A systematic survey of Aralia spinosa (Araliaceae), covering an entire growing season and including aboveground organs at various developmental stages, revealed that only about half of all samples collected showed cyanogenesis. Cyanogenesis was detected in inflorescences and leaves but is apparently restricted to certain harvest times or developmental stages. The structurally unusual triglochinin, characterized by a hex-2-enedioic acid partial structure, was the only cyanogenic glycoside detected. This is the first description of triglochinin in this species and in the family of Araliaceae. Tr

UV-B and IR-A radiation are important inducers of biological changes in skin involving ROS generation. The overloading of antioxidant defense mechanisms by ROS production could lead to photoaging and photocarcinogenesis processes. Various traditional usages are reported for Aralia nudicaulis L. extracts, including treatment of dermatological disorders. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties have already been reported for other Aralia species possibly due to the presence of phenolic compounds. However, the phenolic composition and the potential activity of A. nudicaulis rhizomes extract a

Aralia elata (Miq.) Seem. a nutrient-rich wild vegetable widely consumed in Northeast Asia, is abundant in triterpenoid saponins. Methanol and water are commonly used for phytochemical extraction and food processing, respectively. Although solvent-dependent alterations in saponin composition have been reported in Panax leaves, whether similar effects occur in A. elata leaves (AEL), another member of the Araliaceae family, remain unclear. In this study, a UPLC-Q-TOF MS method was established to comprehensively profile saponins in methanolic and aqueous extracts of AEL. A total of 78 saponins we

It was previously shown that total saponins extracted from Aralia taibaiensis (sAT) have potent antioxidant activities for treating diabetes mellitus and attenuate d-galactose-induced aging. Since diabetes mellitus and aging are closely associated with cardiac dysfunction, particularly ischemic heart disease, sAT may have potential protective activity against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MI/RI). However, the anti-MI/RI effects of sAT have yet to be examined, and the possible molecular mechanisms remain to be determined. The present study was undertaken to investigate the anti-MI/RI

Aralia continentalis exhibits various biological activities; however, their sleep-promoting effects have not been previously reported. In this study, we evaluated the hypnotic effects and sleep-wake profiles of A. continentalis root (KS-126) using a pentobarbital-induced sleep-acceleration test and polysomnographic recordings. Additionally, we investigated the molecular mechanism of KS-126 through patch-clamp electrophysiology. Our polysomnographic recordings revealed that KS-126 not only accelerated the onset of non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) but also extends its duration. Considering t

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common liver disease that is strongly associated with obesity and dysregulation of insulin in the liver. However, currently no pharmacological agents have been established for the treatment of NAFLD. In this regard, we sought to evaluate the anti-NAFLD effects of Aralia elata (Miq) Seem (AE) extract and its ability to inhibit hepatic lipid accumulation and modulate cellular signaling in a high fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mouse model.
METHODS: A model of hepatic steatosis in the HepG2 cells was induced by oleic acid. Intracellular lip

Mercury(II) is a highly toxic environmental pollutant leading to oxidative stress in animals and human beings. In this study we aimed to investigate the possible protective effect of a water-soluble polysaccharide (AEP-w1) from the root bark of Aralia elata against experimental mercury(II)-induced cardiovascular oxidative injury in rat model. The results showed that delayed AEP-w1 supplement to HgCl2-treated mice not only decreased serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels, but also increased serum nitric oxide (NO) metabolite levels and antioxidant capacity.

Aralia elata, a renowned medicinal plant with a rich history in traditional medicine, has gained attention for its potential therapeutic applications. However, the leaves of this plant have been largely overlooked and discarded due to limited knowledge of their biological activity and chemical composition. To bridge this gap, a comprehensive study was conducted to explore the therapeutic potential of the 70% ethanol extract derived from Aralia elata leaves (LAE) for the treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Initially, the cytotoxic effects of LAE on human umbilical vein endothelial cells
