Automated three-dimensional quantification of myocardial perfusion and brain SPECT.

To allow automated and objective reading of nuclear medicine tomography, we have developed a set of tools for clinical analysis of myocardial perfusion tomography (PERFIT) and Brain SPECT/PET (BRASS). We exploit algorithms for image registration and use three-dimensional (3D) "normal models" for individual patient comparisons to composite datasets on a "voxel-by-voxel basis" in order to automatically determine the statistically significant abnormalities. A multistage, 3D iterative inter-subject registration of patient images to normal templates is applied, including automated masking of the ex

Specificity for each of the 46 criteria of the Selvester QRS score for electrocardiographic myocardial scar sizing in left bundle branch block.

BACKGROUND: The Selvester QRS score consists of a set of electrocardiographic criteria designed to identify, quantify and localize scar in the left ventricle using the morphology of the QRS complex. These criteria were updated in 2009 to expand their use to patients with underlying conduction abnormalities, but these versions have thus far only been validated in small and carefully selected populations. AIM: To determine the specificity for each of the criteria of the left bundle branch block (LBBB) modified Selvester QRS Score (LB-SS) in a population with strict LBBB and no myocardial scar a

Fluid-solid interaction: benchmarking of an external coupling of ANSYS with CFX for cardiovascular applications.

Fluid-solid interaction is a primary feature of cardiovascular flows. There is increasing interest in the numerical solution of these systems as the extensive computational resource required for such studies becomes available. One form of coupling is an external weak coupling of separate solid and fluid mechanics codes. Information about the stress tensor and displacement vector at the wetted boundary is passed between the codes, and an iterative scheme is employed to move towards convergence of these parameters at each time step. This approach has the attraction that separate codes with the m

Software for primary healthcare in a developing country. Background and problem statement.

Nurses in primary healthcare (PHC) clinics carry a heavy administrative burden, much of which can be computerized. Advantages and disadvantages of computerization and issues related to patient records and other requirements of computerized systems are well documented. However, not much attention has been given to users' needs in PHC environments in developing countries. Users in township areas have very specific needs because of a lack of previous exposure to computers and a reluctance to change working habits. Some general software requirements that system developers should consider are discu

Cryo-EM Map-Based Model Validation Using the False Discovery Rate Approach.

Significant technological developments and increasing scientific interest in cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has resulted in a rapid increase in the amount of data generated by these experiments and the derived atomic models. Robust measures for the validation of 3D reconstructions and atomic models are essential for appropriate interpretation of the data. The resolution of data and availability of software tools that work across a range of resolutions often limit the quality of derived models. Hence, the final atomic model is often incomplete or contains regions where atomic positions

Using deep learning for estimation of time-since-injury in pediatric accidental fractures.

BACKGROUND: Estimating time-since-injury of healing fractures is imprecise, encompassing excessively wide timeframes. Most injured children are evaluated at non-children's hospitals, yet pediatric radiologists can disagree with up to one in six skeletal imaging interpretations from referring community hospitals. There is a need to improve image interpretation by considering additional methods for fracture dating. OBJECTIVE: To train and validate deep learning models to correctly estimate the age of pediatric accidental long bone fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This secondary data analysis

On the SHELX, PLATON and IUCr/checkCIF crystal structure validation platform.

With checkCIF the IUCr has created a unique platform for the validation and archiving of the result of a small-molecule crystal structure study. That information, supplied in CIF (crystallographic information file) format, should include not only the numerical results of that study but also much of the supporting experimental data and details of the procedures used during the structural investigation. This not only allows for a proper validation of a structure report but also provides an option for a future re-evaluation or use of the data for an unrelated study. The experimental data might be

Virtual temporal bone: an interactive 3-dimensional learning aid for cranial base surgery.

OBJECTIVE: We have developed an interactive virtual model of the temporal bone for the training and teaching of cranial base surgery. METHODS: The virtual model was based on the tomographic data of the Visible Human Project. The male Visible Human's computed tomographic data were volumetrically reconstructed as virtual bone tissue, and the individual photographic slices provided the basis for segmentation of the middle and inner ear structures, cranial nerves, vessels, and brainstem. These structures were created by using outlining and tube editing tools, allowing structural modeling either d

Challenges in Lipidomics Biomarker Identification: Avoiding the Pitfalls and Improving Reproducibility.

Identification of features with high levels of confidence in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) lipidomics research is an essential part of biomarker discovery, but existing software platforms can give inconsistent results, even from identical spectral data. This poses a clear challenge for reproducibility in biomarker identification. In this work, we illustrate the reproducibility gap for two open-access lipidomics platforms, MS DIAL and Lipostar, finding just 14.0% identification agreement when analyzing identical LC-MS spectra using default settings. Whilst the software platfor
