STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study; ecological study.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the efficacy of wearing compression stockings to prevent muscle damage and to maintain running performance during a marathon competition.
BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced muscle damage has been identified as one of the main causes of the progressive decrease in running and muscular performance found during marathon races.
METHODS: Thirty-four experienced runners were pair-matched for age, anthropometric data, and best race time in the marathon, and randomly assigned to a control group (n = 17) of runners who wore convent

The goal of this study was to investigate the influence of medical compression stockings on venolymphatic drainage in phlebologically healthy test persons and patients with chronic venous insufficiency. Using this new method, the outflow of an intradermally injected sodium fluorescein solution can be densitrometrically determined over a period of 60 min. In an evaluation of the method carried out over 5 weeks with 4 test persons, the variation coefficient was 19.3%, indicating a sufficient reproducibility. Concerning the effect of below-knee stockings (ankle pressure 30 mm Hg) on venolymphatic

We tested 80 spinal cord injury or lesion patients admitted to Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of Chang Gung Memorial hospital from Jan, 1994 to Aug, 1994, in order to assess the effectiveness of compression stockings of different pressures. The study group consisted of patients who, after leaving bed for 4 hours, had a volume change in the lower extremities greater than 50 c.c., as measured by a specially designed water bucket. One of the lower limb was used as the control group and the other limb was used as the experimental group. Different stocking compression pressure, 12 mmHg 20 mm

Graduated compression stockings and intermittent pneumatic compression boots reduce the incidence of deep vein thrombosis. Recent studies suggest that the simultaneous use of these devices may have a synergistic prophylactic effect; however, conflicting reports also exist. Using duplex imaging, we analyzed the effect on peak venous velocity in the superficial femoral vein produced by the individual and simultaneous use of graduated compression stockings and intermittent pneumatic compression boots. Normal volunteers and postoperative patients were examined. The use of intermittent pneumatic co

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the effect of graduated compression stockings on the venous reflux in the lower limbs of pregnant women.
METHOD: A controlled randomized clinical trial was performed with sixty women: intervention group (n = 30), who used compression stockings, and control group (n = 30). Using duplex-ultrasound, the reflux time and peak reflux velocity in the great saphenous vein and small saphenous vein were analyzed.
RESULTS: Great saphenous vein reflux times in the intervention group were 0.13 s at the beginning (initial) and 0.04 s at the end of pregnancy (final) in the right leg

Thirty established fixed flexion deformities of the knee in 18 rheumatoid arthritis patients were studied prospectively to assess the results of 8 weeks of out-patient treatment using the Flowtron intermittent compression stocking. A 44% mean correction of the fixed flexion deformity was obtained from an initial mean of 29 +/- 1 degrees to 16 +/- 1 degrees (P less than 0.001). More than 85% of this correction was obtained in the first 4 weeks of treatment. There was a significant correlation between the correction obtained and the inflation pressure (P less than 0.05), but the time of daily us

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant complication following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), with considerable implications for patient outcomes. The purpose of this study is to assess the incidence of VTE after fast-track TKA at our center and to evaluate whether the use of graded compression stockings (GCS) can further reduce VTE incidence within this regimen.
METHODS: A total of 660 patients undergoing primary TKA between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2022, were included. Patients were categorized into two groups: GCS group (n = 390) and non-GCS group (n = 270). Knee

One hundred and seventy-six patients scheduled for elective major abdominal surgery were randomized to two prophylactic regimens to prevent postoperative thromboembolism. All patients were screened with the 125I-labelled fibrinogen uptake test, and thromboembolism was verified by ascending phlebography and/or perfusion/ventilation lung scintigraphy. In the group of patients receiving low-dose heparin treatment (5000 units twice daily subcutaneously) 12 per cent developed thromboembolic complications. In the other group, where low-dose heparin treatment was supplemented with graded compression

BACKGROUND: Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a common long-term complication following deep vein thrombosis (DVT), leading to substantial morbidity and impaired quality of life. Elastic compression stockings (ECS) are widely used for PTS prevention; however, their effectiveness remains controversial, particularly across different severities of PTS.
METHOD: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of ECS in preventing PTS after DVT. Electronic databases were searched from inception to January 20, 2026. The primary

