Trimester-Specific Blood Trihalomethane and Urinary Haloacetic Acid Concentrations and Adverse Birth Outcomes: Identifying Windows of Vulnerability during Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Some disinfection by-products (DBPs) are reproductive and developmental toxicants in laboratory animals. However, studies of trimester-specific DBP exposure on adverse birth outcomes in humans are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether trimester-specific blood and urinary biomarkers of DBP were associated with small for gestational age (SGA), low birth weight (LBW), and preterm birth. METHODS: A total of 4,086 blood and 3,951 urine samples were collected across pregnancy trimesters among 1,660 mothers from Xiaogan City, China. Blood samples were quantified for biomarkers of

Advanced treatment of urban wastewater by UV-C/free chlorine process: Micro-pollutants removal and effect of UV-C radiation on trihalomethanes formation.

The effect of the UV-C/free chlorine (FC) process on the removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from real urban wastewater as well as the effect of UV-C radiation on the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) compared to FC process alone was investigated. Unlike of FC process, UV-C/FC was really effective in the degradation of the target CECs (carbamazepine (CBZ), diclofenac, sulfamethoxazole and imidacloprid) in real wastewater (87% degradation of total CECs within 60 min, QUVC = 1.33 kJ L-1), being CBZ the most refractory one (49.5%, after 60 min). The UV-C radiation significantly a

A New Method for the Fast Analysis of Trihalomethanes in Tap and Recycled Waters Using Headspace Gas Chromatography with Micro-Electron Capture Detection.

Chemical disinfection of water supplies brings significant public health benefits by reducing microbial contamination. The process can however, result in the formation of toxic compounds through interactions between disinfectants and organic material in the source water. These new compounds are termed disinfection by-products (DBPs). The most common are the trihalomethanes (THMs) such as trichloromethane (chloroform), dichlorobromomethane, chlorodibromomethane and tribromomethane (bromoform); these are commonly reported as a single value for total trihalomethanes (TTHMs). Analysis of DBPs is c

Pilot Test on Pre-Swim Hygiene as a Factor Limiting Trihalomethane Precursors in Pool Water by Reducing Organic Matter in an Operational Facility.

Pool water must be constantly disinfected. Chlorine compounds used to disinfect pools react with organic substances such as sweat, urine, and personal care products introduced into pool water by users and results in the formation of disinfection byproducts. Trihalomethanes (THM), including chloroform and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, were quantified using a two-stage process: determining initial THM and chloroform levels; then searching for a cheap and easy-to-use method to improve water quality. The method proposed here to limit THM and DOC concentrations in water is controll

NOM fractionation by HPSEC-DAD-OCD for predicting trihalomethane disinfection by-product formation potential in full-scale drinking water treatment plants.

Chlorination is a common method for water disinfection; however, it leads to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), which are undesirable toxic pollutants. To prevent their formation, it is crucial to understand the reactivity of natural organic matter (NOM), which is considered a dominant precursor of DBPs. We propose a novel size exclusion chromatography (SEC) approach to evaluate NOM reactivity and the formation potential of total trihalomethanes-formation potentials (tTHMs-FP) and four regulated species (i.e. CHCl3, CHBrCl2, CHBr2Cl, and CHBr3). This method combines enhanced SEC

Disinfection performance of mixed oxidant, NaClO, and Ca(ClO)2 in anaerobic effluents: effects on microbial quality, physicochemical properties, and trihalomethane formation.

The disinfectant action of the mixed oxidants (MIOXs) was compared with that of sodium and calcium hypochlorite (NaClO and Ca(ClO)2) in the post-treatment of anaerobic effluent. The following responses were evaluated: microbiological reduction (total coliforms and Escherichia coli); disinfection byproducts formation (total trihalomethanes-THM4, i.e., the sum of chloroform (TCM), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), and bromoform (TBM); and changes in physicochemical parameters: pH, temperature, redox potential, conductivity, chemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen (N-NH4+

Thyroid Function Effects of Mixed Exposure to Urinary Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic Acids: Based on an Integrated Framework of Exposure Assessment, Qualitative Association, and Quantitative Attribution.

Toxicological studies have demonstrated that disinfection byproducts (DBPs) can disrupt thyroid function; however, human epidemiological evidence remains limited. The existing studies focus on a limited number of compounds and lack detailed investigation of mixed exposure effects. To address these gaps, we developed a three-tier analytical approach that includes exposure assessment, qualitative association, and quantitative attribution. A total of 435 community-dwelling adults in Shanghai, China, were enrolled, and urinary concentrations of 16 DBPs, including halomethanes (HMs) and haloacetic

Subchronic Exposure to Regulated Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic Acids: Do We Need to Refine Our Exposure Assessment? A Full-Scale Case Study in a Canadian Municipality.

