Effect of acid etching on the dental pulp in adhesive composite restorations.

Pulpal response to marginal enamel etching or both enamel and dentine etching with 37% phosphoric acid for adhesive composite restorations was studied in the teeth of the Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata). Dentine etching irritated the pulp and caused moderate to severe initial changes along the odontoblastic layer at 3 days. When no bacteria were present along the cavity walls, the subsequent pulpal reactions at 30 and 90 days decreased with time and large amounts of irritation dentine were formed. These inflammatory reactions were less than those caused by enamel etching only, or zinc oxide/e

Characteristic fatigue strength and reliability of dental glass-ceramics: Effect of distinct surface treatments - Hydrofluoric acid etching and silane treatment vs one-step self-etching ceramic primer.

The aim of this study was to mechanically characterize through flexural fatigue test two CAD-CAM glass-ceramics according to distinct surface etching protocols. To do so, feldspathic (FELD) and lithium disilicate (LD) glass ceramics were subjected to different surface treatments: (1) control - no treatment (Ctrl); (2) conventional protocol etching with 5% hydrofluoric acid followed by silane coupling agent application (HF + SIL; Monobond N, Ivoclar); or (3) using a self-etching ceramic primer (E&P; Monobond Etch & Prime, Ivoclar). Ceramic discs (N = 120; Ø = 12 mm; thickness = 1.2 mm) were pro

Promotion of Dentin Biomimetic Mineralization and Bonding Efficacy by Interfacial Control of an Experimental Citric Acid Dental Etching Agent.

Resin-bonded restorations are the most important caries treatment method in clinical practice. Thus, improving the durability of dentin bonding remains a pressing issue. As a promising solution, guided tissue remineralization can induce the formation of apatite nanocrystals to repair defects in the dentin bonding interface. In this study, we present an experimental 20 wt % citric acid (CA) dental etching agent that removes the smear layer. After CA-etching, approximately 3.55 wt % residual CA formed a strong bond with collagen fibrils, reducing the interfacial energy between the remineralizing

Comparison of Malondialdehyde Levels among Patients with Sandblasted Acid-Etched and Anodized Surface Dental Implants: A Prospective Clinical Study.

Inflammation that occur as a part of body's response to implant-tissue contact can result in oxidative stress. Therefore, exploring the oxidative stress around different surface treated dental implants is essential to improve the performance of implants. The purpose of this study was to detect and measure the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), oxidative stress marker among patients with sandblasted acid-etched and anodized surface dental implants. In this prospective clinical study, 78 patients who had undergone implant placement for missing single posterior tooth in mandible using sandblasted ac

The effect of simple heat treatment on apatite formation on grit-blasted/acid-etched dental Ti implants already in clinical use.

Grit-blasted/acid-etched titanium dental implants have a moderately roughened surface that is suitable for cell adhesion and exhibits faster osseointegration. However, the roughened surface does not always maintain stable fixation over a long period. In this study, a simple heat treatment at 600°C was performed on a commercially available dental Ti implant with grit-blasting/acid-etching, and its effect on mineralization capacity was assessed by examining apatite formation in a simulated body fluid (SBF). The as-purchased implant displayed a moderately roughened surface at the micrometer scale

Comparative Evaluation of Dental Clinical Surface Treatments for Polyetheretherketone with Airborne-Particle Abrasion, Hydrofluoric Acid Etching, and Handheld Nonthermal Plasma Activation on Long-Term Bond Performance.

Polyaryletherketone (PAEK) materials, including polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), possess excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility; however, their inherently low surface energy limits effective bonding with resin cements. This study investigated the effects of hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching and handheld nonthermal plasma (HNP) treatment on enhancing the adhesive performance of PAEK surfaces. Disk-shaped PEEK (BP) and PEKK (PK) specimens were divided into four groups: APA (airborne-particle abrasion), PLA (nonthermal plasma treatment), LHF (5.0% HF), and

Primate pulpal response to ultraviolet light-polymerized direct-bonding material systems.

The results of this study, plus those of a previous study, show that a layer of CaOH lining the floor of the tooth cavity will protect the dental pulp against toxic irritants inherent to an UV light-polymerized cavity liner and a UV light-polymerized composite restorative resin. This study also showed that a layer of CaOH lining the floor of the cavity will protect the dental pulp against acid irritants inherent in the enamel etching solution. It is recommended to restorative dentistry that all primary dentin within clinically accessible areas of the cavity preparation be covered with a layer

A concise review of dental sealants in caries management.

This concise review provides an update of the use of dental sealants. Dental sealants protect a tooth from caries development by providing a physical barrier to microorganism colonisation and creating a favorable environment for patients to clean. Some sealants release fluoride ions to promote remineralization. Dental sealants can be applied on pits and fissures of primary and permanent teeth to prevent and arrest early enamel caries. They are effective in caries prevention. The preventive fraction of resin sealant is up to 61% after 5 years. Dental sealants can be classified as resin, glass i

Bone contact around acid-etched implants: a histological and histomorphometrical evaluation of two human-retrieved implants.

The surface characteristics of dental implants play an important role in their clinical success. One of the most important surface characteristics of implants is their surface topography or roughness. Many techniques for preparing dental implant surfaces are in clinical use: turning, plasma spraying, coating, abrasive blasting, acid etching, and electropolishing. The Osseotite surface is prepared by a process of thermal dual etching with hydrochloric and sulfuric acid, which results in a clean, highly detailed surface texture devoid of entrapped foreign material and impurities. This seems to e

A new technique for the postmortem detection of tooth-coloured dental restorations.

Identification of unknown bodies is mainly made by dental examination and comparison with accurate dental records. Therefore it is necessary to examine the jaws carefully and to locate every tooth-coloured dental restoration. Overlooking dental fillings can make positive identification impossible. The technique described prepares the natural dental hard tissue by etching with 37% phosphoric acid. In the next step an indicator colours the roughened dental tissue but not the polished restoration material. In this way all 15 tested dental restoration materials could be detected with high sensitiv

Sandblasted-acid-etched titanium surface influences in vitro the biological behavior of SaOS-2 human osteoblast-like cells.

Osseointegrated dental implants have been successfully used over the past several years, allowing functional replacement of missing teeth. Surface properties of titanium dental implants influence bone cell response. Implant topography appears to modulate cell growth and differentiation of osteoblasts thus affecting the bone healing process. Optimal roughness and superficial morphology are still controversial and need to be clearly defined. In the present study we evaluated in vitro the biological behavior of SaOS-2 cells, a human osteoblast-like cell line, cultured on two different titanium su
