Do underrepresented minority medical students differ from non-minority students in problem-solving ability?

BACKGROUND: In medical education, examinations must assess a logical progression toward problem-solving skills. Differences in cognitive development between underrepresented minority students (URMs) and non-URMs may affect examination performance and subsequent attrition rates. PURPOSE: The authors investigated URM and non-URM performances by retrospectively analyzing success rates on exam items of differing cognitive demand. METHOD: Mean correct responses to exam items classified as Recall, Interpretation, or Problem-Solving questions were calculated. Both URM and non-URM groups were strati

Medical student attrition: a 10-year survey in one medical school.

Medical student wastage leads to adverse emotional and social consequences for individual students and financial difficulties and morale problems for medical schools. This study retrospectively assessed the records of all students at Leeds School of Medicine who left the course prematurely between 1983 and 1992. The demographic data of the leavers were compared with those of all students entering the school during the 10 years studied. A-level examination choices and results of the leavers were compared with those of a control group of all students who entered the school in 1990. The attrition

[Knowledge and attitudes towards corneal donation among medical students].

BACKGROUND: Corneal transplantation can greatly improve or even fully restore vision in people with corneal diseases. In Germany, organ donation rates have been low for many years, so the demand for corneal tissue continues to exceed the available supply. A major reason for this shortage is the limited awareness and understanding of corneal donation. This study aimed to assess the knowledge of medical students at the University of Tübingen about corneal donation and to examine what influence a lecture on the topic could have. METHODS: A total of 129 students completed a questionnaire with 21

Evaluation of medical students' awareness regarding acute rheumatic fever.

Acute rheumatic fever (ARF) is an autoimmune disease that develops as a complication of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal infections and may lead to rheumatic heart disease, particularly in children and young adults in developing countries. With an annual incidence of approximately 10-20 per 100,000, Turkey is considered a moderate-to-high risk country. Early diagnosis, treatment, and prophylaxis are crucial in the prevention of ARF and rheumatic heart disease. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge level of first-year medical students (in the basic medical education phase) and sixth-ye

Alcohol consumption and associated psychosocial factors in medical students.

A high prevalence of alcohol consumption has been described among medical students. However, due to possible variations in the patterns of alcohol consumption and possible biological, social and cultural differences among different populations, it is relevant to address the relations that exist between at-risk alcohol consumption and associated social and psychological factors in a group of medical students. A cross-sectional study was carried out. In the AUDIT, at-risk alcohol use was defined as ≥ 8 (males) and ≥6 (females). Associations were assessed using multivariable logistic regression.
