Survey of hepatitis B and C in addiction treatment unit.

The survey on our unit revealed that 80% of injection drug users (IDUs) had hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAB), and 90% had hepatitis C virus antibody (HCVAB). Less than half of each group did not know or were unsure of the mode of transmission and spread of HCV. These findings emphasize the need to focus on education, especially about transmission of hepatitis B and C infection in drug addicts, particularly IDUs.

Use of Psychoactive Substances Before Incarceration Among Prison Inmates With Drug Abuse or Dependence: Data From the OPPIDUM Program.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of dependence and abuse of psychoactive substances (PAS) among prison inmates, using data from the OPPIDUM program between 2013 and 2022. METHODS: OPPIDUM is an annual, cross-sectional national program, conducted among users consulting in specialised addiction centres. Prison inmates were questioned about their PAS use during the week preceding their incarceration. Two groups of participants were compared: prison inmates who reported simple use of PAS and those with abuse/dependence problems. RESULTS: A total of 2626 indivi

Changing Drug Consumption Patterns Among Clients Attending the Medically Supervised Injecting Centre, Sydney: Implications for Service Provision and Harm Reduction Response.

INTRODUCTION: The Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) in Sydney (Australia) provides a supervised space for people to inject pre-obtained drugs. We investigated injecting patterns among clients over time and the impact on overdose risk and client behaviours. METHODS: MSIC holds information on visit-specific drug injected, overdose, and sanctions for disruptive behaviour. Data for May 2001 to December 2024 were analysed. Where amphetamines or opioids were injected, the study record was marked accordingly. Data were aggregated to an annual visit summary and drug categorised int

Cocaine-induced splenic rupture.

Splenic rupture is a rare but serious complication from cocaine abuse. Given the ubiquitous prevalence of abuse and the potential for death from intraperitoneal bleeding, the prompt diagnosis and treatment of cocaine-induced disease including splenic rupture is essential. The management for splenic rupture from traumatic and atraumatic etiology has shifted from emergent laparotomy and splenectomy to non-operative approach with transcatheter splenic artery embolization. We report a 39-year-old male with a significant substance abuse history who presented with atraumatic splenic rupture. He was

Parenteral poppy seed tea packs a powerful punch.

Poppy seed tea (PST) has a long history of use for its medicinal (analgesic, anti-diarrhoeal, anxiolytic) effects. It is also commonly used as a recreational drug in its oral form throughout the world, but reports of intravenous use are very rare. We present two cases of intravenously injected PST with dramatic effects in order to create awareness among health professionals of this method of drug use and its potential complications, as well as to help clinicians dealing with opiate-dependent patients to warn them of the risk.

The Prevalence of Hepatitis B and C Among Prisoners in Kahramanmaras, Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are among the most important health issues in Turkey. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections are less frequently observed in the country. The individuals who had blood transfusions, patients undergoing hemodialysis, and intravenous drug addicted individuals, people who had tattoos/piercings, communal living environments, contamination of a family member, and prisoners are the main risk groups. OBJECTIVES: The current study aimed to discuss the prevalence and the genotypes of hepatitis and HIV infections among a

Searching for a Needle in a Haystack: Chemical Analysis Reveals Nitazenes Found in Drug Paraphernalia Residues.

INTRODUCTION: A group of synthetic opioids, the nitazenes, is appearing in the illicit drug market. Monitoring these novel psychoactive substances is challenging due to constantly evolving analogues and the small amounts of these potent drugs that are consumed. This study aimed to investigate the presence of nitazenes in drug paraphernalia in South Australia using sensitive and selective analytical methods. METHODS: Injecting drug paraphernalia samples were collected from needle and syringe programme sites in South Australia that offer disposal services. Chemical analysis using liquid chromat

Detection of drugs and hepatitis C virus in used syringes from a needle exchange in Gothenburg, Sweden.

People who inject drugs (PWID) are exposed to serious health risks such as lethal overdoses, addiction and infections. The patterns of drug use and the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection vary greatly between and even within countries. Data on drugs used for injection are important to inform PWID of risks and adapt healthcare. This study aimed to determine which substances are injected in Gothenburg, Sweden, and estimate the risk of HCV transmission. A total of 150 syringes handed in at the needle and syringe exchange program (NEP) in Gothenburg over a week in November 2021 were an

Factors associated with inability to access addiction treatment among people who inject drugs in Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Addiction treatment is an effective strategy used to reduce drug-related harm. In the wake of recent developments in novel addiction treatment modalities, we conducted a longitudinal data analysis to examine factors associated with inability to access addiction treatment among a prospective cohort of persons who inject drugs (PWID). METHODS: Data were derived from two prospective cohorts of PWID in Vancouver, Canada, between December 2005 and November 2013. Using multivariate generalized estimating equations, we examined factors associated with reporting an inability to access add

A gendered analysis of Canadian Aboriginal individuals admitted to inpatient substance abuse detoxification: a three-year medical chart review.

This study examined gender differences within a sample of Canadian Aboriginal individuals admitted to an inpatient, hospital-based substance abuse detoxification program. Even though alcohol was the most frequent primary drug of detoxification for both genders, women received proportionately higher rates of cocaine or opiate detoxification diagnoses. In addition to a younger age, females reported higher rates of physical and sexual abuse. Women were also administered antidepressants, antibiotic medication protocols, and more medical evaluation tests. It appears that Canadian Aboriginal women h

HIV/hepatitis C virus co-infection in drug users: risk behavior and prevention.

Studies of HIV-positive patients have consistently shown that drug users, in particular injection drug users (IDU), are far more likely to have hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection than other patient groups. HIV incidence and prevalence in IDU has declined in recent years, but HCV remains endemic in this population. HCV antibody prevalence among non-injection users of drugs such as heroin and cocaine is between 5 and 30%, although there are scant data on specific transmission risk behavior. The control of HIV/HCV co-infection must address HCV prevention. Epidemiological studies have suggested tha

"We want a living solution": views of harm reduction programs in black US Communities.

Illicit drug use in the US remains concerning, with injection drug use linked to transmission of blood-borne diseases as HIV/AIDS; persons of color, including Black Americans, experience disproportionately higher transmission rates. Harm reduction programs such as methadone and needle- and syringe-exchange (NEP/SEP) are empirically demonstrated to reduce HIV transmission, yet are believed largely opposed by Black communities. Using interview data from 21 service providers of substance abuse and related service organizations located in and/or serving predominantly populations of color, this stu

The Role of Context in Integrating Buprenorphine into a Drop-In Center in Kampala, Uganda, Using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research.

BACKGROUND: Although Africa has long borne the brunt of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic, until recently, the continent has been considered largely free of illicit drug use and injection drug use in particular. In Uganda, the number of people who use or inject drugs (PWUD and PWID, respectively) has increased, and PWID are a key population at high risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, harm reduction practices, including providing clean injection equipment and medication-assisted treatment (MAT), have only recently been pilote

Lifetime and past-month substance use and injection among street-based female sex workers in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Street-based female sex workers (FSWs) are highly at risk of HIV and other harms associated with sex work. We assessed the prevalence of non-injection and injection drug use and their associated factors among street-based FSWs in Iran. METHODS: We recruited 898 FSWs from 414 venues across 19 major cities in Iran between October 2016 and March 2017. Correlates of lifetime and past-month non-injection and injection drug use were assessed through multivariable logistic regression models. Adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were reported. RESULTS: Lifetime an
