or dreaming sleep is one of three states of consciousness. It is characterized by rapid eye movements, muscle atonia, desynchronized EEG, and autonomic dysregulation. A dysfunction of one of these four cardinal traits explains the primary disorders of REM sleep, including REM sleep behavior disorder and narcolepsy. Although seen in other stages, sleep apnea syndrome, coronary syndromes, and stroke are strongly triggered by the autonomic dysregulation of REM sleep. REM sleep has an antiepileptic effect, which has not yet been used in clinical practice. It favors procedural memory, but not d

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep consists of a dreaming state in which there is activation of the cortical and hippocampal electroencephalogram (EEG), rapid eye movements, and loss of muscle tone. Although REM sleep was discovered more than 50 years ago, the neuronal circuits responsible for switching between REM and non-REM (NREM) sleep remain poorly understood. Here we propose a brainstem flip-flop switch, consisting of mutually inhibitory REM-off and REM-on areas in the mesopontine tegmentum. Each side contains GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid)-ergic neurons that heavily innervate the other. The

PURPOSE: To describe an association of Tourette's syndrome with rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) in a prepubescent boy.
METHODS: A four year longitudinal single-case study.
RESULTS: The co-existence of Tourette's syndrome and RBD was confirmed after polysomnographic studies using the standard criteria. The authors propose possible overlap in the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the two disorders.

This 52-year-old man suffered from auditory hallucinations that occurred during brief episodes of sleep paralysis at the end of REM sleep periods. During these episodes the patient experienced a dissociated state of consciousness with REM sleep intrusions into wakefulness. The occurrence of this mixed state, and of excessive sleep-onset REM periods during daytime polysomnography (MSLT = Multiple Sleep Latency Test), point to a disorder of REM sleep generation. The existence of narcolepsy could be ruled out. The observation of REM sleep-associated hallucinations has been reported earlier. In th
