Vestibular Event Monitoring in the Community and Emergency Room.

Patients who are experiencing an attack of acute vertigo often demonstrate nystagmus that could provide useful diagnostic clues that identify the underlying vestibular disorder. Such ictal nystagmus is encountered in primary care, emergency rooms and patients' home environments where methods of recording nystagmus (video nystagmography) are scarce. Investigators worldwide have endeavored to circumvent this difficulty by using novel service models or portable nystagmus recording devices. Here we describe the event-monitoring techniques used thus far and summarize the diagnostic information gath

A standardized test to document cataplexy.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Cataplexy is the pathognomonic symptom of narcolepsy type 1 (NT1). Since it is considered difficult to be directly observed or documented by clinicians, its diagnosis relies mainly on history taking. Our study aimed at testing the feasibility of a standardized video recording procedure under emotional stimulation to document cataplexy in the diagnostic work-up of suspected hypersomnia of central origin. PATIENTS/METHODS: Two-hundred-eight consecutive patients underwent the diagnostic work-up and reached the final diagnosis of NT1 (n = 133), idiopathic hypersomnia or narc

In-person vs video hookup instructions: a comparison of home sleep apnea testing quality.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in the general population makes diagnosing OSA a high priority. Typically, patients receive in-person instructions to hook up the home sleep apnea test devices. Using recorded video instructions would save health care personnel time and improve access to OSA diagnostics for patients in remote areas. The aim of this study was to compare the quality of home sleep apnea test recordings when using in-person and video hookup instructions in a randomized study. METHODS: A total of 100 patients aged 18 to 70 years with suspected

The Rush Video-Based Tic Rating Scale-Revised: A Practice-Oriented Revision.

BACKGROUND: The Modified Rush Video-Based Tic Rating Scale (MRVS) is the most widely used video-based scale for assessing tic severity in patients with Tourette syndrome (TS). However, shortcomings of the MRVS, including a lack of clear instructions, a time-consuming recording procedure, and weak correlations with the gold standard for tic assessment, the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale-Total Tic Score (YGTSS-TTS), limits its use in research settings, although video assessments are generally considered objective, reliable, and time-saving measurements. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to revise the MRVS (

SurgViVQA: temporally grounded video question answering for surgical scene understanding.

PURPOSE: Video question answering (VideoQA) in the surgical domain aims to enhance intraoperative understanding by enabling AI models to reason over temporally coherent events rather than isolated frames. Current approaches are limited to static image features, and available datasets often lack temporal annotations, ignoring the dynamics critical for accurate procedural interpretation. METHODS: We propose SurgViVQA, a surgical VideoQA model that extends visual reasoning from static images to dynamic surgical scenes. It uses a Masked Video-Text Encoder to fuse video and question features, capt

Use of video laryngoscopy and camera phones to communicate progression of laryngeal edema in assessing for extubation: a case series.

Video laryngoscopy has demonstrated utility in airway management. For the present case series, we report the use of video laryngoscopy to evaluate the airway of critically ill, mechanically ventilated patients, as a means to reduce the risk of immediate postextubation stridor by assessing the degree of laryngeal edema. We also describe the use of cellular phone cameras to document and communicate airway edema in using video laryngoscopy for the patients' medical records. We found video laryngoscopy to be an effective method of assessing airway edema, and cellular phone cameras were useful for

Developmental EEG hallmark or biological artifact? Glossokinetic artifact mimicking anterior slow dysrhythmia in two full term newborns.

The aim of this paper is to describe an uncommon physiological EEG artifact in newborns caused by tongue movements (TM), mimicking anterior slow dysrhythmia (ASD). The subjects are two full-term newborns (39 weeks gestational age (GA)), admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for respiratory distress. Both underwent polygraphic video-EEG recording in order to better characterize tremor-like movements of all four limbs that appeared 48 hours after birth. Multichannel video-EEG polygraphy was performed using the 10-20 electrode montage modified for neonates. Ninety minutes of EEG was record

Gastaut type idiopathic childhood occipital epilepsy.

Gastaut type idiopathic childhood occipital epilepsy is an uncommon epileptic syndrome characterised by frequent seizures, most commonly presenting as elementary visual hallucinations or blindness. Other occipital (non-visual) symptoms may also occur. Interictal EEG typically shows occipital paroxysms, often with fixation-off sensitivity. Ictal EEG is usually characterised by interruption by paroxysms and sudden appearance of low-voltage, occipital, fast rhythm and/or spikes. Despite well described clinical and EEG patterns, to our knowledge, there are very few reports in the literature with v

Sensing emotional valence and arousal dynamics through automated facial action unit analysis.

Information about the concordance between dynamic emotional experiences and objective signals is practically useful. Previous studies have shown that valence dynamics can be estimated by recording electrical activity from the muscles in the brows and cheeks. However, whether facial actions based on video data and analyzed without electrodes can be used for sensing emotion dynamics remains unknown. We investigated this issue by recording video of participants' faces and obtaining dynamic valence and arousal ratings while they observed emotional films. Action units (AUs) 04 (i.e., brow lowering)

Electrophysiological technical procedures.

The reliability of the interpretation of SEEG data depends entirely on the technical quality of the acquisition recording. Digitalization of data and the development of computer technology, over the last 20 years have transformed electrophysiological procedures. Recording equipment must be able to record concomitantly clinical events and brain electrical activity. Recording is carried out during wakefulness and sleep and with use of various activation methods (hyperventilation, intermittent photic stimulation). Intracerebral electrical stimulations (with low and high frequency) and the acquisi

Changes in frontal lobe activity with cognitive therapy for spider phobia.

Patients suffering from spider phobia were studied with measurement of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) when they were looking at a video recording of living spiders. Six patients were studied before and after cognitive psychotherapy with successful outcome in all cases. On each occasion rCBF was measured under 3 conditions: during rest, during exposure to a video recording of neutral nature scenery, and finally while the patient watched a recording of living spiders. The patients who managed to control their emotional reactions without panicking during spider exposure before treatment show

Advances in camera and video production technology supporting skull-face superimposition: A review.

Since the 1980s, advances in camera and video production technology have been substantial. These changes hold relevance to camera-based methods of forensic video superimposition (VS). This especially applies to the last 20 years, where hardware changes have been rapid and provided new improved functionality. This paper reviews these video production advances across the last 40 years (with special attention to the last 20 years) and their impact on, and ramifications for, VS. While the technical advances do not magically resolve all of VS's limitations, such as specific requirements for antemor

Effect of phobic visual stimulation on spinal nociception.

To explore the role of strong negative emotions in spinal nociception, we evaluated the effect of fear-relevant videos of small animals on the nociceptive withdrawal reflex (NWR) and reflex-related pain perception in healthy subjects with a specific phobia of small animals. Twenty healthy subjects with a specific phobia of small animals diagnosed according to DSM-V criteria were included in this study. The NWR was evoked in the lower limb by stimulating the sural nerve and recording EMG activity in the biceps femoris. NWR pain-related perception was quantified on an 11-point numerical rating s
