Archival tissues, particularly formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumors, have become increasingly valuable in studies of the etiology of cancer. In non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, subclassification of tumors by immunophenotyping and identification of oncogenic viruses has allowed more accurate interpretation of associated epidemiological information. One such example is adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma, which is not a single histopathological entity and usually is associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus, type I. In addition to confirming the diagnosis, the pattern of virus distribution, utilized

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), and standard antiviral therapies are associated with significant side effects and development of drug-resistant mutants. Adoptively transferred donor-derived CMV-specific T cells (CMVSTs) can provide an alternative treatment modality with few side effects but are not widely available due to their patient-specific nature. Here we report the establishment and use of a bank of CMVSTs derived from just 8 CMV-seropositive donors, with HLA types representi

A cornea/tissue bank must have an organizational structure in which responsibility and authority to issue directives are clearly defined. It must also use a documented quality management system on the basis of good practice procedures which is maintained to the current standards. The personnel of a cornea/tissue bank must be present in sufficient numbers and be suitably qualified. A cornea/tissue bank must be in possession of appropriate facilities which are suitable for the main purpose of preparation of cryopreserved human amniotic membranes from donor placentas. All equipment must be design

BACKGROUND: The Japanese Orthopaedic Association Committee on Tissue Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine has conducted a nationwide survey of the status of bone grafting in Japan every 5 years from 1985. We report here the status of bone grafting from 2000 to 2004, show the trends in bone grafting from 1985 to 2004, and draw attention to the issues affecting banked bone allografts.
METHODS: Questionnaires devised by the Committee were sent to all educational and training hospitals (2239 institutions) approved by the Japanese Orthopaedic Association.
RESULTS: Survey responses were obtai

The scope of eye banking activities has been expanding with the advances and techniques of keratoplasty. With the popularity of descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) in the recent decade, there is a need to adopt the preparation of DMEK tissues in the eye banks. This necessitated surgical training of the eye bank technicians, development of infrastructure in the eye bank, innovative methods of graft preparation, and delivery for the surgery at distant surgery centers. Eye banks across various countries have devised and adopted different methods of providing DMEK grafts based on the

AIM: Corneal disorders-including degeneration, dystrophy, infection, and inflammation-rank as the fifth leading cause of global visual impairment. In developing regions, conditions such as trachoma and xerophthalmia further increase this burden. This review explores the current landscape, challenges, and advancements in corneal blindness management, with a focus on the role of eye banks and keratoplasty techniques.
OBJECTIVES: (i) Assess global burden and causes of corneal blindness; (ii) Highlight eye banks' roles in donor tissue management; (iii) Identify challenges in eye banking and trans

Neuropathological examination of the brain and its biochemical analyses are fundamental to neuroscience studies and public health decisions, but are dependent on the effectiveness of regulations and operational protocols. The article discusses opportunities and limits of Italian regulation on body donation in relation to the specific requirements of neuropathology and brain sciences, in comparison with the regulations of other countries. Some crucial issues emerge, widely shared in the various regulatory contexts. The main aspect is the willingness to donate, consciously expressed by the subje

Surgeons and the lay public have recently expressed concern over the safety of allogeneic dura as it relates to the transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. Indeed, two cases have resulted from use of tissue procured from a commercial agency that did not adhere to criteria accepted by the American Association of Tissue Banks or the Southeast Organ Procurement Foundation. This review discusses the risks and safety of allogeneic dura. The findings should reassure the surgeon of the safety of allogeneic dura when it is properly processed and catalogued by a bona fide, reputable tissue bank. To

To qualify for bone donation many criteria must be met. For procurement, two time intervals-a postmortem interval (PMI) of 6 h (hours) until cooling of the deceased and a maximum procurement time of tissues within 24/36 h postmortem are mandatory. Expanding the procurement to donors with a longer PMI would be helpful e.g. to have more time to contact relatives for consent for donation. A loss of biomechanical quality of bone tissues should not be expected in the PMI until procurement, but the question of microbiological contamination remains. Therefore, samples from the iliac crest were procur

A workshop in June 2005 ("Preventing Organ and Tissue Allograft-Transmitted Infection: Priorities for Public Health Intervention") identified gaps in organ and tissue safety in the US. Participants developed a series of allograft safety initiatives. "The Organ and Tissue Safety Workshop 2007: Advances and Challenges" assessed progress and identified priorities for future interventions. Awareness of the challenges of allograft-associated disease transmission has increased. The Transplantation Transmission Sentinel Network will enhance communication surrounding allograft-associated disease trans

Thumb reconstruction has been a very challenging issue for hand surgeons. In this report, we present a case of thumb reconstruction with combination of the wrap-around flap prefabricated by the medialis pedis perforator flap with phalanx and nail bed banked from the amputated thumb. A 22-year-old man suffered from the left thumb amputation as well as large soft tissue defect of hand and comminuted fracture in wrist due to a crush accident. The distal phalanx and nail bed of left thumb were exposed and no suitable vessels for microsurgical anastomosis could be found, resulting in the great diff

Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) is a form of corneal transplantation in which only a single cell layer, the corneal endothelium, along with its basement membrane (Descemet's membrane) is introduced onto the recipient's posterior stroma(3). Unlike Descemet's Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK), where additional donor stroma is introduced, no unnatural stroma-to-stroma interface is created. As a result, the natural anatomy of the cornea is preserved as much as possible allowing for improved recovery time and visual acuity(4). Endothelial Keratoplasty (EK) is
