Skeletal evidence for child abuse: a physical anthropological perspective.

Analysis of the skeletal remains of abused children can prove challenging for forensic pathologists and radiographers who are inexperienced in the direct examination of bones. In such cases, radiographically invisible skeletal lesions that document a history of trauma can often be identified by a physical anthropologist with appropriate osteological experience. This is illustrated by cases in which skeletal remains of four murdered children and a mentally handicapped adult produced evidence of antemortem trauma and perimortem injuries that was critical in developing murder cases against the as

[Role and research progress of dental medicine in physical anthropology studies].

Physical anthropology is a discipline that studies human physical characteristics and their evolutionary patterns through the analysis of human biological remains. Oral tissues such as teeth and jawbones, serving as crucial or even exclusive materials among human biological remains, establish oral medicine's central role in this field. This paper reviewed the advances in oral medicine's research on key physical anthropology topics and methodologies, including human origins and evolution, paleopathology, paleodietary reconstruction, and paleomicrobiology. In human origins and evolution research

[Pitfalls of anthropological typology].

The essence of anthropological typology is to classify people as belonging to anthropological types according to predetermined sets of morphological traits. The authors of the concept claim that traits characteristic of a given type are monogenic and have a Mendelian inheritance pattern. According to these assumptions, it is possible to unambiguously determine hair or eye color, etc. on the basis of scull characteristics only. Such a solution could be of a great importance in identification based on the skeleton but for the fact that the concept contradicts the current body of knowledge of pop

Dimensional accuracy of structured light scans and 3D prints of various human skeletal elements.

Three-dimensional (3D) structured light scanning is a beneficial documentation technique in forensic anthropology because such models facilitate continued analysis and data sharing; they can also be 3D printed for demonstrative purposes in legal proceedings and training, without risk of damage to the original skeletal material. As its application in forensic anthropology is relatively novel, the aim of the present study is to statistically evaluate the dimensional accuracy of 3D structured light scans and 3D prints for ten bone types, including the cranium, mandible, 2nd cervical vertebra (C2)

Estimating the length of incomplete long bones: forensic standards from Guatemala.

We report on new standards for estimating long bone length from incomplete bones for use in forensic and archaeological contexts in Central America. The measurements we use closely follow those defined by Steele ([1970] Personal Identification in Mass Disasters; Washington, DC: Smithsonian Institution), but we add several new landmarks. We measured the femur, humerus, tibia, and fibula of 100 Maya skeletons (68 males, 32 females) recovered from forensic exhumations. We derived the equations by regressing bone segment length on bone length, and solved for bone length to maximize the utility of

New World cranial deformation practices: historical implications for pathophysiology of cognitive impairment in deformational plagiocephaly.

INTRODUCTION: Throughout history, prehistoric and even some contemporary civilizations have practiced various forms of intentional and unintentional cranial deformation. Plagiocephaly can be the result of craniosynostosis, infant positioning, or other unintentional or intentional deformation. MATERIALS: We reviewed the medical and anthropological literature and the anthropological collections of Arizona State University and the San Diego Museum of Man for evidence of cranial deformation and its possible physiological and cognitive side effects. Evidence of cranial shaping was also sought amon

Aesthetic surgery of the supraorbital ridge and forehead structures.

A physical anthropologic basis for aesthetic evaluation of the supraorbital ridges and forehead is described. The structures included for evaluation and possible treatment are the supraorbital ridges, relation of the orbital walls to the eyes, the temporal ridges, and slope of the forehead. All can be altered by reduction contouring or augmentation using methods described. Twenty-one patients are presented having procedures for purely aesthetic reasons. If more than 5 to 6 mm of augmentation or reduction is desired, the deformity is more than aesthetic and should be treated by a craniofacial t

The endocast of the one-million-year-old human cranium from Buia (UA 31), Danakil Eritrea.

OBJECTIVES: The Homo erectus-like cranium from Buia (UA 31) was found in the Eritrean Danakil depression and dated to 1 million years. Its outer morphology displays archaic traits, as well as distinctive and derived characters. The present study provides the description and metric comparison of its endocranial anatomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: UA 31 was originally filled by a diffuse concretion. Following its removal and cleaning, the endocast (995 cc) was reconstructed after physical molding and digital scan. Its morphology is here compared with specimens belonging to different human taxa, tak

Enthesopathies as occupational stress markers: evidence from the upper limb.

Enthesopathies--that is, "musculo-skeletal stress markers"--are frequently used to reconstruct past lifestyles and activity patterns. Relatively little attention has been paid in physical anthropology to methodological gaps implicit in this approach: almost all methods previously employed neglect current medical insights into enthesopathies and the distinction between healthy and pathological aspects has been arbitrary. This study presents a new visual method of studying fibrocartilaginous enthesopathies of the upper limb (modified from Villotte: Bull Mém Soc Anthropol Paris n.s. 18 (2006) 65-

Primate Behavior and the Importance of Comparative Studies in Biological Anthropology.

