Manipulating speech perception with amplitude-modulated kilohertz magnetic perturbation (AM-kTMP).

Speech perception has been hypothesized to exploit neural activity that entrains to the rhythmic properties of the utterance. Perceptual sensitivity varies with the phase of oscillatory activity induced by speech, and with an external oscillatory perturbation induced by transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) over the temporal lobe. Here we used a new form of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS), kilohertz transcranial magnetic perturbation (kTMP), in which a low frequency perturbation is created by the amplitude modulation (AM) of a continuous high-frequency carrier signal (3.5 k

Esthetic perception of mandibular anterior teeth during speech and dynamic smile.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the esthetic perception of the mandibular anterior teeth during speech by comparing the assessments of laypeople (LP) and orthodontists (ODs). METHODS: A Class I occlusion model was filmed pronouncing "Czechoslovakia" and smiling. Dynamic smile and speech images were extracted and digitally manipulated to create various dental conditions: ideal alignment, mandibular canine extrusion, mandibular incisor crowding, inclined mandibular occlusal plane, mandibular incisor diastema, and mandibular incisor extraction simulation. Forty-eight participants from each gr

Effects of hearing acuity on psychophysiological responses to effortful speech perception.

In recent studies, psychophysiological measures have been used as markers of listening effort, but there is limited research on the effect of hearing loss on such measures. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of hearing acuity on physiological responses and subjective measures acquired during different levels of listening demand, and to investigate the relationship between these measures. A total of 125 participants (37 males and 88 females, age range 37-72 years, pure-tone average hearing thresholds at the best ear between -5.0 to 68.8 dB HL and asymmetry between ears b

Changes in speech prosody perception during Parkinson's disease: A comprehensive analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects approximately 1%-2% of individuals aged 60 and above. Communication disorders in PD can significantly impact the overall quality of life. As prosody plays a vital role in verbal communication, the present study examines Persian prosody perception in PD, focusing on linguistic and emotional aspects of prosody. METHODS: This cross-sectional study aimed to compare the perception of linguistic and emotional prosody in three groups: middle-aged adults (n = 22; mean age = 50.40 years), healthy older adul

Autistic traits and speech perception in social and non-social noises.

Individuals with the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience difficulties in perceiving speech in background noises with temporal dips; they also lack social orienting. We tested two hypotheses: (1) the higher the autistic traits, the lower the performance in the speech-in-noise test, and (2) individuals with high autistic traits experience greater difficulty in perceiving speech, especially in the non-vocal noise, because of their attentional bias toward non-vocal sounds. Thirty-eight female Japanese university students participated in an experiment measuring their ability to perceive speec

Ceiling effects for speech perception tests in pediatric cochlear implant users.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of ceiling effects for commonly used speech perception tests in a large population of children who received a cochlear implant (CI) before the age of four. A secondary goal was to determine the demographic factors that were relevant for predicting which children were more likely to reach ceiling level performance. We hypothesize that ceiling effects are highly prevalent for most tests. DESIGN: Retrospective chart review of children receiving a CI between 2002 and 2014. RESULTS: 165 children were included. Median scores wer

COVID-19 and Deafness: Impact of Face Masks on Speech Perception.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has made wearing face masks a common habit in public places. Several reports have underlined the increased difficulties encountered by deaf people in speech comprehension, resulting in a higher risk of social isolation and psychological distress. PURPOSE: To address the detrimental effect of different types of face masks on speech perception, according to the listener hearing level and background noise. RESEARCH DESIGN: Quasi-experimental cross-sectional study. STUDY SAMPLE: Thirty patients were assessed: 16 with normal hearing [NH], and 14 hearing-impaired

Speech Perception and Production in Cochlear Implant Recipients with Pendred Syndrome.

AIMS: Patients with the Pendred syndrome suffer very often from a hearing loss. They may be good candidates for a cochlear implantation, but unfortunately, due to the fluctuating character of the hearing loss, they may escape such indication. In the study, we compared speech production and speech acquisition in 2 groups of implanted patients: those with the Pendred syndrome, and standard non-syndromic patients. METHODS: Ten patients with Pendred syndrome were analyzed for speech perception and production. The control group consisted of 41 non-syndromic implanted patients. All implantees were

Acute Alcohol Intake Deteriorates Hearing Thresholds and Speech Perception in Noise.

