Effects of low frequency ultrasonic treatment on the maturation of steeped greengage wine.

To accelerate wine maturation, low frequency ultrasonic waves of 28 kHz and 45 kHz were used to treat the steeped greengage wine. The contents of total acid, total ester, fusel oils and the wine chromaticity were determined before and after the ultrasonic treatment. The volatile compounds were analysed by GC-MS method, and the sensory quality was evaluated by panelist. The results indicated that ultrasonic treatment of the steeped greengage wine at 45 kHz 360 W for 30 min was effective to accelerate the aging process, where the fusel oils and alcohol compounds were significantly reduced and ac

Temperature-controlled MPa-pressure ultrasonic cell manipulation in a microfluidic chip.

We study the temperature-independent impact on cell viability of relevant physical parameters during long-term, high-acoustic-pressure ultrasonic exposure in a microfluidic chip designed for ultrasonic-standing-wave trapping and aggregation of cells. We use a light-intensity method and 5 μm polymer beads for accurate acoustic pressure calibration before injecting cells into the device, and we monitor the viability of A549 lung cancer cells trapped during one hour in an ultrasonic standing wave with 1 MPa pressure amplitude. The microfluidic chip is actuated by a novel temperature-controlled ul

Inactivation of filter bound aerosolized MS2 bacteriophages using a non-conductive ultrasound transducer.

The inactivation of viruses that retain their infectivity when transmitted through the air is challenging. To address this issue, this study used a non-contact ultrasound transducer (NCUT) to generate shock waves in the air at specific distances, input voltages, and exposure durations, targeting bacteriophage virus aerosols captured on to H14 HEPA filters. Initially, a frequency of 27.56 kHz (50V) at 25-mm distance was used, which yielded an inactivation efficiency of up to 32.69 ± 12.10%. Other frequencies at shorter distances were investigated, where 29.10 kHz had the highest inactivation ef

Ultrasound and shock-wave stimulation to promote axonal regeneration following nerve surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis of preclinical studies.

Limited regeneration after nerve injury often leads to delayed or incomplete reinnervation and consequently insufficient muscle function. Following nerve surgery, application of low-intensity ultrasound or extracorporeal shock waves may promote nerve regeneration and improve functional outcomes. Because currently clinical data is unavailable, we performed a meta-analysis following the PRISMA-guidelines to investigate the therapeutic effect of ultrasound and shock wave therapies on motor nerve regeneration. Ten ultrasound-studies (N = 445 rats) and three shock-wave studies (N = 110 rats) were i

Intravascular forward-looking ultrasound transducers for microbubble-mediated sonothrombolysis.

Effective removal or dissolution of large blood clots remains a challenge in clinical treatment of acute thrombo-occlusive diseases. Here we report the development of an intravascular microbubble-mediated sonothrombolysis device for improving thrombolytic rate and thus minimizing the required dose of thrombolytic drugs. We hypothesize that a sub-megahertz, forward-looking ultrasound transducer with an integrated microbubble injection tube is more advantageous for efficient thrombolysis by enhancing cavitation-induced microstreaming than the conventional high-frequency, side-looking, catheter-m

In situ assessment of cellular hydrogel swelling behaviors via microbubble‑induced ultrasonic resonance scattering.

Hydrogels exhibit stimuli-responsive swelling behaviors that are beneficial for biomedical applications including disease diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring. However, the current prevailing methods of assessing the swelling behaviors are inherently ex situ, requiring the removal of hydrogels from their operating environment. This has hindered the use of hydrogels in continuous physiological monitoring contexts. Achieving reliable and in situ assessment of hydrogel swelling is essential yet remains a challenge. Here, we present a new monitoring strategy that exploits resonance scattering of u

High-fidelity transcranial ultrasound multi-focal stimulation via physics-aware hologram technique.

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) is an emerging non-invasive neuromodulation modality that offers deep brain access with high spatial precision. However, its broader application is limited by the difficulty of reliably generating complex transcranial acoustic fields, particularly for multi-target stimulation through the skull. These limitations can lead to focal distortion, off-target exposure, and reduced reliability of neuromodulation outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, we introduce a physics-aware thickness-only acoustic hologram (TOAH) technique for precise trans

Development of acoustic systems for ultrasound attenuation measurement in polydimethylsiloxane.

Ultrasound absorption by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) can have a significant impact on the acoustic radiation force needed for the stimulation of cells in an organ-on-a-chip. Hence, finding the PDMS attenuation coefficient is the key to determining the fraction of absorbed acoustic energy in microfluidic systems. To measure the attenuation coefficient of PDMS, two methods were compared: a vector network analyzer and a pulse transmission method. Ten PDMS samples with thicknesses ranging from 2.5 to 18.5 mm were tested both before and after 24 h water immersion. The attenuation coefficient of PDM

Impact of ultrasound-assisted single washing process on tilapia mince: Biochemical changes, structural modifications, and gel formation.