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effectiveness of graduated elastic compression stockings (GECS) below the knee in improving symptoms in patients with varicose veins in the absence of high quality evidence.
METHODS: This was a randomised double blind placebo controlled trial. Thirty patients with no experience of elastic stockings, presenting with primary varicose veins causing calf pain or aching were randomised to a GECS (18-21 mmHg at the ankle level, n=15) or a placebo stocking (0 mmHg, n=15). Pain or aching of the index leg after 1 week was the primary outcome measure. In patients with bil

BACKGROUND: Here, we update an earlier systematic review on the preventive efficacy of active compression stockings in patients with diagnosed proximal deep venous thrombosis (DVT) by including the results of recently published trials. The aims are to synthesize the results of the original studies, and to identify details to explain heterogeneous results.
METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, and Medline for original studies that compared the preventive efficacy of active compression stockings with placebo or no compression stockings in patients with diagnosed proximal DV

BACKGROUND: Lower limb lymphedema (LLL) is a frequent complication after gynecological cancer treatment, with a significant impact on quality of life. Despite the common use of compression therapy in managing established lymphedema, its role in prevention remains insufficiently explored.
METHODS: In this prospective randomized study, 64 women treated for gynecological malignancies were assigned to either a compression group (CG) using medium-pressure stockings (23-32 mmHg) or a no-compression group (NCG). All participants received standard education and physical activity guidance. Limb volume

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Medical compression stockings (MCS) are indicated for chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) of all stages and are an indispensable component in lymphedema therapy. In all, 8% of the German population has been prescribed MCS by a physician-more women than men (12% vs. 5%), and especially persons aged 60 years and older (17%). Patient adherence is relevant for successful treatment with MCS. We examined MCS use from the patient's perspective.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study examined the quality of care through structured interviews with 414 representative users in 2019. Findin

BACKGROUND: The incidence of perioperative pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) has increased in Japan. As the mortality rate of PE is very high, its prophylaxis is important.
METHODS: From January 1998 to December 1999 no prophylactic strategies were employed. From May 2000 to December 2004, elastic stockings (ES) for prevention of perioperative deep vein thrombosis were worn from the morning of the operation until the beginning of ambulation. Intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) apparatuses were used in combination with ES right after the induction of anesthesia until leaving ICU. Sixty perc

BACKGROUND: Reduced venous return is an important trigger of vasovagal syncope (VVS). Elastic compression stockings (ECS) can modify venous return and be of therapeutic interest; however, evidence for ECS efficacy in VVS is scarce. This randomized controlled trial was designed to address the issue.
METHODS: COMFORTS-II is a multicenter, triple-blind, parallel design, randomized controlled trial aimed to assess the efficacy of ECS in preventing VVS recurrences. Using central online randomization, 268 participants will be allocated to 2 arms (1:1 ratio), wearing intervention ECS (25-30 mm Hg pr

BACKGROUND: Whether compression stockings are effective in the prevention of post thrombotic syndrome in patients with deep vein thrombosis remains unknown. Since the recently published SOX trial, no meta-analysis has been done to re-evaluate the available literature on whether compression stockings are beneficial in these patients. We aimed to determine the effectiveness of elastic compression stockings on preventing post thrombotic syndrome in patients with deep vein thrombosis.
METHODS: For this meta-analysis, we searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Embase databases from inception to

OBJECTIVE: to develop a model simulating factors of "long haul" flight to investigate the relationship with DVT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: volunteers (19 males: 20 females) sat for 6 h in a warm (>25 degrees C), dry environment, limited in movement, consuming alcohol (40 ml of 40% alcohol/hour) and salted foods (300 g). Half of the subjects received 150 mg aspirin and wore especially designed below-knee, compression stockings (Class 1 profile). Changes in full blood counts were recorded, and as an indication of DVT formation, plasma was analysed for D-dimer. Limb swelling was assessed from leg m

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the UK and is also a major cause of long-term morbidity. Recent UK national guidelines recommend thromboprophylaxis, which includes the use of graduated compression stockings (GCS), for high-risk women to reduce the risk of VTE in both the antenatal and postpartum period. This study of 17 women examined the effects of GCS on the deep venous system in the immediate postpartum period and found a statistically significant reduction in the diameter of the common femoral vein (CFV) (pre- versus post stocking diameter: mean 1
