Complex blunt traumatic abdominal wall hernias: Experience from a high-volume abdominal core health center.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic abdominal wall hernias are rare and commonly involve the lateral abdominal wall due to shearing off the oblique and transversus abdominis muscles from the iliac crest. The vast majority of the current literature focuses on the index trauma admission, includes few patients, and provides little to no detail about the hernia repair itself. We aim to report our center's high-volume experience with a definitive repair of chronic traumatic lateral abdominal wall hernias. METHODS: All patients who underwent lateral abdominal wall hernia repair performed at our institution from

Core Needle Biopsy of the Abdominal Fat Pad for Diagnosis of Amyloidosis.

Amyloidosis is a rare systemic disorder that is underdiagnosed and whose incidence is increasing as the population ages. The reference standard for diagnosis is endomyocardial biopsy, though its utility as a screening tool is limited. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) and surgical excisional biopsy (SEB) of the abdominal fat pad have emerged as alternatives to endomyocardial biopsy as screening tools for amyloidosis. Given concerns about the variable sensitivity of FNA and the more invasive nature of SEB, our referring providers asked our group to perform core needle biopsies (CNB) of the abdominal

A Core Outcome Set for Intact Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Under Surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Current literature on AAA is characterized by selective outcome reporting, while guideline recommendations are frequently based on studies of poor methodological quality. To improve evidence synthesis, standardization of outcome measures through a core outcome set (COS) is advocated, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) research. A COS consists of essential outcomes for reporting in clinical research based on patient and expert consensus. This study aimed to create a COS for research on patients with AAA under surveillance. This COS will be innovatively applied in AI resear

Editor's Choice - A Core Outcome Set for Intact Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair.

OBJECTIVE: Technology and advances in clinical care have changed the management of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) but the clinical effectiveness of continuing advances needs to be assessed. To facilitate rapid synthesis of new evidence and improve stakeholder representation, including patients, the concept of core outcome sets (COS) has been developed. COS, reflecting the needs of all stakeholders, have been established across several surgical specialties. This study aimed to develop an international core outcome set for intact AAA repair. METHODS: Following COMET methodology, potential ou

Percutaneous core biopsy of abdominal tumors using 22 gauge needles: further observations.

Percutaneous needle sampling of suspected malignant tumors was carried out in 150 patients using a technique providing specimens for both cytologic and histologic analyses. Adequate samples for pathologic analysis were obtained in 97% and 89%, respectively. An overall accuracy rate of 85% was achieved with histologic results providing a positive diagnosis in 7% of patients in whom corresponding cytologic information was falsely negative. Both in vivo and in vitro experiments suggest no superiority in the tissue retrieval rate of the different 22 gauge needles used for biopsy. Since the core bi

The investigation of ultrasound to assess lateral abdominal wall activation with different types of core exercises.

BACKGROUND: Core training is the foundation of physical exercise. The activation of the lateral abdominal wall (LAW) muscles in the core muscles, particularly the transversus abdominal (TrA) muscles, has a stabilizing effect on the chest and abdomen. Therefore, we need to focus on the training effect of the TrA. There are many ways to measure the LAW. Ultrasound can assess the effect of training in real time and intuitively. Therefore, we intend to evaluate the activation of the LAW in different types of core training using ultrasound, to determine the best movements that can activate the TrA

Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy in diagnosis of abdominal and pelvic neoplasm in pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy of abdominal and pelvic masses in adults has gained tremendous popularity. However, the application of the same treatment in children is not as popular because of apprehensions regarding inadequate tissues for the biopsy and accidental puncture of vital organs. METHODS: Data of the application of ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy in 105 pediatric patients with clinically or ultrasound-diagnosed abdominopelvic masses were reviewed. Diagnostic procedures were conducted in our institution from May 2011 to May 2013. RESULTS: The biopsies were c

Abdominal PP meshes coated with functional core-sheath biodegradable nanofibers with anticoagulant and antibacterial properties.

Abdominal hernia repair is a common surgical procedure, involving in most cases the use of textile meshes providing a mechanical barrier to consolidate the damaged surrounding tissues and prevent the resurgence of the hernia. However, in more than half cases postoperative complications such as adhesions and infections occur at the surface of the mesh, leading to chronic pain for the patient and requiring the removal of the implant. One of the most promising strategies to reduce the risk of postoperative adhesions and infections is to add a physical barrier between the mesh and the abdominal wa

Robotic Abdominal Wall Repair with Endoscopic Adductor Lengthening: A Minimally Invasive Approach for Core Muscle Injuries.

Groin pain is a common complaint in sports medicine practices but can be a challenge to accurately diagnose given the expanse of differentials. In the athlete, groin pain may be caused by a core muscle injury, also known as sports hernia or athletic pubalgia. These injuries most frequently occur in young males who participate in explosive and rotationally demanding activities such as soccer, football, and ice hockey, which generate large forces across the trunk and hip joint. These injuries are becoming more frequently diagnosed, in part, due to the utilization of diagnostic modalities, such a

Enhancing core stability and strength through abdominal drawing-in maneuver training using a sphygmomanometer: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: The transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle plays a crucial role in lumbar spine stability and core strength. Activation of the TrA is commonly achieved through the abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM). Dysfunction in the deep abdominal muscles is often linked to low back pain and instability. The ADIM technique involves drawing the navel inward toward the spine while maintaining a neutral spine position and normal breathing, thereby engaging the TrA. Sphygmomanometer is a valuable tool for measuring muscle activation, tracking changes in pressure, and ensuring core stability and streng