OBJECTIVES: The hearing process involves complex peripheral and central auditory pathways and could be influenced by various situations or medications. To date, there is very little known about the effects of alcohol on the auditory performances. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate how acute alcohol administration affects various aspects of hearing performance in human subjects, from the auditory perceptive threshold to the speech-in-noise task, which is cognitively demanding. METHODS: A total of 43 healthy volunteers were recruited, and each of the participants received calculat

Relationship Between Respiratory Sensory Perception, Speech, and Swallow in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that sensory impairments contribute significantly to the motor deficits secondary to impaired sensorimotor integration in Parkinson's disease. Speech and swallowing are likely to become disordered in PD, and there is evidence that impaired upper airway sensation also contributes to these disorders. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between perception of general respiratory sensation, speech, and swallowing in PD. METHODS: Thirteen people with PD and 14 age-equivalent controls volunteered to participate. Randomized blocks

Phonological processing in speech perception: What do sonority differences tell us?

Previous research has associated the inferior frontal and posterior temporal brain regions with a number of phonological processes. In order to identify how these specific brain regions contribute to phonological processing, we manipulated subsyllabic phonological complexity and stimulus modality during speech perception using fMRI. Subjects passively attended to visual or auditory pseudowords. Similar to previous studies, a bilateral network of cortical regions was recruited during the presentation of visual and auditory stimuli. Moreover, pseudowords recruited a similar network of regions as

Effects of insertion depth of cochlear implant electrodes upon speech perception.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the insertion depth of a cochlear implant array affects postoperative speech perception. DESIGN: The subjects were 48 postlingually deaf adults who received either the Nucleus 22 or the Nucleus 24 cochlear implant with a straight array. A postoperative radiograph of the cochlear electrode was used to estimate insertion depth, as either the angle of the electrode tip (angle) or the intracochlear length of the electrode (length). Other estimates of insertion depth included the numbers of active electrodes and channels used by the speech processor. Electrode dep

Dynamic visual speech perception in a patient with visual form agnosia.

To examine the role of dynamic cues in visual speech perception, a patient with visual form agnosia (DF) was tested with a set of static and dynamic visual displays of three vowels. Five conditions were tested: (1) auditory only which provided only vocal pitch information, (2) dynamic visual only, (3) dynamic audiovisual with vocal pitch information, (4) dynamic audiovisual with full voice information and (5) static visual only images of postures during vowel production. DF showed normal performance in all conditions except the static visual only condition in which she scored at chance. Contro

Speech perception deficits in poor readers: a reply to Denenberg's critique.

We reply to Denenberg's (1999) recent critique of our work (Mody, Studdert-Kennedy, & Brady, 1997). Denenberg mounted two main lines of criticism, one concerning characteristics of the population sampled for the experimental group, and the other a statistical critique, concerning (a) violation of parametric assumptions for use of the F distribution and (b) our supposed acceptance of the null hypothesis of no differences between experimental and control groups. We show that the first criticism stemmed from a misunderstanding of the experimental hypothesis and that the second can be answered by

Perception of voice cues and speech-in-speech by children with prelingual single-sided deafness and a cochlear implant.

Voice cues, such as fundamental frequency (F0) and vocal tract length (VTL), help listeners identify the speaker's gender, perceive the linguistic and emotional prosody, and segregate competing talkers. Postlingually implanted adult cochlear implant (CI) users seem to have difficulty in perceiving and making use of voice cues, especially of VTL. Early implanted child CI users, in contrast, perceive and make use of both voice cues better than CI adults, and in patterns similar to their peers with normal hearing (NH). In our study, we investigated the perception and use of voice cues in children

Exploring Australian speech-language pathologists' use and perceptions ofnon-speech oral motor exercises.

PURPOSE: To explore Australian speech-language pathologists' use of non-speech oral motor exercises, and rationales for using/not using non-speech oral motor exercises in clinical practice. METHODS: A total of 124 speech-language pathologists practising in Australia, working with paediatric and/or adult clients with speech sound difficulties, completed an online survey. RESULTS: The majority of speech-language pathologists reported that they did not use non-speech oral motor exercises when working with paediatric or adult clients with speech sound difficulties. However, more than half of the

Exploring perception of coarticulatory cues in childhood apraxia of speech and residual speech sound disorders: A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) exhibit speech production deficits beyond segmental errors, including atypical coarticulation. Broadly, children with speech sound disorders (SSD) also exhibit weaknesses in speech perception, which may directly relate to specific production difficulties. This study examined differences in categorical perception among children with CAS, residual SSD affecting /ɹ/ (rSSD), and typical speech (TD). We hypothesized that children with CAS would demonstrate weaker performance on a task requiring perception of coarticulatory cues-a definin
