A 3-and-a-half-year-old male child presented with fused cariously involved right maxillary primary central and lateral incisors as well as a previously traumatized non-vital left primary central incisor with a draining fistula. The child also had other restorative needs and the decision taken was to address all needs under a G.A. With respect to the fused incisors, these were split and root canals treatment was performed for all three incisors which were then restored with stainless steel crowns with esthetic facings.

This review aims at describing and comparing materials commonly used in root canal therapy, the cytotoxicity, histopathological, microbiological and clinical aspects ofa iodoform-based paste (Guedes-Pinto Paste-GPP) used in endodontic treatment of primary teeth. GPP has shown excellent biocompatibility to pulp fibroblasts and mild inflammatory reactions, having been well-tolerated by the periapical and connective tissues. Moreover, GPP bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects against many oral microorganisms were also demonstrated. Regarding clinical trials, the GPP technique has achieved succe

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases, including dental caries, periodontitis, pulpitis, and temporomandibular disorders (TMD), impose a substantial global burden affecting billions of individuals and costing an estimated USD 390 billion annually. Despite their frequent clinical co-occurrence, the extent to which these conditions share a common genetic basis remains unclear.
METHODS: We analyzed genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics from up to 500,000 Finnish participants. Genome-wide and regional genetic correlations were quantified using High-Definition Likelihood. Genomic Structural

PurposeOral focus screening is recommended before HCT (haematopoietic cell transplantation). Acute foci are generally treated pre-HCT. However, it is unclear whether chronic foci should be treated pre-HCT. This study aimed to evaluate the association between number of foci and early post-HCT morbidity and mortality.MethodsPatients who received an oral screening pre-HCT at Radboudumc between 2013 and 2023, with a recent panoramic radiograph, were included. Foci were defined as teeth or implants with deep pockets, furcation radiolucencies, periapical radiolucencies, deep caries, partial eruption

OBJECTIVES: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is an inflammatory chronic disorder that mainly affects exocrine glands. Additionally, oral infections can aggravate the glandular dysfunction. However, data on primary dental care (PDC) treatment in pSS are scarce. This study aimed to appraise the impact of PDC on the Xerostomia Inventory (XI), unstimulated/stimulated salivary flow rates and salivary cytokine profile in pSS.
METHODS: Fifty-two pSS patients and 52 sex- and age-matched control participants without systemic autoimmune diseases were included in a prospective study. At inclusion, all p

Patients with severe mental illness (SMI) often have untreated caries, periodontal inflammation, tooth loss, xerostomia-related risk, dental anxiety, and delayed dental attendance. This narrative review aimed to synthesize evidence relevant to dental treatment planning for patients with SMI receiving psychiatric home-visit care and to clarify when domiciliary dental assessment and repeated professional oral care may be indicated. Targeted literature searches and citation tracking were used to identify reviews, epidemiological studies, intervention studies, qualitative syntheses, and special ca

BACKGROUND Apical periodontitis is caused by infected dental pulp and may be associated with dental caries or trauma, which can destroy periradicular tissues. This study included periapical tissue of patients with chronic apical periodontitis and aimed to evaluate the presence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and to determine the levels of inflammatory cytokines using enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA). MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 79 patients participated in this study. Periapical lesions were taken from the tooth roots indicated f

BACKGROUND: Oral health surveys aid in estimating the oral health of a population and provide a projection for future oral health care needs. We report the procedures and rationale of a survey carried out to assess the oral health status and risk factors for oral disease among adults in the Greater Accra Region (GAR) of Ghana. The objective was to provide prevalence estimates on dental diseases, oral health behaviour and risk factors, and to establish baseline epidemiological data on the population's oral health for further research.
METHODS: This was a population-based cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND: Schimke immuno-osseous dysplasia (SIOD) is a rare, severe, autosomal recessive disorder that results in spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, renal dysfunction, immunodeficiency, facial dysmorphism and growth failure. Little is known about oral features associated with SIOD. Some of the dental anomalies encountered are specific to SIOD and have only been reported in individuals with SIOD.
CASE REPORT: This paper describes the clinical and radiographic dental manifestations of SIOD in two Caucasian brothers. Both lived to be about 10 years old. After a variety of symptoms were reported, a

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic removal of asymptomatic disease-free impacted wisdom teeth is surgical removal of wisdom teeth in the absence of symptoms and with no evidence of local disease. Impacted wisdom teeth may be associated with pathological changes, such as pericoronitis, root resorption, gum and alveolar bone disease (periodontitis), caries and the development of cysts and tumours. When surgical removal is carried out in older people, the risk of postoperative complications, pain and discomfort is increased. Other reasons to justify prophylactic removal of asymptomatic disease-free impacte

BACKGROUND: Vital pulp therapy (VPT) has recently been reported as an effective approach for preventing and treating carious pulp injury in permanent teeth. Compared with root canal treatment (RCT), which involves complete removal of the pulp tissue, VPT effectively maintains pulp vitality and retains the physiological functions of the pulp. In the research pool, large-scale randomized controlled trials evaluating the treatment outcome of VPT using calcium silicate cements and RCT in cariously exposed permanent teeth are lacking. Here, we present a monocentric clinical protocol to compare the

INTRODUCTION: Both pulpotomy and pulpectomy are indicated in deciduous teeth with carious pulp exposure. Pulpotomy is recommended for treating carious pulp exposure in primary molars with the development of dental biomaterials. However, it is difficult to determine the severity of pulpitis as children frequently have difficulty communicating their clinical symptoms and there is no objective diagnostic method to assess pulpal status. Thus, therapeutic interventions for deciduous teeth with carious pulp involvement are controversial in clinical applications. This study compared the clinical and

The aim of this study was to investigate the loss of teeth in positions mesially adjacent to implant-supported fixed dentures (IFDs) after insertion of IFDs in unilateral free-end edentulous spaces in the mandible at dental clinics. There were a total of 157 adjacent teeth. Nine adjacent teeth (5.73%, 9 of 157), 9 opposing teeth (2.59%, 9 of 348), 38 posterior teeth (1.93%, 38 of 1,964), and 3 anterior teeth (0.22%, 3 of 1,380) were lost during the observation period. The percentage of lost adjacent teeth was higher than that of posterior teeth (P = .002). Teeth in positions adjacent to the IF

Vertical root fractures (VRFs) often occur in endodontically treated teeth and in patients older than 40 years of age. However, VRFs in teeth without endodontic treatment are relatively uncommon. VRFs are difficult to diagnose as the symptoms are non-specific or often delayed. The most common radiographic findings are thickening of the periodontal ligament, deep, localized, vertical bone loss, and localized periradicular bone loss. The explicit feature for detecting VRFs is direct visualization of a radiolucent fracture line on radiographs. However, the fracture line can be difficult to direct
