BACKGROUND: Intratympanic membrane cholesteatoma presents as an asymptomatic, white, round mass on the tympanic membrane, and is usually detected incidentally in children.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old Korean boy visited our otorhinolaryngology clinic for a whitish mass on the right tympanic membrane. He had a history of traumatic tympanic membrane perforation in the right ear that had occurred 1 year prior, which had healed well with a paper patch placement. The mass was completely removed under local anesthesia during surgery with a microscope. The mass was on the outer epithelial layer

Vascular tumors arising in the temporal bone represent 0.7% of all lesions in this area. Hemangiomas confined to the tympanic membrane are exceptionally rare. We report a new case of tympanic membrane hemangioma that arose in 59-year-old man who presented with a 2-month history of constant right-sided pulsatile tinnitus and associated neck discomfort. The lesion and a cuff of healthy tympanic membrane were excised, and the resulting defect was repaired with a temporalis fascia graft. At 3 months, the neotympanum was well healed and the patient's symptoms had resolved. We also review the limite

BACKGROUND: The tympano-mallear connection (TMC) is the soft-tissue connection between the tympanic membrane (TM) and the manubrium of the malleus. Some studies suggest that its mechanical properties may have a substantial influence on the mechanics and transfer function of the middle ear. However, relatively little is known about the dimensions of the TMC and its variability among individuals.
METHOD: Thirteen samples were collected from human temporal bones, consisting of only the malleus and the TM. They were imaged using μCT without contrast enhancing agent. From the μCT images, the TMC d

This study shows that the mucocutaneous junction of a perforation of the tympanic membrane may be located at the margin, in the middle ear, or in the ear canal. It is incumbent upon the surgeon performing myringoplasty to identify this junction in order to optimize the success of surgery. About one-third of the healed area following perforation has an intermediate fibrous layer. The membranes in 2 cases of myringoplasty evidenced thicker-than-normal intermediate layers.

Tympanic membrane perforation (TMP), a common disease, often needs a scaffold as the patch to support surgery. Due to the environment of auditory meatus, the patch can be infected by bacteria that results in failure; therefore, the ideal scaffold may combine biomimetic and antibacterial features. In this work, gelatin was used as the electrospinning framework, genipin as the crosslinking agent, and levofloxacin as an antibacterial in order to prepare the scaffold for TMP. Different contents of levofloxacin have been added to gelatin/genipin. It was found that, with the addition of levofloxacin

Two cases of a membranous band between the tympanic membrane and the external auditory canal are presented. These characteristic structures are rare, but observed in several first branchial cleft anomalies. Neither patient presented with an infection. In Case 1, an eleven-year-old girl has this structure in her right ear. In Case 2, a thirteen-year-old boy has this structure in his left ear. Both patients demonstrated slight air-bone gaps in the affected ear with a pure-tone audiometric test, due to limited vibrations of the tympanic membrane.

BACKGROUND: The reconstruction of anterior or subtotal tympanic membrane perforations is critical due to the risk of anterior graft medialisation and retraction or recurrent perforation.
METHOD: After reconstruction of the tympanic membrane by means of grafting, a rectangular cartilage strut (length 6 mm, breadth 2 mm, thickness 0.1 mm) is prepared using a cartilage knife and scalpel. This strut graft is placed between the cartilage graft and the promontory in the anterior inferior part of the middle ear cavity.
CONCLUSION: Our experience shows that using a U-shaped cartilage strut to sustai

INTRODUCTION: The acoustic reflex is the active response of the middle ear to loud sounds, altering the mechanical transfer function of the acoustic energy into the inner ear. Our goal was to observe the effect of the acoustic reflex on the tympanic membrane by identifying a significant nonlinear increase in membrane oscillations.
METHODS: By using interferometric spectrally encoded endoscopy, we record the membrane oscillations over time in response to a loud, 200-ms-long acoustic stimulus.
RESULTS: A gradual reflex activation is measured between approximately 40 and 100 ms, manifested as a

HYPOTHESIS: Tetracyclines are less cytotoxic to tympanic membrane (TM) fibroblasts than quinolones.
BACKGROUND: Use of quinolone ear drops after tympanostomy tube placement and for acute otitis externa has been linked to an increased risk of TM perforation. This has been verified in animal models. Cell culture studies have shown quinolones to be highly toxic to TM fibroblasts. Tetracyclines are a potential alternative to quinolones as they have been used to treat acute otitis externa and are thought to be nontoxic to the inner ear. We aimed to determine if tetracyclines are cytotoxic to TM fi

Tympanic membrane perforation is a common disease in otolaryngology, manifested as hearing loss, chronic infection, and often caused by middle ear trauma and infection. Choosing suitable repair materials to repair the perforation of the tympanic membrane is to achieve the purpose of improving the hearing of the patient and improving the discharge of pus. Autologous tissues, such as tragus perichondrium, temporal muscle fascia, tragus cartilage, fat, etc., are commonly used in clinical repair materials, and other materials include foreign bodies and allogeneic materials. Others include foreign

The tympanic membrane (TM) transfers sound waves from the air into mechanical motion for the ossicular chain. This requires a high sensitivity to small dynamic pressure changes and resistance to large quasi-static pressure differences. The TM achieves this by providing a layered structure of about 100µm in thickness, a low flexural stiffness, and a high tensile strength. Chronically infected middle ears require reconstruction of a large area of the TM. However, current clinical treatment can cause a reduction in hearing. With the novel additive manufacturing technique of melt electrowriting (M

Aspergillus niger is one of more than 340 different species belonging to the filamentous fungal genus Aspergillus. Aspergillosis can present with a wide range of clinical syndromes, and it results in significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Here we described a rare case of the left central tympanic membrane perforation secondary to Aspergillus niger otomycosis. The patient underwent tympanoplasty with good improvement.

Anterior tympanic membrane perforations constitute a surgical challenge because of the anatomy of the anterior wall of the external auditory canal and the specific physical properties of the anterior tympanic membrane. The author reports an endoscopic transcanal myringoplasty technique with anterior fixation of the graft onto the anterior wall of the external auditory canal, avoiding canaloplasty in the majority of cases, detachment of the annulus in the anterior angle and medialization of the graft in the middle ear.

OBJECTIVE: To determine incidence and characteristics of traumatic Tympanic Membrane perforation in a tertiary care hospital.
METHODS: This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted at the Department of ENT, MTI/LRH, Peshawar from August to December 2017. After well informed consent a detailed history was taken; thorough examination of ENT was carried out. Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) of all included patients was performed by same senior audiometrician. The data were collected on predesigned proforma and were analyzed using SPSS (16 version.
RESULTS: This study included 48 patients; Male
