Various nematodes, including onchocercids, can infect mustelids and canids. However, there are few records concerning pathogenesis in wildlife species. Diagnosis is made through microscopic observation of blood. Nevertheless, a specific onchocercid assignment is difficult to achieve. In this report, through morphological analysis of microfilariae and molecular characterization using the 18S, 12S, and COI genes, two cases of microfilarial infections were confirmed, Acanthocheilonema sp. infecting tayras (Eira barbara) and Dirofilaria sp. infecting crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous). Parasites within the host body can occupy similar ecological niches and, therefore, compete for resources. Similarly to macroecological environments, within-host habitats often provide unequal access to resources for different parasitic species. Parasites that live closer to the source of nutrients likely "intercept" resources, thus inhibiting the growth of "downstream" competitors. The eyes of vertebrates are an example of such asymmetric habitats, as lenses have priority access to nutrients over the vitreous humor. However, parasitic interactions in asymmetric environments have been rarely p

We analyzed 104 labial and lingual projections of Harting's vole (Microtus hartingi) mandibles using linear and geometric morphometrics. Incisor and molar overgrowth and mandibular deformations were described in 2 Harting's vole populations. Over a 6-year research period, excessive incisor growth was observed in 15.4% of the Rhodopean M. hartingi population and in 10.3% of the Central Anatolian form M. h. ankaraensis. Maxillary incisors lengthening up to 2.3× the norm was noted, often accompanied by mandibular incisor shortening. Nevertheless, voles with overgrown incisors were able to feed an

The flexibility of digestive tract morphology and the composition of gut microbiota play crucial roles in the environmental adaptation of reptiles. To evaluate the contributions of the dietary niches to the gut microbiota, we performed 16S rDNA sequencing and metabolite profiling for three sympatric lizard species-Teratoscincus roborowskii, Phrynocephalus axillaris, and Eremias roborowskii-and compared their goblet cell and enzyme activities of the digestive tract. The results revealed that goblet cell densities in the stomach body and pylorus were significantly higher in both T. roborowskii a

Tularemia, a zoonosis caused by Francisella tularensis, is considered endemic to the Balkan Peninsula. The main reservoirs of this disease are rodents and lagomorphs, which usually show no clinical signs and are a potential disease source for other animals and humans. The presence of F. tularensis in the tissues of rodents in Serbia was examined for the first time. The animals were collected near walking tracks and places for recreation in forest areas in Belgrade. A total of 96 mice were collected in three forest locations in the autumn of 2023. Tissue samples of lungs, liver, spleen, and kid

Bird parasites belonging to the genus Plasmodium (Haemosporida: Plasmodiidae) are found worldwide, with over 50 described species categorized into five subgenera. The subgenus Novyella comprises 22 morphologically identified species, of which 59% are genetically associated with at least one haplotype. In the Americas, only three morphospecies have their microscopic characteristics linked to a molecular signature. In this study, we described a new species of Plasmodium (Novyella) infecting a white-shouldered fire-eye (Pyriglena leucoptera) in Brazil. Molecular analysis reveals that the new spec

Parasite distributions are under the influence of host occurrence and tolerable environmental conditions. In vector-borne disease systems, including avian malaria, they are further constrained by the environmental niche of the vectors. The fact that avian haemosporidians occur in a large number of migratory and non-migratory species means the role of bird migration in the global distribution of avian haemosporidians is an open question. Because avian haemosporidians refer to a large number of genetic lineages that are well characterized in terms of host and geographic range, we introduce an ec

Avian haemosporidian infections have been associated with disease outbreaks in zoos and rehabilitation centers globally. This study aimed to determine the occurrence and genetic diversity of avian haemosporidian parasites in captive birds at the National Zoological Garden in South Africa. One hundred and eighty-three blood samples from five orders and 15 species of captive flamingos, vultures, owls, ibises and parrots were analyzed for haemosporidia by nested polymerase chain reaction assays. The samples were collected as part of the zoo's studbook and archived at South African National Biodiv

Research on the feeding preference of mosquitoes and the malaria parasites they transmit to vertebrate hosts is crucial for understanding the host-vector-parasite relationships in this complex system. In order to contribute to the growing data on these associations, and focusing on avian malaria, we collected mosquitoes at regular intervals between April and October for 2 years (2017 and 2019) in a deciduous forest and reedbeds. Collected engorged mosquitoes were identified morphologically. Total DNA was extracted from the abdomen and head-thorax parts of the vectors and was used to identify b

Avian haemosporidian parasites, such as Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, and Plasmodium are transmitted by blood-sucking insects and can negatively affect their host. These parasites have specific life cycles that allow them to survive and spread efficiently through their vectors. However, the research on vectors and their feeding preferences are scarce. Therefore, in this study, we investigated haemosporidian parasite vectors and their feeding preferences in insects collected at birds of prey nests. To catch the vectors, UV-light traps were hung at the nests of birds of prey between June and July