Biological anthropology seeks to understand humans from an evolutionary perspective. Namely, what makes humans different from other animals, and how did we get this way? Many relevant traits are physical, but many others are behavioral. For example, when and why did our species develop complex cognition, enduring bonds, and intense cooperation? Given the importance of behavior, biological anthropologists have a long history of turning to our primate relatives to generate hypotheses about the evolutionary processes shaping humans. Indeed, primate behavior is foundational to our field. But not a

On Gerasimov's plastic facial reconstruction technique: new insights to facilitate repeatability.

Gerasimov's plastic facial reconstruction method is notoriously difficult to repeat from the published literature. Primarily, this is because of the method's underlying qualitative basis but other factors contribute including: misreports in the secondary literature of Gerasimov's method essence; a lack of published details concerning Gerasimov's modeling mastic; Gerasimov's deviation from his own published nose projection prediction guidelines; and continued refinement of the methods in the 15 years following their foremost publication. As Gerasimov cannot be consulted to resolve these issues,

CRANIAL MORPHOMETRY: COMPARING TRADITIONAL METHODS AND 3D SCANNERS.

INTRODUCTION: This narrative review analyzes differences between present 3D scanning technologies and traditional anthropometric methods in cranial morphometry. Reviewing the literature, we highlight the advantages, disadvantages, and uses of both techniques in anthropology, medical plastic surgery, orthodontics, and forensic science. We compared the efficacy of anthropometric measurement techniques, including 3D scanning and traditional methods. Craniofacial anthropometry involves measuring the head and face in living individuals, cadaveric specimens, and radiological images. Traditional cali

Alterations of skull bones found in anencephalic skeletons from an identified osteological collection. Two case reports.

One of the most common conditions during fetal development is anencephaly, which often involves many identification difficulties in the context of physical anthropology, as it causes severe skull challenges. In this paper, we describe the alterations found in the skulls of two perinatal individuals with anencephaly from the osteological collection of identified infants in the Anthropology Laboratory of the University of Granada, Spain. Both subjects of study are in perfect state of preservation. Despite the severe malformations, all skull bones have been targeted and identified, as the possibi

Human facial expressions as adaptations: Evolutionary questions in facial expression research.

The importance of the face in social interaction and social intelligence is widely recognized in anthropology. Yet the adaptive functions of human facial expression remain largely unknown. An evolutionary model of human facial expression as behavioral adaptation can be constructed, given the current knowledge of the phenotypic variation, ecological contexts, and fitness consequences of facial behavior. Studies of facial expression are available, but results are not typically framed in an evolutionary perspective. This review identifies the relevant physical phenomena of facial expression and i

Description of sex difference as prescription for sex change: on the origins of facial feminization surgery.

This article explores the research project that led to the development of facial feminization surgery, a set of bone and soft tissue reconstructive surgical procedures intended to feminize the faces of male-to-female trans- women. Conducted by a pioneering surgeon in the mid-1980s, this research consisted of three steps: (1) assessments of sexual differences of the skull taken from early 20th-century physical anthropology, (2) the application of statistical analyses taken from late 20th-century orthodontic research, and (3) the vetting of this new morphological and metric knowledge in a dry sk

Multiple Abnormalities in the Skull of a Prostitute. An Autopsy Report (1900).

OBJECTIVE: The study presents and comments on the publication of an autopsy report. CASE REPORT: In 1900 De Blasio published an article entitled "Multiple abnormalities in a prostitute's skull" in the "Journal of Psychiatry, Criminal Anthropology and related sciences". In this work De Blasio related anomalies at the cranial level to the presence of mental pathologies. The skull belonged to a 24-year-old prostitute who died of syphilitic hepatitis. In his article, De Blasio described the life of the woman, after which he gave a macroscopic description of the skull. De Blasio believed that the

Obstetric Constraints in Six Monkey Genera.

OBJECTIVES: Our previous work has shown that the pelvic inlet is not a point of obstetric constraint in nonhuman apes. In this study, we have extended that work to include monkey genera where research indicated the presence of significant cephalopelvic constraint, even at the pelvic inlet. We identified the true minimum dimensions of the birth canal in these monkeys and compared them to fetal head dimensions in order to determine the actual obstetric constraints in these species. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pelves of six monkey genera (Ateles, Callithrix, Cebus, Lagothrix, Papio, and Saimiri) were

Distal phalanges of Eosimias and Hoanghonius.

Seven primate distal phalanges have been identified from two middle Eocene fossil localities (Locality 1 and Nanbaotou) in the Yuanqu Basin, China, providing the first evidence of distal phalangeal morphology in Asian Eocene adapiform and eosimiid primates. The bones are best allocated to the basal anthropoid Eosimias centennicus and to hoanghoniine adapiforms. All distal phalangeal specimens display a morphology consistent with nail-bearing fingers and toes. The hallucal distal phalanx of the basal anthropoid Eosimias is more similar to that of primitive tarsiiforms than to crown group anthro
