Variety is Not the Spice of Life: Inconsistent Definitions of Failure After Hip Reconstruction in Cerebral Palsy.

BACKGROUND: Hip displacement (subluxation or dislocation) is common in children with cerebral palsy (CP), especially those who are nonambulatory. If unaddressed, this can cause pain, stiffness, hygiene difficulties, and seating imbalance. Progressive hip subluxation or dislocation often requires surgery, and further displacement after reconstruction may be described as "failure." There is currently no standardized definition of failure after the index procedure. This review aimed to identify published failure definitions and compile reported failure rates after index bony hip reconstruction.

Curry spice allergy associated with pollen-food allergy syndrome and latex fruit-syndrome.

We report a 22-year-old woman with urticaria, dyspnea and bronchial asthma-like attacks after eating curried rice. We found the symptoms to be due to an immediate-type allergy caused by spice antigens contained in curry spices by detailed questioning, skin test and measurement of specific immunoglobulin (Ig)E antibodies. This case was complicated with pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFAS) from melon and latex allergy (LA) to natural rubber latex (NRL) antigen and she had also had atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis and pollinosis. Serum specific IgE antibodies to birch profilin (Bet v 2), latex

Identification of hot spots in the variola virus complement inhibitor (SPICE) for human complement regulation.

Variola virus, the causative agent of smallpox, encodes a soluble complement regulator named SPICE. Previously, SPICE has been shown to be much more potent in inactivating human complement than the vaccinia virus complement control protein (VCP), although they differ only in 11 amino acid residues. In the present study, we have expressed SPICE, VCP, and mutants of VCP by substituting each or more of the 11 non-variant VCP residues with the corresponding residue of SPICE to identify hot spots that impart functional advantage to SPICE over VCP. Our data indicate that (i) SPICE is approximately 9

Suppression of the nuclear factor-kappaB activation pathway by spice-derived phytochemicals: reasoning for seasoning.

The activation of nuclear transcription factor kappaB has now been linked with a variety of inflammatory diseases, including cancer, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, diabetes, allergy, asthma, arthritis, Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, psoriasis, septic shock, and AIDS. Extensive research in the last few years has shown that the pathway that activates this transcription factor can be interrupted by phytochemicals derived from spices such as turmeric (curcumin), red pepper (capsaicin), cloves (eugenol), ginger (gingerol), cumin, anise, and fennel (

The curry spice curcumin reduces oxidative damage and amyloid pathology in an Alzheimer transgenic mouse.

Inflammation in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients is characterized by increased cytokines and activated microglia. Epidemiological studies suggest reduced AD risk associates with long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Whereas chronic ibuprofen suppressed inflammation and plaque-related pathology in an Alzheimer transgenic APPSw mouse model (Tg2576), excessive use of NSAIDs targeting cyclooxygenase I can cause gastrointestinal, liver, and renal toxicity. One alternative NSAID is curcumin, derived from the curry spice turmeric. Curcumin has an extensive history as a food

Evaluation of the mineral composition, phytochemical and proximate constituents of three culinary spices in Nigeria: a comparative study.

Spices are prolific sources of phytochemicals of pharmaceutical and nutritional importance. They have been employed for centuries in the treatment of various maladies, in cuisines, and as inhibitors of oxidative degradation in foods. On this premise, a comparative assessment of the quantitative mineral composition, phytochemical and proximate constituents of Xylopia aethiopica (fruits), Piper guineense (seeds), and Rhaphiostylis beninensis (roots) was done using standard protocols. Subsequently, methanol extracts of the spices were subjected to Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) anal

Determining multifumigants in whole grains and legumes, milled and low-fat grain products, spices, citrus fruit, and beverages.

Whole grain and legumes, milled and low-fat products, spices, citrus fruit, and dry beverage ingredients are leached with purified, acidified acetone-water solutions. Portions of these leachates are then back-extracted with purified isooctane. Liquid beverages are directly extracted with the isooctane. Six to 10 microL of each isooctane extract is then screened for 11 fumigant residues by gas chromatography (GC) using electron-capture and Hall electroconductivity detectors, and dual 20% OV-101 columns. Further confirmation of residue identity is done on 20% OV-225/20% OV-17 (2.5 + 1 mixed-bed)

Food Matrix as a Modulator of Spice Phytochemical Bioactivity: Evidence from In Vitro, Animal, and Human Studies.

Spices contain numerous bioactive compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and metabolic effects. However, their biological activity depends strongly on the food matrix, which influences phytochemical stability, bioaccessibility, and physiological responses. This review evaluates the complex interactions between phytochemicals from selected spices-turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves-and various food components, including proteins, lipids, dietary fiber, and sweeteners. Drawing on evidence from in vitro models, animal studies, and human trials, the scope encompasses the

Rapid qualitative identification and quantitative detection of three common spice extracts based on SERS technology.

In the quality control of braised meat products, the content of spice extract in braised soup is often used as one of the important indexes to evaluate its flavor and quality. However, the existing research methods mostly rely on chromatography-mass spectrometry for quantitative analysis, which has some problems such as complex operation, long period, high requirements for equipment and professional technology. To enable rapid detection of spice extracts while reducing analytical costs and improving efficiency, this study took the main extracts of star anise, Sichuan pepper and chili peppers,

Inhibition of the multidrug efflux pump LmrS from Staphylococcus aureus by cumin spice Cuminum cyminum.

Staphylococcus aureus is a serious causative agent of infectious disease. Multidrug-resistant strains like methicillin-resistant S. aureus compromise treatment efficacy, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Active efflux represents a major antimicrobial resistance mechanism. The proton-driven multidrug efflux pump, LmrS, actively exports structurally distinct antimicrobials. To circumvent resistance and restore clinical efficacy of antibiotics, efflux pump inhibitors are necessary, and natural edible spices like cumin are potential candidates. The mode of cumin antibacterial action and

The effect of visitor number and spice provisioning in pacing expression by jaguars evaluated through a case study.

Captive animals exhibit stereotypic pacing in response to multiple causes, including the inability to escape from human contact. Environmental enrichment techniques can minimize pacing expression. By using an individual-based approach, we addressed whether the amount of time two males and a female jaguar (Panthera onca) devote to pacing varied with the number of visitors and tested the effectiveness of cinnamon and black pepper in reducing pacing. The amount of time that all jaguars engaged in pacing increased significantly with the number of visitors. Despite the difference between the males