Regulated disinfection byproducts (e.g., trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids) in drinking water networks fluctuate spatially and temporally, depending on water sources and treatment practices with higher concentrations during the summer. Trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids monitoring is based on yearly averages of quarterly measurements with maximum acceptable concentrations where extensive monitoring of disinfection byproducts is not required during those months. Because of concerns that exposures of a short duration could result in adverse reproductive and developmental outcomes, it is vit

Comparison of iodinated trihalomethanes formation during aqueous chlor(am)ination of different iodinated X-ray contrast media compounds in the presence of natural organic matter.

Iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs) formation during chlorination and chloramination of five iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM) compounds (iopamidol, iopromide, iodixanol, histodenz, and diatrizoate) in the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) was evaluated and compared. Chlorination and chloramination of ICM in the absence of NOM yielded only a trace amount of I-THMs, while levels of I-THMs were enhanced substantially in raw water samples. With the presence of NOM, the order with respect to the maximum yield of I-THMs observed during chlorination was iopamidol >> histodenz > iodixanol >

Systemic Inflammation Mediates the Association Between Blood Trihalomethane Concentrations and Cardiovascular Disease in U.S. Individuals Over 45: Insights from NHANES 2005-2012.

Trihalomethanes (THMs), the major byproducts of water chlorination which are associated with various adverse health outcomes. However, the relationship of THMs with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in aging populations remains underexplored. We analyzed data from 5,400 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2012. Associations between blood THM concentrations and CVD were evaluated using weighted multivariable logistic regression. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression was applied to identify the most relevant THM components. We also performed mediation a

Investigating bromide incorporation factor (BIF) and model development for predicting THMs in drinking water using machine learning.

Many disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water can pose cancer risks to humans while several DBPs including trihalomethanes are typically regulated. Although trihalomethanes are regulated, brominated fractions (bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane and bromoform) are more toxic to humans than the chlorinated ones (chloroform). To date, >100 models have been reported to predict DBPs. However, models to predict individual trihalomethanes are very limited, indicating the needs of such models. Various factors including natural organic matter (NOM), bromide ions (Br-), disinfectants (e.

The effect of disinfection by-products and mutagenic activity on birth weight and gestational duration.

Epidemiologic studies of disinfection by-products have traditionally focused on total trihalomethane (TTHM) concentration as a surrogate for maternal exposure during pregnancy. We used birth certificate data on 196,000 infants to examine the effect of third-trimester exposures on various indices of fetal development. We examined the effect of town-average concentrations of TTHM and additional exposure metrics in relation to mean birth weight, mean gestational age, small for gestational age (SGA) infancy, and preterm delivery. Trihalomethane data (TTHM, chloroform, and bromodichloromethane) fro

Disinfection byproducts in US drinking water and cancer mortality.

Trihalomethanes, the main drinking water disinfection byproducts, may be carcinogenic and are regulated to amaximum total trihalomethanes (TTHM) of 80 µg/l in the US. We aimed to determine whether total and individual trihalomethanes in drinking water across the US are associated with higher cancer mortality in 6,260 adult participants to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 1999 to 2008 followed for mortality until 2019 (median: 14.4 years). At baseline, the geometric mean (standard error) of TTHM in drinking water was 9.61 (0.85) µg/l. During follow-up, 873 deaths occur

[Factor Analysis of Disinfection Byproduct Formation in Drinking Water Distribution Systems Through the Bayesian Network].

Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water distribution systems are affected by multi-factors, such as basic water quality parameters, microbial community structures, and residual organic pollutants that cannot be removed by the water treatment process. The relationship between the above-mentioned factors that forms a complicated network structure, which causes the dominating factor that affects DBPs formation unclear. This study investigated the water quality in regional tap water in January-February 2021. Trihalomethanes were determined using P&T-GC-MS, and antibiotics and nitrosamines

Treatment: improvement or deterioration of water quality?

The formation of trihalomethanes through chlorination has shown very clearly that water treatment processes may adversely affect water quality. There are many more examples of such effects, including the following which are discussed in detail: 1. Formation of organohalogen compounds in addition to trihalomethanes by chlorination and other oxidation processes. 2. Formation of more polar, more biodegradable organics by ozonation for example, and the consequent increase in bacterial growth in the distribution system. 3. Formation and removal of organic and inorganic corrosion inhibitors by treat
