Sharing positive events: Ecological momentary assessment of emotion regulation via social capitalization in schizotypy.

Emotional deficits are prominent in schizophrenia-spectrum psychopathology and linked with poorer outcomes. Schizotypy, an underlying personality organization that putatively confers vulnerability to developing schizophrenia, has been associated with increased negative affect, decreased positive affect, and some difficulty with emotion regulation. This study explored the role of social capitalization, the upregulation of positive emotion when positive life events are shared with others, in schizotypy. Social capitalization is relevant for schizotypy given its association with social functionin

Caring for the Unseen: Using Linking Social Capital to Improve Healthcare Access to Irregular Migrants in Spain.

PURPOSE: To describe a novel strategy using linking social capital to provide healthcare access to irregular migrants with low literacy, low numeracy, and limited cultural assimilation in a European metropolitan area. ORGANIZING CONSTRUCT: Public data show numerous shortcomings in meeting the healthcare needs of refugees and irregular migrants surging into Europe. Many irregular migrants living in European communities are unable to access information, care, or services due to lack of social capital. An overview of the problem and traditional charity strategies, including their barriers, are b

Low-linking social capital as a predictor of mental disorders: a cohort study of 4.5 million Swedes.

Few previous studies have analyzed the association between different dimensions of social capital and mental disorders. This study examines whether there is an association between a relatively new theoretical concept describing the amount of trust between individuals and societal institutions, i.e. linking social capital, and hospitalization due to depression or psychosis. The entire Swedish population aged 25-64, a total of 4.5 million men and women, was followed from January 1, 1997, until the first hospital admission due to depression or psychosis during the study period, or the end of the

Spatial immobility and the dynamics of loneliness, social capital, and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: COVID-19 lockdowns and wider mixing restrictions severely disrupted people's lives with potentially acute implications for their mental health. This study examines how mixing restrictions affected people's loneliness and how far loneliness, in turn, can explain any impact of restrictions on psychological distress. In addition, the study explores whether local social capital (LSC) in residential communities buffered any impact of mixing restrictions on loneliness, and subsequently protected people's mental health, during the pandemic. STUDY DESIGN: Individuals are drawn from three

Access to Network Social Capital and Health Outcomes in Later Life: Understanding the Role of Tie Strength.

Our study contributes to the scholarship by examining the concrete ways in which two distinct types of interpersonal connection-strong/close versus weak/distant-are independently related to self-rated health and life satisfaction cross-nationally. In addition, we explore whether and how the two types of interpersonal connection modify the magnitude of the associations between subjective social status (SSS) and health and well-being of older populations cross-nationally. According to results from our multilevel analysis, social capital available through strong ties (family and friends) is posit

Islamic faith-based organisations and their role in building social capital for post-disaster recovery in Indonesia.

This paper investigates the role of Islamic faith-based organisations (FBOs) in Indonesia and examines the way in which their disaster recovery aid can be successful or less successful depending on social capital formation in communities affected by a disaster. The paper argues that Islamic FBOs play a prominent role in disaster-affected communities by building new social capital or strengthening existing social capital. Failure to do so may affect a community's recovery and its long-term resilience. Applying a framework that considers three types of social capital-bonding, bridging, and linki

Harnessing of Social Capital as a Determinant for Climate Change Adaptation in Mazungunye Communal Lands in Bikita, Zimbabwe.

The livelihoods of rural people have been plagued by the precarious impacts of climate change-related disasters manifesting through floods, heat waves, droughts, cyclones, and erratic temperatures. However, they have not remained passive victims to these impacts. In light of this, rural people are on record of employing a plethora of adaptation strategies to cushion their livelihoods from climate change impacts. In this vew, the role of social capital as a determinant of climate change adaptation is underexplored. Little attention has been paid to how social capital fostered through trust and

Social capital and health in Australia: An overview from the household, income and labour dynamics in Australia survey.

Social capital is associated with better health, but components of social capital and their associations with different types of health are rarely explored together. The aim of this study was to use nationally representative data to develop population norms of community participation and explore the relationships between structural and cognitive components of social capital with three forms of health - general health, mental health and physical functioning. Data were taken from Wave 6 (2006) of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey. Using individual-level data, the stru

Physical activity and social anxiety among rural-origin university students in Southwest China: exploring potential associative patterns of body image satisfaction and social capital.

BACKGROUND: Rural-origin university students in China face distinct psychosocial challenges, with social anxiety being particularly prevalent. Although physical activity is consistently associated with reduced social anxiety, its underlying mechanisms in this population remain unclear, especially regarding the potential statistical mediating roles of body image satisfaction and social capital. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 965 rural-origin undergraduates was conducted in Yunnan Province, China. Validated instruments assessed physical activity, body image satisfaction, social capital, a

The association between social capital and mental health among older people living with HIV: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Older people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) constitute a vulnerable group in society and are at high risk of developing mental health problems. Although strengthening social capital is a common recommendation to reduce such mental health risks, no systematic review has examined the link between social capital and mental health among older people living with HIV. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed studies examining the association between social capital and mental health among adults aged ≥50 years living with HIV. Ethnic minority status and psychological integration among China's internal migrants: the mediating role of bonding social capital.

OBJECTIVE: Despite well-documented socioeconomic disadvantages, ethnic minority migrants in China continue to migrate to urban destinations, presenting the integration paradox. This study aims to examine the relationship between ethnic minority status and psychological integration among China's internal migrants and to explore the mediating pathways, particularly focusing on the mediating role of bonding social capital, thereby unpacking the integration paradox. METHODS: Using data from the 2017 China Migrants Dynamic Survey, ordinary least squares (OLS) regression is first employed to examin

Fishing community resilience to harmful algal blooms: social capital narratives of the 2016 crisis in southern Chile.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) represent a critical environmental challenge for coastal social-ecological systems, generating risks to human health, livelihoods, food security, and ecosystem services. The unprecedented 2016 HAB crisis in southern Chile, triggered by the northward expansion of the paralytic toxin-producing dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, caused extended fishing closures and severe socio-economic disruptions across artisanal fishing communities in the Los Lagos and Los Ríos regions. Despite effective monitoring and management systems that largely prevented human poisoning, pr

Diseases of Despair and Social Capital: Findings from a Population-Based Survey on Opioid Misuse among Adolescents.

Deaths related to opioid overdose have increased substantially in the past few years, raising concerns about how to combat this public health emergency. Objectives: We investigated the association of family, school, and community social capital with opioid misuse in the adolescent population. In addition, we examined if adolescents' depressive symptoms have any mediating effects on opioid misuse. Methods: We used the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data, and two substantive models with binary logistic regressions. Three social capital variables were added to the full model

Hurling alone? How social capital failed to save the Irish from cardiovascular disease in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: We performed a historical review of cardiovascular risk profiles of Irish immigrants to the United States, 1850-1970, in regard to lifestyle, socio-economic circumstances, and social capital. METHODS: We analyzed US Census data from 1850-1970, area-based social and epidemiological data from Boston, data from Ireland's National Nutrition Surveillance Centre, and literature on Irish migration. RESULTS: The Irish were consistently at increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, a risk that related initially to material deprivation, across the life course of at least 2 generations. CO

A latent profile analysis of social anxiety among Chinese left-behind children and adolescents: Associations with online parent-child communication and online social capital.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents impacted by their left-behind status are more likely to suffer social anxiety. In this regard, as information and communication technology has developed, the role of online parent-child communication (OPCC) and online social capital (OSC) has become more important. However, few studies, if any, have examined the profiles of Chinese left-behind children and adolescents and their associations with OPCC and OSC. OBJECTIVE: First, to identify the profiles of social anxiety among Chinese left-behind children and adolescents by conducting latent profile analysis

Exploring the association between social support and reward satisfaction: the mediating role of multi-dimensional psychological capital.

BACKGROUND: Severe workforce shortages persist in China's primary-care facilities, threatening healthcare-system sustainability and population health. Although multiple reward policies have been introduced since the 2009 healthcare reform, most primary healthcare providers remain dissatisfied with organizational incentives. Existing studies have separately examined associations between social support or psychological capital and reward satisfaction. However, most scholars treat psychological capital as a single composite indicator, overlooking distinct pathways of its four sub-dimensions. Furt

Social Capital as a Behavioral Mechanism in Type 2 Diabetes Self-Management Among Black/African American Men.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) disproportionately affects Black/African American men, yet little research examines how social relationships support chronic illness management in this population. Drawing upon Social Capital Theory, this qualitative study analyzed in-depth interviews with a sample of 58 Black/African American men living with T2D to examine how resources embedded in social networks shape self-management practices. Findings show that social capital operates through bonding ties (family and faith communities), bridging ties (peer groups and healthcare professionals), network resources (inst

Exploring Relations Between Psychological Capital, Social Support and Self-Compassion Among Siblings of Individuals With Developmental Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: We examined correlations between psychological capital (PsyCap), social support and self-compassion among siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities versus siblings of individuals without developmental disabilities. METHODS: We hypothesized that (1) there would be positive correlations between PsyCap, social support and self-compassion at the sample level and within each group; (2) siblings of individuals without developmental disabilities would exhibit lower levels of these variables than siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities; and (3) relations betw
