Secreted extracellular matrix components which regulate craniofacial development could be reactivated and play roles in adult wound healing. We report a patient with a loss-of-function of the secreted matricellular protein SMOC2 (SPARC related modular calcium binding 2) presenting severe oligodontia, microdontia, tooth root deficiencies, alveolar bone hypoplasia, and a range of skeletal malformations. Turning to a mouse model, Smoc2-GFP reporter expression indicates SMOC2 dynamically marks a range of dental and bone progenitors. While germline Smoc2 homozygous mutants are viable, tooth number

External resorption is sequelae of necrotic periodontal membrane over a large area of root following an injury to the tooth. This usually occurs after severe dental injuries such as intrusion, severe luxations or exarticulation injuries complicated by a prolonged extra oral period. This case report presents a clinical and radiographic follow up (13 months) of treatment of inflammatory external root resorption on maxillary central incisor using Vitapex. Gradual healing of resorption was observed radiographically with no tenderness or pathological mobility.

External inflammatory root resorption (EIRR) is one of the most undesirable potential repercussions of various types of trauma and traumatic injuries to the tooth and its structure. This detrimental phenomenon may lead to severe complications, the consequent destruction of dental tissues, and eventual tooth loss. In the presented case, following the autogenous transplantation of tooth #17 as the host-tissue replacement for tooth #18, signs of EIRR were radiographically detected after 6 months. However, the thorough preparation of root canals, which involves complete cleaning and shaping, in ad

In the treatment of extrusive luxation cases, it is important that the repositioning of extruded tooth in the socket is done as soon as possible. If this does not occur, periapical clot becomes organized and makes replantation difficult reposition. In this article the patient referred to the Clinics for dental trauma sustaining extrusive luxation of the maxillary right central incisor. The patient reported having suffered a bicycle accident 12 days before, which caused traumatic tooth injuries. The repositioning was attempted without success and an alternative form of treatment was necessary t

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic dental injuries often affect the dental hard tissues, periodontal tissues, and dental pulp. Root resorption (RR) is a significantly concerning phenomenon that could lead to loss of the traumatized tooth. The purpose of this systematic review was to analyze the incidences of different types of RR after concussion, subluxation, lateral luxation, intrusive luxation, and extrusive luxation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seven databases were electronically and manually searched for the identification of observational studies that evaluated the incidence of RR after luxation injuries.

Injuries to anterior teeth of children seem to be increasing. After conducting a thorough examination it is useful to classify the injury as a guide to treatment. Injury can be classified as crown fracture, crown-root fracture, root fracture, subluxation or loosening of the tooth, luxation or dislocation and, finally, exarticulation. The appropriate form of treatment for each class of injury is discussed and an indication of the expected success rate is given. Absence of a positive response to vitality tests is not by itself sufficient to warrant a diagnosis of pulp necrosis. It must be suppor

Sport-related orofacial trauma is a common occurrence, particularly in contact sports and among young adults, necessitating effective emergency management. This article highlights the prevalence of these injuries and emphasises the importance of proactive planning, including athlete and staff education, establishment of emergency protocols, and ensuring access to dental expertise. Immediate and appropriate on-site management, guided by the International Association of Dental Trauma guidelines, is crucial for optimal outcomes, especially in cases of avulsion. Furthermore, the complexities surro

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic injury to the teeth can cause horizontal root fractures and inflammatory root resorptions (external and internal). Traditionally, traumatized teeth with horizontal root fractures resulting in pulp necrosis and inflammatory root resorptions are treated with conventional root canal therapy.
METHODS: A 15-year-old boy had a history of traumatic injury to mature tooth #8 resulting in horizontal root fracture and pulp necrosis of the coronal fragment. A 7-year-old girl suffered an avulsion injury to immature tooth #9, which developed inflammatory replacement resorption and

This case report highlights the importance of early detection and timely management of trauma-induced inflammatory root resorption (external inflammatory root resorption, EIR) following dental injuries. A nine-year-old boy presented with an extrusive luxation injury of teeth #11 and #21, accompanied by an uncomplicated crown fracture. Our proposed treatment plan was to opt for root canal treatment for both central incisors to prevent EIR; however, the patient's guardian opted for root canal treatment only for tooth #21 and to keep tooth #11 under observation, as it was vital at the time. Unfor

BACKGROUND: Avulsion is one of the most serious injuries of the tooth which is most commonly seen in young children and occurs in the upper front teeth. Immediate transplantation of the avulsed tooth is recommended treatment and results in good prognosis although this may not be always possible.
CASE REPORT: The present case highlights the 3-year follow-up of delayed replantation (after 15h) of maxillary central incisor which was avulsed due to trauma. The complications seen in the present case were ankylosis and inflammatory resorption, but clinically the tooth was asymptomatic and maintains

Tooth aspiration, while commonly linked to predisposing conditions such as loose teeth, facial surgeries, or injuries, can also affect patients without apparent risk factors. Such small foreign body aspirations may go undiagnosed for many months as patients often tolerate the symptoms, such as chronic cough. However, the protracted course of unaddressed foreign body aspiration has the potential to resemble symptoms of malignancy, including persistent hemoptysis, weight loss, and fatigue. In this report, we detail the case of a 51-year-old man with underlying chronic obstructive pulmonary disea

Traumatic injuries to the primary dentition are quite common. When primary teeth are subjected to trauma, force transmission and/or invasion of the underlying tooth germs lying in close proximity can result in a variety of disturbances in the permanent successors. Few of these disturbances include hypoplasia, dilaceration, or alteration in the eruption sequence and pattern. Dilaceration is defined as an angulation or sharp bend or curve in the linear relationship of the crown of a tooth to its root. A rare case of maxillary left central incisor having crown dilaceration and Vertucci's type II

Dental implants are one of the best valid tooth replacement options, though these are not always appropriate in growing young patients. Tooth autotransplantation can be indicated then. However, this is not the only scenario where dental transplantation can be indicated. This comprehensive literature review discusses a wide range of unusual indications of dental transplantation as reported throughout the medical literature. Surprisingly, these indications include management of some developmental dental anomalies, hypodontia, oroantral communications, alveolar clefts, deficient alveolar ridges,

Diagnosing tooth resorption is critical for effective management. Internal resorption is a rare phenomenon, presenting with a pathognomonic clinical sign of a "pink spot" in the crown. In case of infection-induced tooth resorption, endodontic therapy needs to be carried out to decrease bacterial load within the pulp space and facilitate repair of resorbed tooth structure. Following inflammation of the pulpal tissue, clastic cells infiltrate the pulp chamber along with physiological blood supply and thereby initiate the process of internal tooth resorption. Tooth resorption involves two phases:
