The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster responds behaviorally to sound, gravity, and wind. Exposure to male courtship songs results in reduced locomotion in females, whereas males begin to chase each other. When agitated, fruit flies tend to move against gravity. When faced with air currents, they 'freeze' in place. Based on recent studies, Johnston's hearing organ, the antennal ear of the fruit fly, serves as a sensor for all of these mechanosensory stimuli. Compartmentalization of sense cells in Johnston's organ into vibration-sensitive and deflection-sensitive neural groups allows this single

UNLABELLED: Opioid peptides have been detected in the auditory and vestibular efferent neurons where they colocalize with the major neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. We investigated the function of opioids to modulate neurotransmission mediated by hair cell's alpha9/alpha10-containing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (alpha9/alpha10nAChRs). The endogenous opioid peptides, endomorphin-1 (mu agonist) and dynorphin B (kappa agonist), but not a delta agonist [D-Pen2,D-Pen-5]enkephalin, inhibited the acetylcholine-evoked currents in frog saccular hair cells and rat inner hair cells. This inhibition

Dizziness is not a unique clinical picture, but rather is the unspecific symptom of numerous diseases. Dizziness always develops when the real incoming vestibular, visual and somatosensory information contradict each other and the expected input signals. Disorders of the vestibular apparatus are the most frequent cause of dizziness; in contrast, cervicogenic causes play a secondary role. Dizziness syndromes usually have a favourable prognosis and can be successfully treated.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness (MS) is triggered by vestibular conflict, yet how vestibular habituation training (VHT) engages higher-order cortical circuits remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To test whether VHT modulates medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) activity and structural plasticity in a rotational MS model.
METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were assigned to control (CON), motion sickness (MS), or vestibular habituation training (VHT) groups. MS was induced by a single 4-g session (four 1-min bouts; total 4 min), whereas VHT mice received 14 daily sessions (30 × 1-min bouts/day; total 30 min/day). Beh

INTRODUCTION: Apart from conventional head-impulse tests (i.e., passive HITs), patency of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) can also be evaluated through self-generated HITs (i.e., active HITs). We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of active (self-generated) HITs in patients with acute unilateral vestibulopathy/vestibular neuritis (AUVP/VN) during the acute stages.
METHODS: We prospectively recruited 24 patients with AUVP/VN and 30 healthy participants from January 2019 to June 2026. All subjects underwent passive as well as active HITs. We compared the latency and amplitude of corrective sacc

HYPOTHESIS: Cerebellar Ataxia with Neuropathy and Vestibular Areflexia (CANVAS) is likely to have a genetic basis. We describe the unique eye movement features of a possible phenotypic CANVAS variant.
BACKGROUND: The patient comes from a large CANVAS kindred (four out of nine siblings) and has sensory neuropathy, cerebellar eye signs, and vestibular migraine (VM), but otherwise normal vestibular function.
METHODS: We recorded eye and head movements using the gold standard scleral search coil technique: in the patient, a close relative with mild sensory neuropathy, and a normal control.

Vestibular compensation after unilateral vestibular deafferentation is modulated by certain individual characteristics, such as pre-operative visual neurosensory preference or vestibular pattern. Physical activity (PA) allows the implementation of new sensorimotor and behavioral strategies leading to an improvement of balance control. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the level of PA before surgery on balance compensatory mechanisms in patients after vestibular schwannoma (VS) surgery. Thirty patients with VS, 15 considered as regularly physically active and 15 as sedentary participat

Studies of compensation of injury to the human vestibular system have, in the main, focused on the vestibular-ocular reflex. Probing vestibular perception allows more of the sensory pathway to be assessed. We present a novel paradigm for simultaneously testing vestibular perceptual and nystagmic thresholds to angular acceleration around an earth vertical axis. The perceptual thresholds can be modulated asymmetrically in normal subjects by DC galvanic stimulation with the head flexed in the roll plane, as expected from the main torsional plane of action of the galvanic stimulus. The perceptual

We report a case of a tiny infarct on the left dorsolateral pons in a 50-year-old man who presented with prolonged and isolated vertigo. The clinical features mimic vestibular neuritis and can easily lead to misdiagnosis. Selective involvement of the left superior vestibular nucleus might explain the resemblance to acute peripheral vestibulopathy.

Vestibular neuritis (VN) usually leads to a sudden gain asymmetry of the high-acceleration horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). We asked whether this asymmetry decreases over time indicating peripheral recovery and/or central compensation. The horizontal VOR during rapid rotational head impulses to both sides was recorded with search coils in 37 patients at different time periods (1-240 weeks) after the onset of VN. In ten patients, sequential measurements were performed. Gains of the VOR during head impulses toward the ipsilesional side significantly increased after the initial drop (ave

Vestibular neuritis (VN) rapidly damages unilateral vestibular periphery, inducing severe balance disorders. In most cases, such vestibular imbalance is gradually restored to within the normal level after clinical therapies. This successive clinical recovery occurs due to regeneration of vestibular periphery and/or accomplishment of central vestibular compensation. We experienced 36 patients with VN treated at our hospital, including cases in our previous preliminary report. To elucidate effects of steroid therapy both on the recovery of peripheral function and on the adaptation of central ves

INTRODUCTION: Vertigo is a very common symptom at otorhinolaryngology (ENT), neurological, and emergency units, but often, it is difficult to distinguish between vertigo of peripheral and central origin.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of a hospital database, including all patients admitted to the ENT University Hospital Graz after neurological examination, with a diagnosis of peripheral vestibular vertigo and subsequent diagnosis of central nervous infarction as the actual cause for the vertigo. Twelve patients were included in this study.
RESULTS: All patients w

Cochlear implantation is a highly successful intervention for the treatment of deafness that depends on electrical stimulation of the inner ear's surviving spiral ganglion neurons. It is thought that some of the variability in hearing outcomes that is seen in patients receiving implants may be a reflection of the number or health of surviving neurons. A variety of studies have demonstrated a relationship between hair cell loss and degeneration of the spiral ganglion. This has been attributed to the loss of neurotrophin production with destruction of the spiral ganglion's target, the hair cell.

Saccades, including fast phases of nystagmus, disappear during drowsiness and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, but are present during the alert state and REM sleep. The purpose of this study was to determine whether spontaneous nystagmus is present in patients with vestibular neuritis during REM sleep. Eight patients with spontaneous nystagmus due to vestibular neuritis and eight control patients without any nystagmus underwent at least one night of polysomnography. Fast phases of nystagmus were analyzed. The number of right and left horizontal saccades were counted, first during 3-5 minut

Otoneurological and respiratory tests were performed on 32 patients after whiplash injury caused by a rear-end car collision. Oculomotor and cervico-ocular test results were generally normal. In a significantly large number of case, the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) was hyperactive (n = 17; 53%) and the respiratory test results were typical of the hyperventilation syndrome (HVS) (n = 12; 38%). Hyperactive VOR and the HVS occurred significantly more often in combination (n = 7; 22%) than could be accounted for by combined false positivity. Most of the significant findings were due to high relat

Atp2b2 encodes the plasma membrane Ca(2+)-ATPase type 2 (PMCA2) expressed in various tissues, including stereocilia of cochlear and vestibular hair cells, cerebellar Purkinje cells, and lactating mammary epithelia. Mutations of the gene lead to deafness, ataxia, and reduced Ca(2+) levels in milk. Heterozygous mutants also have abnormal hearing, suggesting that precise regulation of Atp2b2 is required for normal function. In this study, we describe Atp2b2 5'-untranslated region genomic structure and transcript usage in mice. Using 5'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends, we observed four transcript
