Yellow fever outbreak potential in Djibouti, Somalia and Yemen: a mathematical modelling study.

BACKGROUND: The importation of arbovirus diseases into new countries is a global concern. This risk is exacerbated by human movement and climate change effects. In the World Health Organization (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean regional office, three countries - Djibouti, Somalia, and Yemen - are currently classified as potential or moderate risk for yellow fever (YF) outbreaks. METHODS: Here we present a quantitative assessment of the risk of introduction and propagation of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission in Djibouti, Somalia and Yemen. This modelling has two components: i) projecting the ri

Nutrition Transition, Processed Foods, and Cardiometabolic Risk in Somalia: A Public Health Commentary.

BACKGROUND: Somalia is undergoing a nutrition transition in which traditional camel milk, sorghum, and legume-centred diets are being progressively displaced by imported processed foods high in refined sugars, saturated fats, and dietary cholesterol. This shift is occurring in a population already burdened by undernutrition and a fragile health system. PURPOSE: This narrative commentary synthesises published evidence on the biochemical mechanisms linking excess sugar and cholesterol intake to dyslipidaemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and cardiovascular disease, and considers how these m

Obstetric transition: trends in maternal mortality in Somalia over the last two decades.

BACKGROUND: This paper sheds light on the trends of the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and obstetric transition in Somalia over the last two decades. METHODS: This is a descriptive study comparing aggregate secondary data from the 2006 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey and the 2020 Somali Health and Demographic Survey to show the transition. RESULTS: A 44% reduction of the MMR from 1044 to 692 per 100 000 live births was observed comparing the two surveys. CONCLUSIONS: Somalia has moved from stage I to stage II of the obstetric transition pathway spectrum and there is optimism that the ongo

Bartonella species in dromedaries and ruminants from Lower Shabelle and Benadir regions, Somalia.

BACKGROUND: Bartonellosis, caused by bacteria of the genus Bartonella, is a zoonotic disease with several mammalian reservoir hosts. In Somalia, a country heavily reliant on livestock, zoonotic diseases pose significant public health and economic challenges. To the best of our knowledge, no study has been performed aiming to verify the occurrence of Bartonella spp. in Somalia. This study investigated the occurrence and molecular characterization of Bartonella in dromedary (Camelus dromedarius, Linnaeus, 1758), cattle, sheep, and goats from Somalia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 530 blood samples wer

Maternal Risk Factors Associated with Preterm Births among Pregnant Women in Mogadishu, Somalia.

BACKGROUND: Premature birth impacts millions of newborns annually. Sixty percent of the world's preterm births occur in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Somalia's premature birth rates and maternal risk factors are poorly studied; hence, this study aims to identify maternal risk factors related to premature births in Mogadishu, Somalia. METHODS: This unmatched case-control study was conducted at four maternity hospitals in Mogadishu, Somalia. The cases were newborns with gestational ages of less than 37 weeks; controls were newborns with gestational ages of 37 to 42 weeks. All were live sin

Sheehan syndrome presenting as acute renal failure: A rare case report from Somalia.

Sheehan syndrome (SS) is one of the most common causes of pituitary gland dysfunction in childbearing women and occurs as a result of ischemic pituitary necrosis due to severe postpartum hemorrhage. Rhabdomyolysis is a pathological condition of the skeletal muscles that can be present in the setting of adrenal insufficiency. It can cause serious end-organ complications such as acute renal failure. The combination of adrenal insufficiency due to Sheehan syndrome, rhabdomyolysis, and acute renal failure is extremely rare in the literature. In this case report, we present a 35-year-old female pat

Strengthening Acute Flaccid Paralysis Surveillance Through the Village Polio Volunteers Program in Somalia.

BACKGROUND: Surveillance for cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) is a key strategy adopted for the eradication of polio. Detection of poliovirus circulation is often predicated on the ability to identify AFP cases and test their stool specimens for poliovirus infection in a timely manner. The Village Polio Volunteers (VPV) program was established in 2013 in a bid to strengthen polio eradication activities in Somalia, including AFP surveillance, given the country's vulnerability to polio outbreaks. METHODS: To assess the impact of the VPV program on AFP surveillance, we determined case coun

Relapsing fever in asylum seekers from Somalia arriving in Belgium in August 2015.

Current population displacements favor the re-emerging of diseases, nowadays very rare in Europe. We report two cases of 'imported' relapsing fever in two Somali asylum seekers occurring shortly after their arrival in Belgium. A diagnosis of relapsing fever should be considered in all migrants coming from endemic regions or having traveled in low hygiene and crowded conditions, presenting with recurrent fever, especially if no malaria parasites are found.

A reassortant bunyavirus isolated from acute hemorrhagic fever cases in Kenya and Somalia.

In late 1997 and early 1998, a large outbreak of hemorrhagic fever occurred in East Africa. Clinical samples were collected in Kenya and southern Somalia, and 27 of 115 (23%) hemorrhagic fever patients tested showed evidence of acute infection with Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus as determined by IgM detection, virus isolation, detection of virus RNA by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), or immunohistochemistry. However, two patients (one from Kenya and the other from Somalia) whose illness met the hemorrhagic fever case definition yielded virus isolates that were not RVF.

Strengthening Prehospital Emergency Care in Somalia: Current Barriers and Priorities for System Reform.

Effective prehospital emergency care is a core component of an emergency care system because assessment, initial stabilization, communication, and transport begin before definitive hospital treatment. In Somalia, prehospital services remain fragmented, with substantial reliance on informal transport and limited access to trained responders, standardized protocols, dispatch, and coordinated referral. Somalia-specific reports have documented major gaps in organized prehospital care, including limited ambulance capacity and a lack of a unified national system. This Perspective examines these barr

Mental Health Beyond Conflict: Cultural and Structural Barriers to Psychiatric Care in Somalia.

Mental health challenges in Somalia are shaped by a complex interaction between fragile healthcare infrastructure and sociocultural factors influencing psychiatric care utilization. This commentary critically examines how stigma, spiritual and supernatural interpretations of mental illness, informal healing systems, limited mental health literacy, and severe shortages of psychiatric services shape help-seeking behaviors and access to formal mental healthcare in Somalia. In many Somali communities, mental illness may be interpreted through frameworks involving jinn possession, the evil eye, and
