Photoprintable Photothermal Actuators for Spatially Programmable Shape Morphing.

Photothermal actuation holds great potential for developing smart materials capable of complex shape transformations. Conventional approaches to achieve these transformations often depend on selective light illumination or spatial engineering of mechanical modulus to induce localized responses, which lead to high design complexity and limited programmability. Using photocatalytic nanoparticles, we introduce a photoprintable strategy for fabricating photoactuators with spatially controlled plasmonic nanoparticle distributions and pattern line widths as small as 20 μm. This design enables locali

Photochromic luminescence of organic crystals arising from subtle molecular rearrangement.

Photoluminescence (PL) colour-changing materials in response to photostimulus play an increasingly significant role in intelligent applications for their programmability. Nevertheless, current research mainly focuses on photochemical processes, with less attention to PL transformation through uniform aggregation mode adjustment. Here we show photochromic luminescence in organic crystals (e.g. dimethyl terephthalate) with PL varying from dark blue to purple, then to bright orange-red, and finally to red. This change is attributed to the emergence of clusters with red emission, which is barely a

From emerging modalities to advanced applications of hydrogel piezoelectrics based on chitosan, gelatin and related biological macromolecules: A review.

The rapid development of functional materials and manufacturing technologies is fostering advances in piezoelectric materials (PEMs). PEMs can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Unlike traditional power sources, which need to be replaced and are inconvenient to carry, PEMs have extensive potential applications in smart wearable and implantable devices. However, the application of conventional PEMs is limited by their poor flexibility, low ductility, and susceptibility to fatigue failure. Incorporating hydrogels, which are flexible, stretchable, and self-healing, providing a way

Research Progress on VO2-Based Smart Windows: From Phase Transition Mechanisms to Performance Regulation.

Vanadium dioxide (VO2), a typical thermochromic material, undergoes a metal-semiconductor transition (MST) near 68 °C, accompanied by lattice distortion and band structure reconstruction, making it an ideal material for smart window applications. However, VO2 faces several bottlenecks that limit its engineering applications, including a relatively high phase transition temperature, poor color comfort, trade-offs between visible light transmittance and solar modulation efficiency, and inadequate long-term stability. This paper first discusses the structural evolution and mechanisms of the VO2 p

Synergistic magneto-electro-thermal biochemical cascade modulation enables rapid healing and functional restoration of infected wounds.

The treatment of infected wounds is severely hampered by uncontrolled antimicrobial release and wired stimulation. To address these challenges, a magnetoresponsive smart dressing for on-demand antibacterial and wireless electrical stimulation is fabricated via a dopamine-mediated cascade assembly strategy. Based on electromagnetic induction, the dressing functions as a magneto-electro-thermal biochemical cascade stimulator, wirelessly delivering stable and controllable microcurrents (7.08-19.66 μA) and using thermal effects to trigger on-demand Ag+ release. In vitro experiments demonstrated th

Agricultural-based biopolymer packaging films and AI-integrated smart double-layer systems: Trends and innovations in food science and technology.

The ever-growing concern about petroleum-based packaging and the need to find more sustainable food packaging solutions from agriculture-based biopolymer films has led to this innovation. These materials are derived from biodegradable plant-based sources, including polysaccharides, proteins, and agricultural wastes, which are renewable, biodegradable, and less harmful to the environment. They are, however, low in mechanical and barrier properties and require design solutions. This review identifies recent developments from 2020 to 25 in biodegradable biopolymer films using structural engineeri
