It is well accepted that the aortic plexus is a network of pre- and post-ganglionic nerves overlying the abdominal aorta, which is primarily involved with the sympathetic innervation to the mesenteric, pelvic and urogenital organs. Because a comprehensive anatomical description of the aortic plexus and its connections with adjacent plexuses are lacking, these delicate structures are prone to unintended damage during abdominal surgeries. Through dissection of fresh, frozen human cadavers (n = 7), the present study aimed to provide the first complete mapping of the nerves and ganglia of the aort

Fentanyl (10 and 30 mug/kg), a narcotic analgesic, induced in cats a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate and reduced spontaneous splanchnic nerve activity. Fentanyl reduced the pressor response to medullary stimulation, but did not change the pressor response to hypothalamic or cervical spinal cord stimulation. Fentanyl reduced the potential evoked in the splanchnic nerve by stimulation at low frequency of a pressor area of the medulla oblongata. The potentials evoked in the splanchnic nerve by hypothalamic or cervical spinal cord stimulation were only slightly changed. Nalorphine (0.5 m

The effects of hypothalamic lesions and intravenous glucose infusion on the efferent activity of vagal and splanchnic nerves to the pancreas were studied in anesthetized rats. Lesions of the ventromedial hypothalamic (VMH), the dorsomedial hypothalamic (DMH) and the paraventricular (PVN) nuclei increased vagal and reduced splanchnic nerve activity. Lesion of the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) decreased pancreatic vagal nerve activity, and produced either increased or decreased activity of pancreatic splanchnic nerve. Intravenous glucose infusion increased activity of the vagal nerve and reduc

Chronic intractable pain is a common problem in severe pancreatic disease. Bilateral thoracoscopic splanchnotomy, a thoracoscopic neurotomy of the splanchnic nerves, is rarely performed but may provide significant pain relief in these patients. We present a safe strategy that uses prone positioning and two thoracoscopic ports for either hemithorax, permitting easy exposure and simple dissection of the greater and lesser splanchnic nerves. In our experience, this technique provides excellent pain relief with a minimal postoperative stay and few postoperative adverse events. This intervention ha

The splanchnic anti-inflammatory pathway, the efferent arm of the endogenous inflammatory reflex, has been shown to suppress the acute inflammatory response of rats to systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Here we show for the first time that this applies also to mice, and that the reflex may be engaged by a range of inflammatory stimuli. Experiments were performed on mice under deep anaesthesia. Half the animals were subjected to bilateral section of the splanchnic sympathetic nerves, to disconnect the splanchnic anti-inflammatory pathway, while the remainder underwent a sham operation. Mice wer

We investigated a neural reflex that controls the strength of inflammatory responses to immune challenge - the inflammatory reflex. In anaesthetized rats challenged with intravenous lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 60 μg kg(-1)), we found strong increases in plasma levels of the key inflammatory mediator tumour necrosis factor α (TNFα) 90 min later. Those levels were unaffected by previous bilateral cervical vagotomy, but were enhanced approximately 5-fold if the greater splanchnic sympathetic nerves had been cut. Sham surgery had no effect, and plasma corticosterone levels were unaffected by nerve se

Synaptic neurotransmission at the splanchnic nerve-chromaffin cell synapse is a chief element of the stimulus-secretion coupling in the adrenal medullary tissue, managing and regulating the secretion of catecholamines. Making the state of play more intricate than initially envisioned, the synaptic vesicles of nerve terminals innervating the medulla contain various compounds, including various neurotransmitters and neuropeptides. Under basal conditions associated with a low splanchnic nerve discharge rate, neurotransmission is ensured by the synaptic release of the primary neurotransmitter acet

1. Electrical activity of multifibre renal, splenic, mesenteric and greater splanchnic nerves and 13th thoracic white rami was recorded in artificially respired, urethane-anaesthetized rats. Discharge of neurones in the rostral ventrolateral medulla was blocked by unilateral microinjections of the inhibitory amino acid glycine and effects on the electrical activity of these sympathetic nerves were compared. 2. Blockade of the rostral ventrolateral medulla caused greater decreases in discharge of renal than splenic nerves and had no consistent effect on mesenteric nerves. This blockade also dec

BACKGROUND: In digestive tract surgery, dissection of an avascular space consisting of loose connective tissue (LCT) appearing by countertraction improves oncological outcomes and reduces complications.1-3 Kumazu et al.4 described a deep learning approach that automatically segments LCT to help surgeons.4 During left colorectal surgery, lumbar splanchnic, hypogastric, and pelvic visceral nerve injuries cause sexual dysfunction and/or urinary issues.5 As nerve preservation is critical for functional preservation, the AI model Kumazu reported is named Eureka (Anaut Inc., Tokyo, Japan) and was de

We have shown that electroacupuncture (EA) at the Neiguan-Jianshi (N-J) acupoints over the median nerve reduces myocardial ischemia by modulating the pressor response induced by application of bradykinin on the gallbladder. The present study was designed to investigate the neural substrate underlying the prolonged modulatory effect of EA on visceral afferent input into the rostral ventral lateral medulla (rVLM). Experiments were performed on ventilated anesthetized cats. Neuronal activity was recorded while either stimulating the splanchnic nerve or applying EA at the N-J acupoints. Thirty-thr

In acute experiments on anesthetized cats, the central stumps of nerve branches innervating different parts of the stomach were electrically stimulated. Impulses from sympathetic efferents of the left major splanchnic nerve and the smooth muscle potentials from the gastric pylorus were recorded. The prevalence of sympathoinhibitory effects was shown during stimulation of the gastric branch of the dorsal trunk and pyloric branch of the ventral trunk of vagus subphrenic branches. Weak stimulatory effects were observed during stimulation of the same nerves after cervical vagotomy. The sympatho-in

Electrical stimulation of the pancreatic anterior part produces a respiratory arrest followed by a short polypnea. In some cases (20%) the same effects are obtained by electrical stimulation of the afferent nerves. The afferent fibres involved in this phenomena are situated in the great splanchnic nerves.

BACKGROUND: Nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy was established by Japanese gynecologists. They identified two parts of the cardinal ligament, namely the vascular part and the neural part, and postulated that the neural part contained the pelvic splanchnic nerves. However, our fresh cadaver studies demonstrated that these nerves ran dorsomedially in contrast to the classical concept. The aim of this study is to further validate this finding in clinical cases.
METHODS: We examined the intraoperative biopsy specimens collected from the neural part of the cardinal ligament in four patients with c

The effects of caerulein on gastric motility in urethane-anesthetized rats were studied. Caerulein administered into the lateral cerebral ventricle (i.c.v.) and jugular vein (i.v.) caused predominantly an inhibitory effect on gastric motility but sometimes an excitatory or a biphasic effect. The inhibitory response was reduced after vagotomy and/or splanchnicotomy, or after guanethidine. The remaining inhibitory response was abolished by tetrodotoxin, but was resistant to atropine and guanethidine. The excitatory response was abolished by atropine. Discharges of the gastric branch of the vagus

To explore the peripheral signal controlling ejaculatory reactions, contraction of the seminal tract and seminal emission were monitored in the dog during electrical stimulation of the lumbar and greater splanchinc nerves in the presence or absence of sympathetic pathways connecting the lumbar sympathetic trunk to the seminal tract including the vas deferens, prostate and bladder neck. Electrical stimulation of the lumbar splanchnic nerve caused seminal emission, elevation of intraluminal pressure of the vas deferens and bladder neck, and contraction of the prostate without elevation of blood