Ultrasound (US)-assisted single washing was applied to reduce water usage in tilapia mince washing during surimi production. The mince-to-water ratio of 1:2 in US-assisted washing was compared with ratios of 1:2 and 1:3 in conventional washing (CW-2 and CW-3, respectively). Screening of US power revealed the greatest effect at an intensity of 3.19 W/cm2 on mince whiteness (p < 0.05), without damage to protein polypeptide chains, and no extensive biochemical changes. Subsequently, the mince was subjected to various US exposure times of 1, 3, and 5 min (US-1, US-3, and US-5, respectively) at 3.1

An adjustable three-layer skull phantom with realistic ultrasound transmission properties.

Transcranial ultrasound research has garnered significant attention due to its non-invasive nature, absence of ionizing radiation, and portability, making it advantageous for both imaging and therapy. A critical aspect of advancing transcranial research lies in understanding the ultrasound transmission performance of the human skull. However, inherent variations in skull shape, physical parameters, and age-related changes pose challenges for comparative studies. To address these challenges, we designed a three-layer structured skull (TSS) phantom that closely mimics the structural and ultrasou

Effects of focused ultrasound stimulation on various in vitro neurological cell models.

Focused ultrasound stimulation (FUS) is rapidly gaining attention as a non-invasive and highly precise neuromodulatory technique with broad therapeutic potential in neurological and psychiatric disorders. While most reviews to date have emphasized in vivo and clinical studies, the cellular mechanisms underlying FUS remain underexplored. This study presents an innovative and thorough synthesis of FUS effects in in vitro neurological cell models, including SH-SY5Y, PC12, BV2 microglia, NSC-34 motor neurons, and human iPSC-derived neurons and astrocytes. These models offer essential insights into

Transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation enhances cerebrospinal fluid movement: Real-time in vivo two-photon and widefield imaging evidence.

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow is crucial for brain homeostasis and its dysfunction is highly associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Restoring CSF circulation is proposed as a key strategy for the treatment of the diseases. Among the methods to improve CSF circulation, focused ultrasound (FUS) stimulation has emerged as a promising non-invasive brain stimulation technique, with effectiveness evidenced by ex vivo studies. However, due to technical disturbances in in vivo imaging combined with FUS, direct evidence of real-time in vivo CSF flow enhancement by FUS remains elusive.

Laboratory batch experiments of the combined effects of ultrasound and air stripping in removing CCl4 and 1,1,1-TCA from water.

Ultrasonic and air-stripping techniques for removal of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA) from water were studied in batch experiments. Ultrasound (US) is effective for destroying organic compounds in aqueous solutions whereas air stripping (AS) efficiently transfers volatile compounds from the liquid to the gas phase. In simultaneous US and AS experiments, synergistic effects were observed and attributed to the effect of US on the mass transfer process. Using a photographic method, ultrasonic break up of gas bubbles and changes in gas holdup ratios were examined

Deep Eutectic Solvent-Assisted Ultrasonic Extraction of Anthocyanins from Blueberry Pomace: Optimization, Mechanistic Insights and In Vitro Antioxidant Activity.

This study explores an innovative approach based on deep eutectic solvent (DES)-synergistic ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) of anthocyanins from blueberry pomace (BP). Choline chloride-lactic acid (ChCl-LA, 1:2) was identified as the most efficient DES and provided the highest anthocyanin recovery. The optimal conditions for ChCl-LA-synergistic UAE (ChCl-LA-UAE) were obtained as follows: ultrasonic power of 270 W, extraction time of 30 min, liquid-to-solid ratio of 35:1, and water content in ChCl-LA of 40%, achieving a total anthocyanin content (TAC) of 3.5168 mg/g, with R2 = 0.9860. The use of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound for the treatment of established nonunion fractures: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Systematic reviews on low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) in nonunion fractures report a positive effect on healing. The quality of evidence is, however, limited as it is mostly based on observational studies. The literature on LIPUS in nonunion fractures has grown considerably over the past years. We aimed to conduct an up-to-date systematic review and meta-analysis of the evidence on the effect of LIPUS on healing rate and time in established nonunion fractures. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in Medline, CINAHL, Embase, and Web of Science, from their inception to

Ultrasonic separation of electrode scrap in water: a sustainable method for Li-ion battery recycling.

This study investigates a water-based ultrasonic treatment as a pretreatment method for the direct recycling of electrode scrap generated in lithium-ion battery manufacturing. As production scales up to meet growing demand, such scrap is increasingly generated, and its active materials are less degraded than those in used batteries, making it well-suited for direct recycling. The focus of this work is on the separation of cathode materials, which contain valuable and scarce metals and are typically bound with organic-insoluble binders that resist water-based removal. In contrast, anode materia

Ultrasound-responsive liposomes: A mechanistic framework to decode the effects of acoustic parameters.

Ultrasound offers a noninvasive, clinically relevant means to achieve precise spatiotemporal control of cargo release from ultrasound-responsive drug delivery systems within deep tissues. This approach enables targeted delivery of therapeutic agents, enhancing efficacy while minimizing systemic toxicity. While previous studies show that release from ultrasound-responsive liposomes depends on acoustic parameters, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. A deeper mechanistic understanding is essential to achieve precision over release and maximize therapeutic outcomes. To address this, we propo