Parasitism can play a key role in shaping species' adaptability to environmental changes. Understanding how intrinsic traits of bird species influence susceptibility to haemosporidian infection is critical for understanding host-parasite dynamics, especially in biodiverse tropical regions. This study aimed to determine the host traits that influence the probability of haemosporidian infection in birds in a tropical country. We compiled published haemosporidian diagnoses of birds from Colombia and data on ecological, morphological, coloration, and sexual selection (dimorphism and dichromatism)

Haemoproteus Kruse, 1890 (Haemosporida: Haemoproteiidae) parasites are known for their high genetic diversity, avian host-specificity, and wide geographical distribution. Currently, 2019 lineages are registered as Haemoproteus species, but only 160 of them have been linked to morphospecies. Two main open access and independent databases are used to compile genetic, geographical, and host information on Haemoproteus parasites: GenBank and MalAvi. However, the data registered are not integrated, representing an obstacle in investigating Haemoproteus parasites. Here, we review all reported avian

Parasitic infections remain major global health challenges, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Although traditional vaccines have made significant progress against parasites, limited success has been obtained due to the parasites' complex life cycles and immune evasion. Nanoparticle-based vaccines, including mRNA-lipid particles, polymeric particles, and virus-like particles (VLPs), offer a promising alternative, showing improved immunogenicity in trials. In this study, the recent advancements in nanoparticle-based vaccines for parasitic infections and the roles of various types

BACKGROUND: Leptospira are endemic and cause disease among California sea lions (Zalophus californianus), but the epidemiology of Leptospira in Galapagos sea lions (Z. wollebaeki) is almost completely unknown. Understanding the presence and circulation of this zoonotic pathogen is essential not only for the conservation of Galapagos sea lions, but also for assessing potential health risks to humans and other animals within the Galapagos archipelago. This study fills knowledge gaps by investigating Leptospira in this endemic host species to provide valuable insights into the dynamics of the pat

Trypanosomes constitute a group of hemoflagellates that can infect many vertebrate species ranging from fish to humans. Most of the detailed studies are focused on mammalian trypanosomes of medical and veterinary importance. Although variations in cell cycle progression have been elucidated in mammalian trypanosomes, details of these processes remain elusive in other vertebrate trypanosomes. To address this, we established an in vitro culture and an in vivo fish model in tilapia to understand the cell morphology and cell division events of Trypanosoma epinepheli. The doubling time of T. epinep

BACKGROUND: Our research is the first to explore the ultrastructural features of the lingual papillary system of Arab Zebu cattle, highlighting their Chadian environmental adaptations.
RESULTS: There were two types of papillary systems: gustatory (fungiform and circumvallate) and mechanical (filiform, conical, and lentiform). The dorsal surface of the apex and rostral parts of the body had well-developed filiform papillae, whereas the tip's surface had mucosal folds, tubercles, and few filiform papillae. The torus lingua's dorsal surface displayed few lentiform papillae, while two conical pap

Plateau zokor (Eospalax baileyi) is a subterranean rodent and seasonal breeder. During the non-breeding season, the testicles regress, leading to the arrest of spermatogenesis and loss of fertility. The identification of the specific germ cell type at which spermatogenesis is arrested, as well as potential regulatory factors during the non-breeding season, is important for understanding seasonal spermatogenesis in subterranean species. This study analyzed genes in spermatocytes of plateau zokor by referring to single-cell RNA results in mice. We discovered that spermatogenesis is arrested at t

BACKGROUND: The deep-sea acorn worm Quatuoralisia malakhovi belongs to the phylum Hemichordata, class Enteropneusta, family Torquaratoridae, which was described in 2005. Owing to their epibenthic lifestyle and deep-sea habitat features, torquaratorids differ anatomically from shallow-water acorn worms; however, their morphology and fine structure are poorly studied. We have the opportunity to make three complete detailed series of histological sections of Q. malakhovi and to study the microscopic anatomy, histology and fine structure of the reproductive system of this acorn worm using scanning

The role of miRNAs in the regulation of seasonal reproduction in rodents, particularly in relation to photoperiod changes, is still poorly understood. Previous studies on miRNA transcriptomes of striped hamster (Cricetulus barabensis) testes have indicated that the photoperiodism of testes, especially apoptosis, may be influenced by miRNAs. As a functional miRNA, cba-miR-222-3p in striped hamster testes exhibits suppression under a short photoperiod. To elucidate the potential role of testicular cba-miR-222-3p in the seasonal reproduction of striped hamsters, we exposed male striped hamsters t

Photoperiod, the length of daylight, has a significant impact on the physiological characteristics of seasonal breeding animals, including their somatic and gonadal development. In rodents, expression of deiodinase type II (Dio2) and III (Dio3) in the hypothalamus is crucial for responding to photoperiodic signals. However, research on the photoperiodism of hypothalamic gene expression and the corresponding regulatory mechanism in Brandt's voles living in the Mongolian steppes is limited. In this study, we gradually changed day length patterns to simulate spring (increasing long photoperiod, I
